Modernization of public spaces in streets of historical cities by giving identity (case study of Qazvin

The concept of identity has a high potential in social functions of public spaces. Among urban spaces, streets include a significant percent of public spaces and have a key role in their connection, cohesion and coherence and in improving the relation between human and environment. So, among urban elements, streets are considered as the most important elements giving identity to the city. Most of public spaces of Iran's historical cities have an identity contrast between traditional and modern spaces; it is resulted from globalization during development. Our objective is creating anidentity-function relation to make an objective-subjective relation between two different traditional and modern identities. In order to answer this question that which features should Qazvin's historical and modern streets have for changing in to the attractive public spaces with a desirable urban identity, we collected our data by the methods of documental studies and field noting and analyzed the statistical information by descriptive analyses. And finally, we presented some suggestions.

Appreciate the beauty and proportions of people living in cities and urban areas around our late impact is. Modern phenomenon over time, change the physical structure, patterns and new construction. Cities in terms of the historical value and visual fading identity nostalgic textures and varying in quality and value have diminished. It's also a great impact on the time and forgotten identity disorientation because our town is authentic. If human understanding of the meaning of the symbolic, cultural, social space and it does not feel what will happen? Also pay attention to the form, meaning and function in the context of how cities can take valuable? What happens when citizens do not feel safe in the city? Citizens also impact on the collective memory of historical value to the tissues? This paper is an attempt to analyze the proportions of buildings with historic value, "Sami Mosque, Haji bath; Rahmat Samii, home Mofakham" Saghari Sazan street in which the unity of form and proportions in plan and the wall and because of its impact on collective memory and sense of space.

Study on the Role of Social Identity in Creation of a Public Space (Case study: Naghsh-e-Jahan Square in Isfahan as a Public Space of the Safavid Era)

The architecture of public spaces of every civilization is one of the most underlying issues determining the social identity of that age. Also, social history is a guideline for the formation and success of these spaces. For the retrieval of the lost identity of races due to preservation of historical identity sequence, one can refer to the past and reread the signs and meanings hidden in the body. Despite using coercion and seizure of public property by the state to build Naqshe-e Jahan Square in the Safavid Era, the state could make a balance between social identity and public space and the effects of which have remained to date. This study aims at analyzing the effectiveness of the Safavid Era in the transformation of the meaning of space and making a social identity for Public spaces. In other words, the study aims at analyzing the way of making social identity in the Safavid Era and its role in making favorable public space. The study has applied documentary and library methods and has employed the social history method to analyze the effects of social trends in architecture. In this way, this study has focused the theoretical analysis of Naqsh-e Jahan Square as the indicator of public space of that age. To this end, after introducing the intellectual basis of the Safavid Era, the social results obtained from these thoughts and the impact on public space architecture and its social acceptability in this age have been investigated. This study is based on the hypothesis that the political and social measures taken to make religious and cultural unity have left the most effect on making an identity for the Public spaces. The results of the study show that along with the increased authority of central government, choosing dominant religion plays a key role in creating new contexts in different sections such as art and architecture. On the other hand, belonging to Iranian history has affected the creation of a new Iranian identity. The results obtained from the study showed that the public space of the Safavid Era includes three political, religious, and geographical dimensions in terms of establishment time. Also, in terms of reasons in the social procedure, it includes three systematic physical, spatial, and constructive sections. These factors changed the public spaces of that age into spaces with unique properties, which could find social legality and identity according to space audiences, other than the governors.

The Effect of Change in Urban Squares on Urban Identity: The Case of Konya

Change is an inevitable fact because of the structure of cities. This study aims to investigate the effect of this change-that urban squares undergo with the decisions changed in time and political and cultural identity that the city exhibits-on urban identity. It also proposes realizing the design principles of urban squares to become important urban identity elements. For this, the paper opted for a study including spatial reading and interviews with the citizens using the research field. The data were complemented by documentary analysis, including literature research related to research problem. The visual data were obtained from satellite images and archives of Konya Municipality. The analysis was conducted by realizing spatial readings on the change observed on visual data, and evaluated via interviews. According to the results of case study, it is determined that there can be positive and negative effects of the change on urban identity. The ongoing socio-cultural and socioeconomic activities in urban squares form the social side of the urban identity. The other physical elements that urban squares have are in the scope of artificial environment urban identity components affecting urban identity. As part of the mentioned artificial environment identity components, the variety in the equipment elements with different physical features like focal points, symbols, boundaries, sitting elements, water features and top cover contributes to urban identity in catchy and impressive quality.

