Hong Kong’s Identity Crisis: From Colonialism to Occupy Central (original) (raw)
The paper explores the evolution of Hong Kong's identity from colonial times to the contemporary political landscape marked by the Occupy Central movement. It argues that Hong Kong's identity has shifted from a primarily economic opposition to Chineseness towards a collective identity based on shared liberal political principles, which challenges the narrative of a distinct ethnic identity. The analysis highlights the role of various social movements in this transformation and critiques the conventional use of nationalism in understanding Hong Kong's identity.
