Studying system development methodologies: an examination of research methods

Changes in organizational structures, competitive environments, technologies and economies are altering the types and complexity of computer-based information systems. For methodologies, tools and techniques to evolve to meet these changing needs, research to assess current system development practices would be expected. However, there is little evidence that the evaluation of methodologies and improvement of the systems development process are keeping pace with technological and organizational changes. This paper analyses existing research on system development methodologies and discusses the research needed to provide the information scholars and practitioners will need for the evaluation, selection and development of methodologies in a changing environment.

Despite over a decade of study, little is really known about information systems development and the use of systems development methodologies. There has been little evaluation of methodologies in use or examination of the selection, development, adaptation or use of methodologies in practice. This paper discusses this lack of knowledge and its ramifications for research and practice.
A Framework for Selection of Information Systems Development Methodologies

Information systems are increasingly becoming regarded as crucial to an organisation's success. A development methodology for an information system is a framework to organize, program and supervise the process of developing an information system. There many are different methodologies for information systems development. Obviously, no methodology can claim that it can be applied to any organisation. Therefore, organisations should have an evaluation framework for selecting an appropriate and efficient methodology. In this paper, we propose an evaluation framework for selecting information systems development methodology in order to facilitate the development process of information systems in organisations. In this work, we will describe and compare different hard and soft systems approaches at first, then in the following sections, one kind of methodology's classifications is pointed and one methodology from each class is introduced. Finally, a comparison framework is proposed and methodologies are compared by this framework. The value of this framework is that, with use of it, organisations can evaluate their development methodology with respect to the key features of it before implementing any methodology as well as expending extra costs. This framework is theoretical in nature, and is build based on a review of related literature.
An examination of information systems development methodologies research in Australia

This paper assesses the current state of Information Systems Development Methodologies (ISDM) research in Australia, in what Avison and Fitzgerald (2003) refer to as 'the post methodology era'. In doing so, it revisits the seminal work of Wynekoop and Russo (1997) by identifying and classifying a sample of Australian-based ISDM research, according to their research purpose and research method. It also proposes extensions to these classifications to include an examination of ontological domains and knowledge areas. This sample, drawing from a number of high-quality journals, conferences, and electronic sources, highlights a number of key issues of interest to ISDM researchers. A discussion of these issues, along with an outline for future research efforts, is provided.

Abstract: Those aspects of development which are controlled as part of most IS development methods are not those aspects which contribute most to organisational support and flexibility. A framework for the selection of development methods and their application, which considers the organisational impact of the resulting information system, is discussed.

Given the espoused importance of ISDMs, there is surprisingly little evidence of rigorous, industry-based research into practice-in-use or into the development of methodology adaptation guidelines for practitioners. In this article, we develop a framework for future research, intended to stimulate and guide investigations into an ISDM that is used globally. Building upon a review of existing IS literature on ISDM usage, a fresh research direction is proposed, adopting a socio-technical perspective with an emphasis on process-oriented research. The paper suggests that individuals and the work context are important factors affecting the use of ISDMs by IS practitioners. These factors are incorporated into the framework through the combination of the process of technology appropriation with a practice-oriented approach. The paper fills a gap in the literature by proposing an in-depth, multi-method, investigation of the practices adopted by a leading global IT company, collecting a large pool of data and with analysis underpinned by a strong conceptual framework. The paper argues the importance of studies of the method adaptation process involving real projects and real developers working on real problems.
An empirical investigation into the adoption of systems development methodologies

A postal survey was conducted to determine: the extent to which systems development methodologies are used in practice; the rating of their contribution to the development process, and the future trend in methodology adoption, whether the trend is towards increased usage or not. Among the main findings of the study were that 60 percent of the respondents were not using methodologies. Also, only 6 percent of respondents reported following a methodology rigorously. Finally, the forecast is not positive for methodology advocates: 79 percent of those not using a methodology indicated that they did not intend to adopt one.

The use and modification of Information Systems Development Methodologies has continued to be an important issue for research and practice as developers struggle to complete largescale IS development projects. Whilst there is a widespread belief that the use of an ISDM is appropriate when developing an information system, a considerable body of evidence exists to indicate that few practitioners actually use methodologies as described. Instead, ISDMs are tailored to create a unique instantiation for each project. This study explores the application of ISDMs in a large global IT company. The paper contributes to the understanding of ISDM application in two ways. Firstly, it identifies two steps in the tailoring process: a deliberate tailoring of the methodology prior to the commencement of a project based on developers’ perceptions of the project and its context; and ad hoc tailoring to meet the real, unfolding development needs of the project.
