A Framework on urban design strategies for sustainability of cultural and historical dimension in urban landscape (original) (raw)

Urban Design in Transferring Cultural Heritage to the Future

The aim of this paper is to present a case study in traditional urban texture of Bartin. The plans targeting at the maintenance of historical urban texture has not been successfully put into practice yet. Therefore, the historical urban texture could not be protected. Thus, there is an urgent need to utilize relevant design tools and design guides to protect, restore, re-functioning and to improve historical city structure of Bartin. In this case study, urban design approach aiming to create harmony between old and new buildings in the built environment has been presented. At first, physical conditions at historical urban texture has been researched. The problems have been determined and the solutions have been suggested in accordance with the potentialities. By means of suggested urban design applications, sustainable protection and sustainability of cultural heritage can be achieved and a bridge between the past and the future can be built.

Conservation of Urban Heritage in Historical Centres of Contemporary Cities

WIT Transactions on the Built Environment, 2022

Cities with no memories certainly miss the joy of presenting the past and, as a result, struggle to dream of building their future. The aim of this research stems from the importance of urban and architectural heritage in historic districts of cities in the present and future. This importance leads to sustainable development, which satisfies the needs of the present and protects future rights. Also, it highlights the importance of studying "urban conservation". Moreover, there is an increasing population growth which causes expansion in contemporary cities; the reason behind this is the rapid expansion of modern urban, commercial and residential land use towards the historical centre of cities. The findings of this research confirm that orientation, which is accentuated in the present, is necessary to link the conservation of the old and planning for the contemporary projects in a unified architectural and constructional policy. The comparative research methodology uses an analytical approach through many successful and unsuccessful experiments and attempts to answer several questions, such as: What is urban conservation? How do cities of historical depth deal with modern planning? What should we do as we face the rapid increase in modern needs in the present? What are the reasons behind the loss of urban heritage? Why does urban heritage decrease, particularly in Arab cities? Finally, the research reaches its conclusions and possible recommendations. This paper shows that preventing the new residential expansion or any other modern function in the historical centre is a must unless done to create a balance between the old and contemporary through rehabilitating and investing in the heritage.

Sustainable Methodology for Architecture and Urban Cons ervation of Heritage Areas: Theatrical and Application

Many cities in the Middle East are very rich with heritage from different cultures. Deterioration of historical monuments and buildings can be easily noticed in such cities. This is due to different factors including environmental condition, and the change in the social and economic behaviour of the city residents. To preserve such wealth of heritage, many rehabilitation and preservation strategies were adapted, but unfortunately were not fully successful due to inappropriate political decisions. Typically, statistics showed that the number of squatters and slum parts inside the heritage areas have increased and that their identity and urban and architecture image have changed partially. The urban fabric has been also adversely affected which diminished the ability for the inhabitants to stay in their city to preserve it. One of the pressing needs today is to preserve cultural heritage of historic cities by preserving their historic character and at the same time reach a descent quality of life. The main objective of the research is to propose a methodology to sustainable urban conservation while keeping appropriate aspects of modernization in an integrated manner. The methodology is extracted from the analysis of two case-studies of the historic Arab cities (Hafsia and Asilah). Then applying the proposed methodology to the urban fabric and architectural character of buildings of the historical city of Jeddah.

Sustainable Urban Design of Historical City Centers

Energy Procedia, 2015

In the last few decades, sustainability had been introduced as one of the major concepts of design. It is the key to preserve a safe future for our communities. This concept introduces many techniques that change the way to read the urban configuration of urban heritage to search for the main parameters in urban space that manage the relation between designers think; it changes also the configuration of urban and architectural environment. First we try to space configuration and urban behavior. This study has as aim to create a model of analyzing urban space as a support of urban behavior and a generator of social sustainability through preserving heritage and traditional values. The analysis model is drawn theorically then tested on a set of case studies of historical city centers to prove its efficiency; the main case tested in this work is the historical center of Constantine (Casbah). The analysis model is based on space syntax methods and parameters, using applied analysis based on plans of different historical phases of urban growth and on site investigation. As a conclusion, we try by this work to show parameters of sustainability in urban space and the influence of urban changes on these parameters. The analysis model can be used to show how to use these parameters in future design operations to ensure urban sustainability.

Urban landscape in sustainable transformation: cultural heritage and contemporary architecture integration within urban area

IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering, 2020

Since the debates on the New Heritage Paradigm for Managing Change in 2000s, the polemics on "cultural heritage/urban preservation" vs. "urban development", challenges of integrating contemporary architecture within historic urban area and gaps between theory and practice still occur despite the adopted Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) approach in 2011. The article provides a research aimed at finding current trends in theory and practice concerning the comprehensive assessment of cultural heritage preservation and urban development practice, critical views on HUL approach and development of new alternative approaches & strategies, including the search of the new forms of urban heritage as contemporary architecture, and the best practices in integration of cultural heritage sites with contemporary architecture within urban area. It contributes to the further researches and discussions on the form, direction and capacity of contemporary architecture integration within historic urban landscape to ensure managing urban changes for sustainable urban development.

Heritage Contribution in Sustainable City

The concept of sustainability has been an integral part of development work since the late 1970s. Sustainability is no longer a buzzword but a reality that must be addressed by cities all over the world. Increasing empirical evidence indicates that city sustainability is not just related to technical issues, such as carbon emissions, energy consumption and waste management, or on the economic aspects of urban regeneration and growth, but also it covers social well-being of different groups living within increasingly cosmopolitan towns and cities. Heritage is seen as a major component of quality of life, features that give a city its unique character and provide the sense of belonging that lies at the core of cultural identity. In other words, heritage by providing important social and psychological benefits enrich human life with meanings and emotions, and raise quality of life as a key component of sustainability. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to examine the role that built cultural heritage can play within sustainable urban development.

URBAN CULTURAL HERITAGE -A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

GEOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS, 2020

While urban heritage is growing its significance in the global urban context, there remains a lot of ambiguity in its perception. This article conceptualises the evolution and the various approaches to urban cultural heritage, understand its meaning, values and significance in the society and underlines its relationship with urbanisation in a developing city.

An urban design framework for sustainability of historical environment: A case of Safranbolu, Turkey

Historical environments as open space museums which exhibit their own selves are historical heritages which demonstrate and reflect cultural identity. Turkey has a lot of settlements which are full of cultural and historical traces, but some abandoned and demolished parts of the historical settlements have suffered from a separation between the historical city centers. In order to integrate these areas to the other parts of the whole, revitalization, regeneration and re-functioning are necessary. Nonetheless, the key question is which target leading regeneration and design process will gain priority: heritage and culturally led regeneration or design led regeneration. Urban design process should contain these issues. In order for regeneration and sustainability of the heritage area and its identity, it is one of the basic principles in planning or design process that current tendencies of the community and public needs should be determined. In this study, a framework on urban design process considering the issues mentioned above was conducted in Safranbolu-Turkey, which was added to the list of world heritage. In the framework context, considering regeneration, sustainability, culture and community, some urban design scenarios have been built and evaluated. Furthermore, design guides as an application tool for good practice have been suggested.
