Observed interannual variability of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation at 26.5°N (original) (raw)
The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (MOC) plays a crucial role in regulating the climate of northwestern Europe by facilitating significant ocean heat transport. Measurements from the RAPID-WATCH/MOCHA/WBTS array at 26.5°N reveal a notable decline in MOC strength from a mean of 18.5 Sv (2004-2009) to 12.8 Sv for the period 2009-2010. This change is largely attributed to altered gyre dynamics rather than solely to Ekman transport fluctuations, indicating a significant reorganization of the ocean circulation that may have implications for regional climate and future oceanographic conditions.
