A Primer of Arabic Rhetoric

A Primer of Arabic Rhetoric, 2022

The reason for writing this work lies in a poor grasp of its contents by teachers and students. More than forty years of teaching has convinced me that this subject is not satisfactorily taught at any educational institutions in South Africa. This problem can be attributed to the functional approach to English language teaching at school level that has been adopted here (and elsewhere) which pays insufficient attention to many aspects of rhetoric. I have found nothing satisfactory for present-day novices who need to be led up this pathway in a manner that will include their prior (almost informal) understanding of many concepts of rhetoric from English. To highlight some parallels between rhetoric in Arabic and English, I have prepared the second chapter. I have also appended English examples at the end of many study units to consolidate my explanation.

The Rhetoric of Oratory in English and Arabic: An Applicable Study to One of Imam Ali's Oration

Al-Mustansiriya Journal of Arts , 2012

Languages have different means of communication, some of which are verbal and others nonverbal. For the sake of expressing, stating, asking, requesting and emphasizing certain types of information, we sometimes tend to use some of these verbal or nonverbal means either directly or indirectly. Therefore, scholars and rhetoricians have studied most of these means and the properties that can lead speakers to select a highly effective discourse in order to get a successful understanding of meaning in its literal sense as well as to choose the correct Lexis to unambiguously comprehend the intended meaning. They also have tackled the ways of getting a persuasive discourse by using different aspects, some of which are syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, poetic, stylistic, etc. One of these ways that are used to get a persuasive speech and to sway an audience's opinion is the style or art of oration.

Traditional Rhetorical Sciences and System of Speech in Arabic (An analytical and critical study in Arab Rhetorical Sciences)

2018

There is an urgent need to develop the rhetorical sciences in Arabic. The language of man develops and renews by the intellectual sources. By the changing in the concepts the languages change their sources of expressions, but the doctrines and theories always represent the spirit of the time, such as Classicalism and Romanism represents the spirit of its time. It means that every age has its logic, so the old literary criticism or Arab rhetorical criticism in Arabic represents an era has its own logic as the modern criticism has its own logic. We cannot deny that the old and modern literary criticism in Arabic has flourished by its connection to the western literatures. As well as, the western literatures flourished by their connection to the eastern literatures. Therefore, the literary research must be free from the populist tendencies, blind fanaticism and national arrogance. We cannot remove the old rhetorical sciences. In other words, the language-each language-has its potential....

Reiteration as an Instance of Lexical Cohesion in theQur'anic Discourse: The Case of At-Takweer Surah

2020

As one of thecohesive devices in the development of discourse, "reiteration"has been considered as an effective textual strategy involving any unit of atext, such as morphemes, words, phrases, clauses, or sentences, as various means ofachieving emphasis, clarity, continuity, multiplicity, or textual integrity. Reiteration can even be extended as a method of contributing to the progress anddevelopment of ideas. But, if used unskillfully, it could simultaneouslyproduce redundancy, monotony, or even banality. Several studies have indicated that reiteration of words and utterances is one of the distinctive textual features of The Holy Qur'an(cf. for instance, Abdul-Raof, 2006, Saffarzaddeh, 2004).The present study hasaimed to investigate different forms of reiterationand the types of function they serve in The Qur'anic discourse, in general, and in a single Qur'anic Surah (i.e., At-Takweer), in particular. Our intention has been to examine not only the cohesive functions that reiterations as instances of lexical cohesion serve, but also to investigate the rhetorical effects produced as a result of reiterating utterances in the entire discourse of the text in question. Then investigating how they are used inreflecting sparkling ideas and intentions.

Verifying the Terminology of Arabic Rhetorical Tradition: The Case of ʾIltifāt

Lexikos, 2023

The terminology of Arabic Balāgha suffers various problems, such as having multiple terms that refer to one concept and multiple concepts that have one term. These problems cause vagueness and misunderstandings in many modern and contemporary studies. This article aims to decrease the possibility of both ambiguity and misunderstanding by suggesting a comprehensive methodology to verify Arabic rhetorical terminology. This methodology consists of two procedures: (1) identifying and analyzing the various concepts that a one-term refers to, and (2) identifying and analyzing the different terms that refer to one concept. These procedures are applied to the term ʾiltifāt and the concept of 'shifting among first, second, and third pronouns'. The Arab classical rhetoricians used ʾiltifāt to refer to thirteen different figures, styles, and features. Similarly, they used seven different terms for one concept. The reasons behind this terminology disorder are investigated and the necessity of a contextual dictionary of Arabic Balāgha is argued for.
