Effect of doped fiber length on the stretch pulses of a mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser
Laser Physics, 2012
A passively self-starting mode-locked fiber ring laser is demonstrated using a highly concentrated Erbium doped fiber (EDF) with a saturable absorber. The effect of EDF length on the performance of the laser is investigated. Stable stretched pulses are obtained at wavelength region of 1560nm with a repetition rate ranging from 10.1 to 12.1 MHz and a pulse width stretching from 0.52 to 0.75 ps as the EDF length is reduced from 4.5 to 1.5 m. The repetition rate goes higher as the cavity length decreases when a shorter EDF is used but the pulse width reduces as the EDF length increases since the total group velocity dispersion (GVD) in the cavity is close to zero. © Pleiades Publishing, Ltd., 2012. http://link.springer.com/article/10.1134/S1054660X12070134

We propose an operation switchable ring-cavity erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) via intra-cavity polarization control. By using a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror in the EDFL cavity, stable Q-switching, Q-switched mode-locking, continuous-wave mode-locking, pulse splitting, and harmonic mode-locking pulses can be manipulated simply by detuning a polarization controller while keeping the pump power at the same level. All EDFL operation states can be obtained under the polarization angles detuning within 180°. Continuous-wave mode-locking of EDFL with 800-fs pulsewidth repeated at 4 MHz has been obtained, for which the output pulse energy is 0.5 nJ and the peak power is 625 W. Interaction between solitons and the accompanied non-soliton component will lead to either pulse splitting or 5 th -order harmonic mode-locking at repetition rate of 20 MHz.

We report on the stable picosecond and femtosecond pulse generation from the bidirectional erbium-doped all-fiber ring laser hybridly mode-locked with a coaction of a single-walled carbon nanotube-based saturable absorber and nonlinear polarization evolution that was introduced through the insertion of the short-segment polarizing fiber. Depending on the total intracavity dispersion value, the laser emits conservative solitons, transform-limited Gaussian pulses, or highly chirped stretched pulses with almost 20 nm wide parabolic spectrum in both clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) directions of the ring. Owing to the polarizing action in the cavity, we have demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, an efficient tuning of soliton pulse characteristics for both CW and CCW channels via an appropriate polarization control. We believe that the bidirectional laser presented may be highly promising for gyroscopic and other dual-channel applications.
Self-stabilized passive, harmonically mode-locked stretched-pulse erbium fiber ring laser
Optics Letters, 2002
We have studied a passive, harmonically mode-locked stretched-pulse erbium fiber ring laser with net positive dispersion that is self-stabilized by gain depletion and electrostriction. Periodic pulses with supermode suppression of .75 dB and picosecond jitter are achieved. The pulses are compressible to 125 fs by external chirp compensation. The repetition rate is 220 MHz, and the average power is as high as 80 mW.

Isolator-free switchable uni- and bidirectional hybrid mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser
Optics Express, 2016
An Erbium-doped fibre ring laser hybrid mode-locked with single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) and nonlinear polarisation evolution (NPE) without an optical isolator has been investigated for various cavity conditions. Precise control of the state of polarisation (SOP) in the cavity ensures different losses for counter-propagating optical fields. As the result, the laser operates in quasi-unidirectional regime in both clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) directions with the emission strengths difference of the directions of 22 dB. Furthermore, by adjusting the net birefringence in the cavity, the laser can operate in a bidirectional generation. In this case, laser pumped with 75 mW power at 980 nm generates almost identical 790 and 570 fs soliton pulses with an average power of 1.17 and 1.11 mW. The operation stability and pulse quality of the soliton pulses in both unidirectional regimes are highly competitive with those generated in conventional ring fibre lasers with isolator in the cavity. Demonstrated bidirectional laser operation can find vital applications in gyroscopes or precision rotation sensing technologies.
Passively mode-locked laser using an entirely centred erbium-doped fiber
Laser Physics, 2015
This paper describes the setup and experimental results for an entirely centred erbium-doped fiber laser with passively mode-locked output. The gain medium of the ring laser cavity configuration comprises a 3 m length of two-core optical fiber, wherein an undoped outer core region of 9.38 μm diameter surrounds a 4.00 μm diameter central core region doped with erbium ions at 400 ppm concentration. The generated stable soliton mode-locking output has a central wavelength of 1533 nm and pulses that yield an average output power of 0.33 mW with a pulse energy of 31.8 pJ. The pulse duration is 0.7 ps and the measured output repetition rate of 10.37 MHz corresponds to a 96.4 ns pulse spacing in the pulse train.

An all-fiber S-band mode-locked Er-doped fiber ring laser operated at 1503 nm is experimentally demonstrated by utilizing the polarization additive-pulse mode-locking (P-APM) mechanism. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first P-APM mode-locked fiber laser operating in the S-band. The gain medium is an S-band Er-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) composed of two Er-doped fiber stages with the technique of depressed-cladding to cut off the fundamental mode. Stable single-pulse operation is achieved within the available pump power range. Besides, characterization of the S-band EDFA module, such as the wavelength dependences of the gain and noise figure, the slope efficiency, as well as the dependence of the pump power on the gain for different input powers is performed. In addition, analysis of the proposed S-band mode-locked fiber laser, such as the pump power dependence of the pulse-width and optical bandwidth, and pulse-width compression is also provided.
Performance characterization of a harmonically mode-locked erbium fiber ring laser
IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 1995
We describe the performance of a harmonically mode-locked, erbium fiber ring laser. Transform-limited pulses with durations of 20-50 ps at 5.044 GHz repetition rate are obtained. The modulation frequency can be detuned by up to *70 kHz and the lasing wavelength can be varied over the entire erbium gain bandwidth. Pulsewidths and pulse bandwidths are measured as a function of modulation power and frequency detuning. The laser is actively stabilized by locking intra-cavity Fabry-Perot etalon passbands to the laser modes.

We investigate theoretically a fiber laser passively mode-locked with nonlinear polarization rotation. A unidirectional ring cavity is considered with a polarizer placed between two sets of a halfwave plate and a quarterwave plate. A master equation is derived and the stability of the continuous and mode-locked solutions is studied. In particular, the effect of the orientation of the four phase plates and of the polarizer on the mode-locking regime is investigated.
