Mortality rates by suicide in Brazil have been increasing in the last ten years, and the elderly population constitutes a vulnerable population to this grievance. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the epidemiological profile of suicide in the elderly in Brazil, occurring in the period from 2010 to 2019. This is a descriptive ecological study using data from the Mortality Information System of DATASUS regarding mortality from intentionally self-harm in the elderly population, which were analyzed using simple descriptive statistics and presented as raw values and percentages. The data show that 16.7% of the suicides in the period occurred in the elderly population, and 80.4% were men, 48.9% married, 63.1% white, and 54.4% had only up to 7 years of schooling. The main place of occurrence was the home (67.9%). The most prevalent types of injuries were hanging/strangulation/suffocation (65.7%), gunshot (10.5%), and intentional autointoxication (10.1%). It is necessary to adopt preventive measures for this population, according to the risk factors involved, especially in countries where the demographic transition is towards population aging.
Suicide attempts: A contingency analysis Tentativas de suicídio: uma análise de contingências
2013
The aim of this study was to understand, from the perspective of behavioral analysis, the possible antecedents and consequences of a suicide attempt for the individual responsible, using reports from patients that were hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital located in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil, due to their suicide attempts. Three patients that attempted suicide in 2010 took part in this study. Semi-structured interviews were performed, which included questions about the attempt, its antecedents and consequences, and the life history of the patient. Functional analysis showed the presence of risk factors for suicide, as well as reinforcing consequences for the individuals, such as social care only being available after the attempts. Uniterms: Functional analysis; Risk factors for suicide; Suicide attempt.

This article is the product of research undertaken in the city of Porto Alegre, in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The goal is to bring to light and discuss a little known phenomenon - attempted suicide by the elderly. Under-reporting of suicide attempts among this population makes it difficult to place this serious public health problem on the political agenda. As part of this study, we interviewed not only elderly persons who had attempted suicide, but also their family members and mental health and emergency and urgent service professionals. These interviews took place during the course of 2014. From a textual discourse analysis of the various reports, there emerged a category we will call Convergence and Non-Convergence, which deals with the relationship between the elderly population's need for care and the healthcare model in use. This study uses three short stories of individuals to question the biomedical model of serving risk situations, stressing the concept ...
Suicide risk in the elderly: Data from Brazilian public health care program
Journal of Affective Disorders, 2014
a b s t r a c t Objective: Examine prevalence and level of suicide risk, and its associations with sociodemographic factors and mood disorders. Methods: A cross-sectional study with a random sample of 530 individuals aged 60 years or more from Family Health Strategy of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Diagnosis was made by psychiatrists using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview plus (MINIplus). Results: Suicide risk was found in 15.7% of the sample. Female gender, elderly with no income or with no paid activity and those who have lost one or more of his sons presented association with suicide risk. Bipolar disorder shows association with suicide risk for those with or without current episode. For unipolar depression only elderly with a current episode shows association with suicide risk. Limitations: The cross-sectional design limits the examination of causative relationships. The MINIplus questions are not broad enough to assess other important self-destructive behaviors. Conclusions: A high rate of suicide risk was found. As expected an increased rate of mood disorders were related to the risk of suicide. The loss of sons may partly explain a subtype of late-life risk of suicide or mood disorders especially in the oldest-old. These findings can be a useful to generate other research hypothesis and for health professionals who care older persons. Detecting characteristics linked to suicide, therefore opening up the possibility of preventing tragic outcomes providing a proper treatment.

Suicide rates among the older population are observed to be the highest worldwide. This systematic review presents the risk factors and prevention measures concerning suicide in the older adult population. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using the following databases: PubMed Central, Embase, Cochrane Library and CINAHL plus This systematic review used the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines for systematic reviews to identify and analyse research selected from the searches. The older adult population holds its own set of risk factors that are unique to them. The common themes presented were a history of mental health, chronic illnesses and marital issues, all of them strong risk factors for suicide in this population group. It identified the importance of the research focusing on personality and how this can affect people in different ways and at different stages in older adulthood, including the rationale behind suicide. Alongside personality, it also considered feelings of being a burden and the impact of feelings behind belongingness when assessing for suicidal risk. This systematic review found a unique set of relevant risk factors for this population group. This demonstrates the importance of appropriate support for effective prevention measures, such as telephone helplines or therapy.
Suicide attempts in Brazil, 1998–2014: an ecological study
2016
BackgroundAttempted suicide is the main predictor of suicide constituting a major public health issue worldwide. It is estimated that for every completed suicide, 10 to 20 suicide attempts occur. Important part of the occurrences of suicide attempts in Brazil are registered in the hospital information system for coverage of more than 70 % allows to evaluate the extent of this problem in the country. The scope of this article is to analyse hospitalizations resulting from suicide attempts at public hospitals or services contracted out by the public health system (SUS) in Brazil from 1998 to 2014.MethodsThis is an ecological study of secondary morbidity data obtained from the Hospital Information System. The overall rate of suicide attempts per 100 000 (105) individuals and rates stratified by age group and sex were calculated. To measure trends, simple linear regression coefficients were calculated. The hospital mortality rate was calculated per 100 individuals.ResultsThe overall rate...
