Avant-garde Heritage: Three concepts of ritualism for the performing arts (original) (raw)
What exactly do we mean when, in the contemporary performing arts, the word ritual is pronounced? I argue that, although one main concept of theatrical ritualism is currently activated, the history of twentieth-century theatre offers at least two alternative notions that were less succesful at establishing themselves. The dominant notion may be termed 'hot' ritual, and is chie y inspired by the writings of Antonin Artaud. The rst alternative notion will be termed 'minimalist' ritual (strongly related to the Fluxus movement and happening art), the second 'liturgical.' Conspicuously, the theatrical-liturgical efforts of the interbellum period transmitted no legacy to post-war European theatre.

The Influence of Ritual in Performance Art: A Retrospective and Correlational Analysis
This dissertation investigates the element of Ritual, apparent in a wide variety of performance pieces, dating back to the earliest forms of performance art, and essentially its relationship to the performative process. Significant sociopolitical, cultural and scholarly developments, since the 19th century, are outlined, with emphasis on their influence on perceptions towards the ceremonial/behavioural aspect of religion and the revived interest in ritual and anthropology, leading up to contemporary scholarship and work. Ritual and performance is, hence, explored, in relation to social change, emergent from contexts of societal crisis, as well as personal growth and the pursuit of spirituality. Significant elements such as time and space, as well as the use of the body, is further considered, both in terms of ritual and artistic process, revealing correlations between art and religion. Finally, this dissertation looks at ritual and performance as transformative processes and enquires into where the line is drawn between the two and the extents to which there is in fact a distinction.
Rituals without Transcendence – Performative Practice in Contemporary Theatre
Theatre in the age of electronic media highlights its performative character of real presence. Using performance-art techniques, actions and the human body as such are emphasised. Theatre is taking over more and more functions of ritual and is enabling close communication between actors and spectators in order to experience emotional intensity. Ingrid Hentschel discusses "Balkan Baroque", a performance from Marina Abramovicz that deals with pain, mourning and violence in the face of war. Ingrid Hentschel points out the close relationship between contemporary stage direction concepts -such as "Orestie" directed by Michael Thalheimer -and ritual structures of experience.

In theatre, actors often perform religious rituals on stage. In this article, we argue that in some cases, like in Plautus and Simone Weil, religious rituals are not just imitated but the specific performative structure of the ritual enhances the affective charge of the theatre play. To illustrate this technique we apply Gérard Genette’s theory of hypertextuality to develop a new concept of hyper-performativity. Consequently, we analyze Plautus’ Rudens and Simone Weil’s Venise sauvée to portray their hyper-performative techniques, in antiquity as well as in late modernity, how to write religious rituals into theatre. || En el teatro, los actores a menudo realizan rituales religiosos en el escenario. En este estudio defendemos que en algunos casos, como en Plauto y en Simone Weil, los rituales religiosos no son sólo imitados, sino que la estructura performativa específica del ritual realza la carga afectiva de la obra teatral. Para ilustrar esta técnica, aplicamos la teoría de la hipertextualidad de Gérard Genette en el desarrollo de un nuevo concepto de hiper-performatividad. Por consiguiente, analizamos el Rudens de Plauto y la Venise sauvée de Simone Weil con el fin de mostrar sus técnicas hiper-performativas para escribir rituales religiosos en el teatro, tanto en la Antigüedad como en la Modernidad tardía.
