A study of the short message service of a nationwide cellular network
Proceedings of the 6th ACM SIGCOMM on Internet measurement - IMC '06, 2006
In recent years, cellular networks have experienced an astronomical increase in the use of Short Message Service (SMS), making it a popular communication means for interpersonal as well as content provider-to-person usage. Yet little is known about the traffic and message user behavior in real SMS systems. In this paper, we present a measurement study of SMS based on traces collected from a nationwide cellular carrier during a three-week period. We characterize message traffic at both the message level and the conversation thread level. We also examine the "store-and-forward" mechanism of SMS and present initial measurements on how messages are actually delivered.
Nascent communication genres within SMS and MMS
2005
In the world of mobile telephony, SMS represented a major shift in the way we communicate in many parts of the world. Instead of synchronous voice communications, SMS allowed asynchronous text based interaction. SMS was conceived as a way of sending automatically generated messages to users–such as notification of voice mail, a function that it still serves in many cases–it has also developed into a form of interpersonal communication. SMS is now used in a broad variety of situations.
Analysis of the Evolution of Terminal Devices in the Use of SMS Service
The use of new services in communication systems often means reducing the use of existing services or even complete substitution with new services. The development of smart mobile devices as well as reducing the price of data traffic in mobile internet access, makes changes in the current trends of exchanging (primarily text) messages into mobile communications. Statistics show reducing the current growth in the number of sent SMS (Short Message Service) messages, and alternative will represent services such as e-mail and IM (Instant Messaging) communications. An increasing number of applications that enable IM communication (Skype, Facebook, Viber, ...) and abundance of their use by end users are indicative factor that such a mode of communication is becoming a common. This research is directed towards the analysis of forecasting the growth of smart mobile devices to the global data traffic and new offerings for service that meet customer expectations for multimedia. An important f...
The Short Message Service (SMS) allows text-based messages to be sent to and from mobile telephones on a GSM network. Each message has a maximum length of 160 characters. The possibility of using SMS in Africa is growing rapidly high. It is mostly used for things such as medicine awareness and warning notifications. In Mozambique health workers can support diagnosis & treatment through Bulk SMS and even in Uganda, Malawi and Benin health education messages are sent by text messages. SMSbased transactional alerts are SMS's sent each time a change occurs in a bank account, for example, or when your credit card is used then you will get an SMS on your mobile phone. Marketing on a mobile phone has become increasingly popular ever since the rise of SMS in the early 2000s in Europe and some parts of Asia when businesses started to collect mobile phone numbers and send off wanted (or unwanted) content. Many applications need the ability to do real-time notification when events occur. Often the people who need to be kept aware of events are in a remote location. Cell phones have recently started being used in Africa for sending SMS-based information. These simple systems have already had a major impact. The reason why SMS gets through: With the massive growth and inadequate infrastructure in many countries, voice and where available IP are just not feasible unless there is massive investment to bring up the networks. SMS will get through even when the 'network is busy' for hours. Some of the possible services that exist are: car parking systems, M-learning, market information via SMS, automated agricultural answering system and many others. SMS messaging has already shown great potential. The FAO is using SMS messaging as a data transmission system for field workers wishing to send in agricultural reports. The Zambian farmer's union uses SMS messages to distribute market prices. The SMS system has been more beneficiary for farmers in some part of African countries where they can send SMS through mobile and get the instant message reply for taking the decision for selling the crops at good price. A local management information system for small farmers and traders gives information on prices, trade volumes, market flows and growing conditions in local language via SMS on mobile phones. In this thesis the main finding is about in which of the respective areas the SMS system is being used and how does it help the human life to be more comfort.
Mobile Devices and Communication: An Analysis
Journal of Internet …, 2007
Communication through mobile devices is no longer treated as a new phenomenon. Nevertheless, consumers' attitude towards electronic marketing applications is still vague from the perspective of acceptance. Text messaging is currently the best way to keep in touch when the environment is not conducive to talk which includes being in a noisy bar, on a crowded train, in a meeting or just do not want to be overheard. The purpose of this paper was to determine factors that influence consumer behaviour (mobile phone owners) in communicating via SMS services. Indirectly, this research will contribute to the mechanism used by telecommunication service companies to communicate about their services. By identifying the influential factors and isolating approaches that will not attract consumer, this can eventually contribute to the success of introducing new or modified products and services.
Sms: Simplifying mobile services-for users and service providers
2006
Abstract To date, mobile services have failed to match the explosive growth of the World Wide Web. This, we argue, is because current services are difficult to use, design and deploy. In this paper we describe a concept for a new class of services, addressing these issues. We call these services Simple Mobile Services (SMS). SMS will be simple for users to find, use, and trust; similarly they will be simple for providers to develop and deploy.
Impact of Short Message Service- full paper
The rapid advances in communication technology have created a world in which people are brought closer by the ease of interacting through mobile phones, the internet and text messaging. The language is achieving new colours and tones. The requirements in language versatility, which are universally understood, are overcome by the new short message service (SMS) language that is emerging rapidly. The cellphones that are conveniently used for social communication and in business transactions are invaluably helpful but can equally be extremely detrimental to the learning and development process of learners of other languages especially foreign language learning.
