Spirituality in Management: A Review of Contemporary and Traditional Thoughts and Agenda for Research

This article presents a literature review and agenda for research in the field of spirituality in management. To understand the conceptual underpinning of spiritual aspects of the human self, this article covers the contemporary thoughts of humanistic psychology, human wellness and traditional thoughts from ancient Indian wisdom. In the later part, the mainstream 'spirituality at workplace' literature is reviewed and a conceptual convergence is identified in the form of three strands; harmony with self, harmony in work environment and experience or belief in transcendence. Potential contribution of the study is in conceptualizing spirituality in business organizations based on synthesis of both traditional and contemporary thoughts and a detailed agenda for research in this field.

The emergence of expensive shopping arcades, highly costly hotels and restaurants, availability of multiple digital payment options, convenient online shopping of everything ranging from clothes, furniture, staples to all variety of meal options right at the doorstep is leading to continuous increase in needs, wants and desires of all classes from lower, middle to upper class. Spirituality has taken over the matter of reducing stress in workforce and management. The thought behind writing this paper is to know about the reality of corporate life. There is lot of debate on being spiritual so a research is carried out and survey is done to find out the exact mentality and outlook of corporate workforce. A lot of content is taken from hindu scripture Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta.

Spirituality at Workplace: An Essence for the Business

Today's business environment is becoming so challenging and pressurized that there arises a need to create a spiritual workplace in the organisation. Spirituality is " our inner consciousness " (Guillory, 2000). This paper focuses on the core concept of spirituality and its growing role for organisational success. This is a conceptual study and based on observations and secondary sources of data like journals, books, web-sites, newspaper articles. The author has devised a model representing the role of spirituality in organisational success. The devised model establishes a linkage between spirituality at workplace with individual and group level benefits that influences the employees' productivity and organisational performance. Through this study growing role of spirituality at workplace has been highlighted so that management can frame strategies accordingly.

A study on importance of Spirituality in managing a company

The current paper puts light on the importance of spirituality in the modern business world. This paper focuses on the loss of human touch from the people wrapped up in their formal business attire working hard to achieve all the material happiness that the corporate world has to offer them , leaving behind the intangible essence of life that matters the most. This paper focuses on the need to adopt more of a humanistic approach over a corporate robotic approach on the part of management towards their human resource. This paper studies the impact of change in leadership styles on the working pattern of employees. It studies the impact of spirituality on motivating the internal customers of the organisation which eventually leads the organisation to success. The paper clarifies that spirituality and management are interconnected.

Workplace Spirituality- A New Paradigm in Management

Workplace spirituality has been researched for a decade and while there have been papers studying the same, it is still not adequately applied in real-time in the workplace. This is due to the major constraint of lack of systems approach to the entire gamut of the input, throughput and output of the workplace spirituality systems and processes. There is also a lot of confusion surrounding the definition and the meaning of the concept of workplace spirituality. This paper attempts to fill this gap in research by putting together the various dimensions of workplace spirituality. It addresses the various implications for organizations and relates it to motives beyond the bottom line for managers and organizations at large. This paper is concluded with a model which may be empirically tested in further studies. The major contribution of this paper is in the form of compiling all major research studies in the form of an empirically testable model.

During the last two decades, interest in the field of workplace spirituality has continued to grow. However, will workplace spirituality be another management fad? Human Relations, Organisational Development, Total Quality Management and Quality of Working Life were all more deeply researched than spirituality at work. In this paper, I discuss the relevance of Institutional Theory to examine the faddish nature of the workplace spirituality discourse. With the increase in 'spiritual talk', I argue that a controversial issue is how we could ascertain the extent to which organizations are seeking legitimacy rather than a genuine commitment to an authentic spirituality.

Which Spirituality at the Workplace ? : Is Corporate Spirituality the Answer

Growing curiosity in the workplace and corporate spirituality has headed towards the expansion of a novel paradigm in organizational behavior. The phenomenon of workplace spirituality is gaining attention day by day. However, the exact definition of "workplace spirituality" is still under question. This study endeavors provision of a literature with a critical review on spirituality at the workplace by investigating the fundamental justification of the main developments concerning spirit at work. In this study, different perspectives and dimensions of workplace spirituality are discussed along with their significance describing the sense, importance and special effects of spirituality from the perspective of work setting. Though workplace spirituality is reflected as an extremely subjective and logical paradigm, practically all of the theoretical definitions recognize that spirituality comprises a sense of completeness, connectedness at work, and profound principles. Workplace spirituality has been deliberated as one of the unique ways of enhancing the performance of employees. Spirituality at the workplace is not about spiritual or religious beliefs. Rather, spirituality is about individuals, who recognize their beings as spirited creatures. Corporate spirituality is categorically about people involved in shared affection, fascination intimacy and belongingness with each other at the workplace. Consequently, corporate spirituality can be well-thought-out as the cherishing of workers spirit and inner life. In particular, this research focuses on perceptions of spirituality with regard to individual level, group level, and organization level. Furthermore, future research directions are proposed in the light of given analysis.

Spirituality in Management

The purpose of this study is to explore the individual perceptions about integrating spirituality in management and to assess the benefits of spirituality towards organizational performance. This paper focuses on the impact of spirituality in management for performance improvement. The methodology adopted involves descriptive field study using a structured questionnaire as the research instrument with statistical analysis to arrive at the results. The results of the study reveal that people are positive about integrating spirituality into management and it is viewed as a highly acceptable and beneficial concept in the workplace, especially in the current turbulent economic situation in the world. Also it is noted that several individuals and organizations are attempting to modify their way of working to include spirituality in the workplace as well as in business.
