STATE OF BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING (BIM) ADOPTION IN NIGERIA
Construction Industry has had its biggest breakthrough since the development of Building Information Modelling (BIM). The industry has been changing over time; United States has been at the forefront of adoption and implementation of BIM while Australia, United Kingdom and some other developed nations are moving in full force concurrently. At the same time, developing countries are battling with BIM uptake. The BIM awareness and adoption in Nigerian Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) is significantly low; research to adopting this innovation has received very little attention. This piece of work (as part of preliminary investigation of a PhD work) is aimed at exploring the state of BIM within decision makers in Nigerian AEC. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with stakeholders in the industry (Contractor, Consultant and Clients); the transcribed interviews were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The information revealed that, the key players are generally not familiar with the term " Building Information Modelling " or " BIM " although mostly aware of some of its tools (i.e. AutoCAD, Revit etc.). Only a few uses some BIM tools at organisational level 'lonely BIM' and operating model based 'BIM stage 1.' Moreover, no legislative provision on BIM adopting or regulation. Nevertheless, the government is open for new concepts in promoting and advancing the industry only when they are convincing enough. Lack of experts on BIM is a major barrier to its adoption at all levels. Recommendations are made based on the findings based of the exploration for the industry to compete with its global counterpart.
Assessment of Building Information Modeling (BIM) Knowledge in the Nigerian Construction Industry
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an innovative approach that is gradually being implemented across the globe. BIM aids the visualization of what is to be built in a simulated environment in order to identify potential design, construction or operational problems of a facility. Despite established benefits that BIM offers, the adoption of BIM in the Nigerian Construction Industry has been relatively slow. A field survey was conducted with the use of 90 structured questionnaires; self administered via stratified random sampling of stakeholders within the Construction Industry in Kaduna State, Northwestern Nigeria; all structured to identify the respondents' level of awareness of BIM, and extent of usage of BIM. 43 questionnaires were properly filled and returned. With a response rate of 44.77%, the results were analyzed using the Percentile and Relative Index (RI) methods. As a contribution to knowledge, the paper has established that there is a low level of knowledge of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the Nigerian Construction Industry which is associated to the low level of awareness and utilization amongst stakeholders. As such, the paper recommended the need for increased awareness and utilization of BIM via the participation of relevant professional bodies; the integration of BIM into the Academic curriculum; and for the Nigerian Government to facilitate the implementation of BIM in Infrastructure projects, in order to ensure adequate knowledge of BIM towards improving productivity and efficiency in the Nigerian Construction Industry.
An Analysis of Building Information Modeling (BIM) Usage in Nigerian Construction Industry

The global construction industry is in rising demand for Building Information Modeling (BIM) components in new construction projects. Although there has been significant increase in industry-wide acceptance of BIM, and in spite of its benefits, it is still not a standard practice in Nigerian Construction Industry (NCI). This research aimed at exploring the use of BIM among architects in Nigeria. A survey that investigated BIM awareness and usage, BIM software used in projects, activities executed using BIM and barriers to BIM usage was distributed to architects practicing in NCI. Responses were collected using questionnaires and data analyzed through descriptive and statistical tests. The survey results indicated a low usage of BIM in construction projects despite architects showing fair awareness of BIM. The result also revealed BIM was mostly used for architectural detailed design, 3D visualization, architectural modelling, scheduling and construction documents coordination. Lack of clients demand, poor leadership and organization towards digital innovation and cost of training were the three top obstacles to BIM implementation. The research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing insight into BIM usage in Nigeria. It is expected that this knowledge could be useful for BIM implementation and tackle barriers to BIM adoption in the Nigerian construction industry.
Globally, regardless of the level of development of a nation, the influence of the construction sector is robust and well-acknowledged on the growth and development of economies of nations. Onyeagam et al. (2019) described the construction sector as one of the dominant sectors that stimulate the provision of jobs and impact the activities of other sectors of the economy. Eze et al. (2019) see the construction industry as a sector that brings about economic growth, infrastructure acceleration, the apparent impact being a contribution to the GPD of nations, the creation of jobs, increased companies' revenue generation, housing and other infrastructure provisions. For Onyejeakor et al (2020), the construction sector is the mainstay and prime mover of economies of nations. Notwithstanding these vita and critical roles of the construction sector, construction projects are characterised by schedule overruns, budget overruns, poor quality, safety issues, claims and disputes and dissatisfaction of contract parties. Building Information Modelling as a Construction Management Tool in Nigeria

