This paper explicates two methods used in a study conducted to propose a Malaysian folktale classification system.Fundamentally, three substantial folktale classification systems exist and individually, each system classifies based on three distinctive folktale units: type, motif, and function. Malaysian folktales are one of the intangible cultural heritages that reflect and convey lineage of the past generations to the present. It deserves to be preserved systematically but thus far; such effort is scarce if not lacking in this country. Therefore, a study is conducted to engender a structural classification of the folktales with an aim to preserve such valuable heritage. However, before the classification begins, an important task precedes which are an identification of the Malaysian folktales in a form of literary sources. The identification task is guided by a combination of two qualifying factors: an operational definition established in the study and also an ownership of the folktales. Ultimately, this paper presents the method employed in the identification process and also the accepted and excluded Malaysian folktales as findings of the process.

Makassar folktales, one of local indigenous in South Sulawesi need to preserve and to study in order to maintain its existence. One way to analyze the folktales is using Alan Dundes theory. Dundes proposes motifeme sequences like lack, lack liquidated, deceit, deception, task, task accomplished, interdiction, violation, consequences, and attempted escape to describe the structural typology of the folktales. The writing is library research and applies descriptive qualitative method that relies on linguistic and employing meaning based of data analysis, whilst, the object is Rupama , a book written by Zainuddin Hakim. After analyzing it, the writer finds that the shortest structure of motifeme consists of lack (L) and lack liquidated (LL). Furthermore, folktales also represent that Makassar people believe that evil deed is always punished directly or indirectly. In a study to systematically preserve the Malaysian folktales as one of Malaysia's intangible cultural heritage, a Malaysian Folktale Classification System (MFCS) is proposed to be developed as encouraged by UNESCO. Such a classification system is currently absent in Malaysia. In order to develop a comprehensive classification system, three folktale units are integrated and utilized: function, motif, and type. The use of the three folktale units ensures that the MFCS covers two important facets of folktale: structure and content. The integration of the classification system warrants a complicated classification process. Therefore, a conceptual model, which is central to this article, is constructed as a visual guide to assist the classification process. It illustrates a flow of analysis and all components required to classify namely the three folktale units and their guiding factors, and a primary classification method. A pictorial representation method is utilized to construct the conceptual model. With the conceptual model constructed, it is expected that the analysis of the Malaysian folktales toward the development of the MFCS becomes apparent and guided.
A study is conducted to preserve Malaysian folktales through a development of a Malaysian Folktale Classification System (MFCS) which is currently absent in Malaysia. The systematic classification system is developed by integrating three essential folktale unit: function, motif, and type. Such integration is necessary to ensure the classification system covers two significant aspects of a folktale which are structure/form and con-tent/semantic. As a result of the integration, structural and semantic relationships are born, but they are embedded in the classification system. In order to visualize the duo-facet relationships, a network model coined as a Structural Semantic Folktale Model (SSFM) is constructed. The network model is a vital support and extension of the classification system because it permits deeper study to be conducted on the root of the Malaysian folktales collected. As an effort to visualize the model systematically, a computer assisted qualitative data analysis (CAQDAS) Atlas.ti is utilized. Being the emphasis of this article, it is hoped that the network model would provide a platform for understanding the core of one of Malaysia's intangible cultural heritages and beckons deeper study on such connections.
A STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF FOLKTALES: A MEANS TO AN END

Folktales have been regarded as the simplest form of narrative and tales from various cultures have been analyzed in terms of their structure. The structural analysis of tales can be claimed to begin with Propp's (1958/1968) Morphology of the folktale. Following Propp's groundbreaking morphological classification of Russian tales, studies of structural typology of folktales from different cultures have given rise to story-grammars and led to the heyday of narratology. However, with the growing interest in narrative as a social and psychological phenomenon, structural analyses of stories have come under attack. It is contended that although the explorations of story structures have resulted in interesting descriptions of different models, what is lacking is an explanation of how formal patterns are related to the story's content. Therefore, more recent works in narratological research have called for a narrative analysis that goes beyond structures. This article revisits a structure analysis of folktales. Using a Myanmar (Burmese) folktale as a tutor text, it advocates an investigation of the relationship between form, function and field of a tale, and suggests a structural analysis as a means to gain insights into the cultural determination of the narrative motif and the social purpose of storytelling.
FOLKTALE CONCEPTUAL MODEL BASED ON FOLKTALE CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM OF TYPE, MOTIF, AND FUNCTION
This paper elaborates a study conducted to propose a folktale conceptual model based on folktale classification systems of type, motif, and function. Globally, three distinguish folktale classification systems exist and have been used for many years nonetheless not actually converge and achieve agreement on classification issues. The study aims to develop a conceptual model that visually depicts the combination and connection of the three folktale classification systems. The method opted for the conceptual model development is pictorial representation. It is hoped that the conceptual model developed would be an early platform to subsequently catalyze more robust and cohesive folktale classification system.

Dramatis personae of a folktale is a part of the morphology of folktale which advocates the analysis of folktales based on structure instead of theme and motif. Among others, it works as markers in assisting the identification of embedded structures in a folktale. Nevertheless, the theory from which the dramatis personae originates is foreign to Malaysian context. It raises questions whether the dramatis personae is entirely applicable to Malaysian folktales and what is the pattern once it is applied to a folktale of a different culture. Thus, the objectives of the study are to test the applicability of the dramatis personae on a select Malaysian folktale and once tested, to visualise the pattern of the dramatis personae applied.