The Impact of City Spaces and Identity in the Residents' Behavior

In today's world, defining a city's identity is one of the most important parts of a city's social life. Cities must have their own characters and uniqueness in order to transfer it to their residents. Therefore, as public city spaces, which affect the urban quality and reflect the culture and behavior of the society, are major functional and visual factors, and show the welfare of the residents, it is better to start evaluating the city and its citizens by analyzing these factors. Meanwhile, in the urban level, a city texture and landscape, which illustrates the streets, squares and also buildings as its main components must especially be regarded from a historical point of view in order to achieve a more identifiable city. In recent years, along with the quick urban development, the cities' shapes have exactly changed. They do not follow their traditional patterns any more. Thus, lots of problems in urban furniture and also city identity have risen. There are no united and organized patterns for designing urban furniture, especially in Famagusta, Cyprus, as a historical coastal city, which is selected as a case study. These problems always confuse people and also cause visual pollution. So, this research wants to discuss urban VIS design (visual identity/image system) in public spaces in order to solve the problem. Therefore, the study tries to define the visual identity system and develops it in the case study by particular attention to history, nature and culture of the city and citizens to gain a unique urban identity.

MEASURING PUBLIC SPACES IDENTITY IN JEDDAH CORNICHE

Jeddah; as an Arabian city; has a unique inherited social image in its public spaces. Over long generations, Arabs used to head to the deserted areas, away from inhabited zones or along the coastal lines to spend a social time with their families and friends, practicing some outdoor recreational activities, as hunting, barbecuing, or picnicking. This inherited social image moved into open public spaces inside Arabian cities. Architecturally, it is required a delicate design that reflects this unique character and responds to its requirements. Since the 1970s, Jeddah Corniche development is according to universal style, regardless this special character of public recreational activities. It depended on beautification more than achieving functional areas that absorb the inherited Arabian behavior, which affects negatively the identity in design. The research attempted to measure the identity of the public space in Jeddah Corniche according to its traditional image of recreational activities. The methodology depended on avoiding subjective evaluation by measuring the identity of the urban elements according to the urban qualities that help in fulfilling the community unique requirement, also examining them according to the urban literature that serves a specific behavior. Results and recommendations serve studies of development processes to achieve identity in design.

Assessment of urban identity characteristics in public places: A case study of Ortaköy Square

The city square is the best interaction point between various inhabitants and the city. It is the place where urban identity is well grasped. This study aimed to understand if it is important to have urban identity characteristics to be a successful public place, or not. Therefore, urban identity and public place terms analyzed in the notion of identity and the notion of place. The significance of the city square emerged as a connection between urban identity and public place. To clarify the importance of the urban identity characteristics in successful public places, Or-taköy Square is chosen for the case study. The study area is a public place that the richness of urban identity characteristics was defined in the researches before. In this study the relationship between urban identity, public place and citizens was explained by using the methods which are literature research and photo-analysis. According to these analysis, it is proved that Ortaköy Square is a successful public place. Binding on the studies before, urban identity characteristics were pointed out. Ortaköy Square has all the components to reflect urban identity. It is cleared that urban identity is a necessity to be a successful public place and it exists especially in city squares.

A Research on Urban Identity: Sample of Kadıköy District

Cities have idiosyncratic identities composed of the combination of identity elements which are generated by the natural, social or built environments. Due to globalization, neo-liberal approaches and urban branding, cities have lost their unique identities to a significant extent; and resemblances among cities have gradually emerged. Therefore, some research questions occur such as which urban elements are the identity elements that form the unique identity; what are the problems that threaten the identity elements; and which identity features should be emphasized. The aim of this study is to analyze the unique identity and identity elements, and also determine the positive and negative identity features of an urban district. Central Kadıköy, located on the Asian side of Istanbul, was chosen as the experiment area and 117 questionnaires were conducted. The results have revealed that the most frequently defined unique identity element of Central Kadıköy is the Bull Statue; the second one is İskele Square and the third one is the Moda Coast. According to the focal points of this study, relation with nature is an important identity feature that needs to be emphasized; on the other hand, over-urbanization and deterioration of historical identity are the characteristics that should be prevented.
