Study on Optimal Establishment for Spare Engines by Applying Weibull’s Distribution with the NHPP Model

Transactions of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers - A, 2018

Abstract: This paper described an optimized estimation procedure for spare engines. It is based on the system reliability of aircraft engines and uses Weibull's distribution function with a nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) model. For the NHPP model of engine failure, the maximum likelihood estimation method was applied to calculate the parameters for the failure intensity function. Critical time calculation was done by a normalized failure intensity function and by using the Newton–Raphson method. The optimized spare engine number from this result was compared with the one from the Poisson distribution function that is conceptualized based on a homogeneous failure rate. It was shown that the procedure for spare engine estimation from this study using a nonhomogeneous concept for failure rate is affordable for measurements. This rocedure can be generally applied to determine optimal spares using failure data.
