The Renovation of Italian Railway Stations: From the Journey to the Consumption of the Journey

Academic Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies

The article analyses the transformations that have affected Italian railway stations in recent decades. The first part deals with the history of the railway station and is devoted to understanding its functions as well as its social and symbolic meanings. The construction of railways had a significant impact on the urban form: it created new centralities and fractures and conditioned the development of the city. The railway station represented a novelty from an architectural point of view, being a space in which architectural and engineering knowledge merged. Because of their importance and monumentality, railway stations have been likened to cathedrals of modernity and movement and have been among the most important public spaces in the twentieth century. The second part of the article focuses on railway station renovation projects, in particular the «Grandi Stazioni» project, viewing it in the broader context of the profound changes in urban policies, which are increasingly orient...

Infrastructural Systems toward the Valorisation of the History of Architecture: The Case of the Metro-Art in Naples

Advanced Engineering Forum, 2014

Since the Industrial Revolution, cities have changed their identity and the transport systems have produced a strong impact, rather than on their social-anthropological character, on the morphology of the urban pattern and on the development of the vertical dimension of the architectural volumes. This mutation leads, among other things, to a significant transformations in the transition between the 19th and 20th centuries, according to the transition between the historicist eclecticism of previous centuries and the new deal of the belle époque. Paradigmatic and representative of the century are the underground stations built in Vienna and Paris. The case, related to the contemporary, is Naples where the metro-art stations, unlike what happened before, have the dual characteristic of being different from one another- so to provide an extensive collection of contemporary architecture being part of a culture that includes the evolution of taste and the same behaviour of doing and enjoyin...

Challenges in the Reuse and Upgrade of Pier Luigi Nervi’s Structures

The paper presents the overall objectives of a funded research program for the development of a Conservation Plan (CP) for the two halls by Pier Luigi Nervi of the Turin Exhibition Center. The Turin Exhibition Center was conceived immediately after the Second World War to host primarily the annual Automobile Show, in connection with the presence in Turin of the FIAT motor company. The two main pavilions of the Center (Halls B and C) are outstanding examples of a pioneering use, of new advanced methods in reinforced concrete construction, combining innovative prefabrication procedures and the re-invention by Nervi of ferrocement, used to form extremely thin elements. The CP is expected to push and contribute to the preservation of the halls designed and built by Nervi, with special emphasis on structural and seismic vulnerability aspects, also due to concerns raised on the durability of concrete materials and technologies. Re-using these buildings entails the challenge to guarantee n...

Facilities, Landscape, City. To the origins of a missed meeting. Travelling around the new high-speed Naples-Afragola train station

2014

This article gives an account of a series of researches and town plans drawn up in the early 21st century about the areas nearby the settlement of the future high-speed train station in Afragola. Ten years later, during the construction of the facilities of the station, designed by the architect Zaha Hadid, it is probably about time to wonder why the hige cost that the construction of the railway required was not redistributed to the community in terms of utilities and improvement in the landscape. And why did no one, neither the public operators not the politic makers, act "rationally", by following up on the technical solutions concerning the problems caused by politics itself? The depressing landscape absolutely recalls the wide gap between design and town planning practices.

Structural Analysis and Reinforcement of XVI Century Building in the Center of Naples, Italy

DergiPark (Istanbul University), 2021

Most of the buildings in the historical center of the cities in Italy are quite old, and sometimes their age is more than several centuries. This means that a double activity aim should be considered by the community, the historical conservation of the cultural heritage and the static health of the structure to guarantee the safety for the people living or working in those special buildings. This double need for the "living" cultural heritage architectures sometimes arises some internal conflicts, since higher, exaggerated reinforcing interventions could lead to damage, or even cancel, some architectural evidence. The paper introduces as a case study the example of one residential historical building in Naples, Italy, reinforced considering the need to preserve the original aspect. Extensive performed diagnostic tests and specific structural numerical analysis carried out for the emblematic parts of the building are presented.

Tactical Piacenza: Space Making Process in the Train Station Area History of Architecture in the Contemporary Age

The city of Piacenza hosts a significant portion of newcomers compared to the number of residents. However, the lack of communication between the two is also straightforward in the urban context. In this regard, an abandoned place near to the train station of Piacenza has been chosen in order apply a tactical urbanism project whose primary aim is an improved social cohesion in Pia-cenza. High financial costs and yet unsatisfactory end products slow down many design projects and even cause the denial of them. However, employing tactical urbanism perspective, the project aims to foresee the success likelihood of a complete urban design project without requiring a significant budget. Preliminarily proposed idea is to provide a gathering space for the residents of Piacenza in a vacant space. By doing so, the project area has been analyzed and the project that responsive to the problems of the area is introduced in order to give a reference for further applications on a larger scale.