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a process that enhances construction management. One of the major advantages of the BIM is its ability to develop a model that can be used from the initial design to construction and occupancy of the building. In view of this advantage, it can be regarded as a central aspect of construction management. However, in Nigeria, the utilization of BIM as a vital tool for construction management remains at the preliminary stage. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effect of BIM as a tool for construction management in Nigeria and, through this, identify measures to improve or, otherwise, facilitate its use in the Nigerian building industry. To realize this, structured questionnaires were distributed to AEC firms selected through the simple random sampling method. Discussions were also conducted among peers and showed a number of barriers to the use of BIM, which include: lack of support from leadership in the offices, lack of communication among consultants from diverse fields, and lack of awareness on how to use BIM. The data analyzed indicate that BIM has a high impact on the effective supervision of projects, programming and resolution of conflicts during construction. BIM is, therefore, significant in a bid to realizing a high level of efficiency in construction. Particularly, it can guide subcontractors and fabricators in submitting their inputs at an early stage in order to improve the coordination of projects during construction. Moreover, given the high rate of building collapse in Nigeria, due mainly to inefficient construction management, a research on BIM as a tool for building construction is necessary. Worth considering as well is that despite advances in the use of BIM, the processes by which buildings are constructed in Nigeria remain unchanged. The paper, therefore, recommends the development of innovative processes that will include BIM in construction management, more communication and collaboration among diverse professionals and, indeed, increased publicity on the benefits derivable from using BIM in construction management.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a concept that is transforming the way construction is done internationally. Nigeria is lagging behind in adoption of BIM as a collaborative tool amongst professionals in AEC industry. The purpose of this paper is to study the adoption of BIM in Nigeria and determine to what extent it has helped in improving collaboration among consultants in Nigerian construction industry. The research methodology involved using structured questionnaires to 30 AEC firms selected through simple random sampling method. Results showed BIM has a high impact on client satisfaction, time for completion, quality and presentation of different concepts in schematic design. It also showed high impact on conflict resolution, supervision, construction programming and quality of completed jobs during post contract stage. It is a cutting-edge, state of the art technology that is not only transforming, but improving the building delivery/production process in developed countries of the world. Sadly, Nigeria is yet to adopt this revolutionary technology in her construction industry. This study thus, sought to evaluate the present status of application of BIM in building projects in Nigeria, with a view to betoning its importance in improving the present state of building delivery in the country. This was effected by means of a field survey of building professionals in which their perceptions were analyzed, based on a structured questionnaire administration; in order to elicit their level of awareness of BIM application, determine their extent of participation in BIM projects, identify and rank the most suitable procurement method that encourages BIM application, the barriers to the application of BIM and the benefits of BIM application to building delivery in Nigeria. Results/Findings revealed that knowledge of BIM application among professionals is very poor (33%), participation/use of BIM in projects is non-existent, the collaborative method of procurement best supports BIM application, lack of awareness remains the major barrier to BIM application, while simultaneous access to project database by stakeholders is the highest ranked benefit of BIM application. The study concludes that Nigeria still has a long way to go in understanding, embracing and applying BIM to improve the traditional and stagnant state of her building delivery process. Hence, all hands should be on deck; the government, professional bodies, construction organizations and the academia to ensure that BIM becomes a priority with respect to legislations, training, research and use in the Nigerian building industry.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a new approach of construction design. It does not only facilitate the digital representation for designs but also provides all the necessary information for any project before it is constructed. Despite this advantage, the adoption of BIM in Malaysian construction is very low. Motivated by this, current study has focused on assessing current status of BIM implementation in Malaysian construction industry. It has also investigated advantages and disadvantages together with barriers to implementations of BIM and proposing effective strategies for enhancing the BIM implementation in construction industry. Investigation was done through survey where 150 questionnaire forms were distributed and 95 completed forms received back were analyzed with Average Index (AI) and Relative Importance Index (RII) method. Findings of the study revealed that the rate of BIM implementation in construction industry is very low. Major advantages of BIM are improved scheduling, improved drawing coordinated, controlling time and cost and singe detailed model. Enhanced collaboration, requires coordinated drawing, interoperability are the major disadvantages and limitations of BIM. Major barriers to low level of BIM implementation are lack of competent staff to operate the software, unawareness of the technology and non availability of parametric library. Provision of trial software, training of construction staff and introducing of BIM in university curriculum are very effective strategies in enhancing the implementation of BIM.

Studies have shown that construction projects are susceptible to problems such as low productivity, poor safety, inferior working conditions, insufficient quality, lack of timely communication and coordination amongst project stakeholders, and rising litigation. The adoption of Building Information Modeling within the construction industry had led to notable improvement and resulted in improved time-to-market, reduced production cost, improved quality of the product and active customer involvement. The study was aimed at appraising the readiness of Nigerian building contracting firms to adopt Building Information Modeling. The method of study involved a critical exposition of related literature and empirical study employing the mean scores and Relative Importance Index (RII) for analysis. A structured questionnaire was issued to a sample size comprising 81 firms drawn from a finite population of 120 Nigeria building contracting firms operating within Niger State. The result of the study revealed that the level of awareness Building Information Modeling is increasing. Also, Improved commissioning and handover of facility information and Synchronization of procurement with design and construction were identified as the most important benefits of adopting Building Information Modeling; Lack of awareness of the technology and Frequent power failure are the most important barriers to adoption of Building Information Modeling in Nigeria building contracting firm. Nigeria building contracting firms has management and process/project readiness to adopt but do not have people and technology readiness to adopt Building Information Modeling. The study concludes that Nigeria building contracting firms are not yet ready to adopt Building Information Modeling. The study recommends continuous awareness campaign of Building Information Modeling and its potential benefits via education and training to professional bodies, tertiary institutions offering any building construction related programs and stakeholders in the construction industry.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a digital information technology used to transmit information involving architecture, engineering, and construction as a set of interactions in the construction industry. When BIM technology is used as a management system in communication, the delivery of information is more accurate, clear, and detailed.
