Sudden transition to chaos in plasma wave interactions
Physics of Plasmas, 1998
The coherent three-wave interaction, with linear growth in the higher frequency wave and damping in the two other waves, is reconsidered; for equal dampings, the resulting three-dimensional ͑3-D͒ flow of a relative phase and just two amplitudes behaved chaotically, no matter how small the growth of the unstable wave. The general case of different dampings is studied here to test whether, and how, that hard scenario for chaos is preserved in passing from 3-D to four-dimensional flows. It is found that the wave with higher damping is partially slaved to the other damped wave; this retains a feature of the original problem ͑an invariant surface that meets an unstable fixed point, at zero growth rate͒ that gave rise to the chaotic attractor and determined its structure, and suggests that the sudden transition to chaos should appear in more complex wave interactions.
Intermittent chaos in nonlinear wave–wave interactions in space plasmas
Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, 2005
There is increasing observational evidence of nonlinear wave-wave interactions in space and astrophysical plasmas. We first review a number of theoretical models of nonlinear wave-wave interactions which our group has developed in past years. We next describe a nonlinear three-mode truncated model of Alfvén waves, involving resonant interactions of one linearly unstable mode and two linearly damped modes. We construct a bifurcation diagram for this three-wave model and investigate the phenomenon of intermittent chaos. The theoretical results presented in this paper can improve our understanding of intermittent time series frequently observed in space and astrophysical plasmas.
Chaotic saddles in nonlinear modulational interactions in a plasma
Physics of Plasmas, 2012
A nonlinear model of modulational processes in the subsonic regime involving a linearly unstable wave and two linearly damped waves with different damping rates in a plasma is studied numerically. We compute the maximum Lyapunov exponent as a function of the damping rates in a two-parameter space, and identify shrimp-shaped self-similar structures in the parameter space. By varying the damping rate of the low-frequency wave, we construct bifurcation diagrams and focus on a saddle-node bifurcation and an interior crisis associated with a periodic window. We detect chaotic saddles and their stable and unstable manifolds, and demonstrate how the connection between two chaotic saddles via coupling unstable periodic orbits can result in a crisis-induced intermittency. The relevance of this work for the understanding of modulational processes observed in plasmas and fluids is discussed.
Open Physics, 2013
In this paper, an attempt to develop the original single mode theory describing the nonlinear dynamics of a linearly unstable plasma wave, excited by the resonant interaction with energetic ions near the stability threshold to the case of n interacting plasma modes has been made. The effects of an energetic ion source and classical collisional processes represented by the Krook, diffusion and dynamical friction (drag) collision operators are included in the model. For numerical purposes, the problem has been reduced to ten nonlinearly coupled integro-differential equations. In comparison to the previous papers, the system revealed similar (the steady-state, oscillation, and blow-up solutions), as well as quite new types of the amplitudes behaviour, i.e. different levels of competition between the modes.
Ionization waves: from stability to chaos and turbulence
European Physical Journal D, 2002
The spatio-temporal dynamics of self-excited ionization waves in a neon glow discharge is experimentally investigated. Various mechanisms leading to ionization waves chaos and turbulence are identified: subharmonics cascade, Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse scenario, and spatie-temporal intermittency. The dynamical states involved in the transition scenarios from stability to chaotic regimes are characterized through both temporal and spatic-temporal analysis by means of the Biorthogonal Decomposition (BD).
Chaotic Excitations of Rogue Waves in Stable Parametric Region for Highly-Energetic Pair Plasmas
2021
We have studied the Rogue wave existence and propagation in Ion-acoustic (IA) mode for the highly energetic case using kappa distributed electrons in accordance with the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation that is modified KdV and extended KdV equation. We have used reductive perturbation method. We first examined the linear dispersive behaviour in Ion-acoustic mode. Obtaining the Nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we simulated Rogue wave and examined dynamics of it, and its response to small perturbations. We discussed the possibility of generation of Rogue wave as well as the stability of this against various parameters like wave number, spatial and time component. This study is quite helpful for understanding some prominent points of the nonlinearity of IA waves and Rogue wave generation of the highly energetic case in space plasma also in a laboratory plasma.
Nonintegrable Interaction of Ion Acoustic and Electromagnetic Waves in a Plasma
Physical Review E Statistical Physics Plasmas Fluids and Related Interdisciplinary Topics, 1997
In this paper we re-examine the one-dimensional interaction of laser and ion acoustic waves in a plasma. Here we perform a numerical investigation to examine the stability of the model. We find that for slightly over dense plasmas, the propagation of stable solitary modes can occur in an adiabatic regime where the ion acoustic electric field potential is enslaved to the electromagnetic field of a laser. But if the laser intensity or plasma density increases or the laser frequency decreases, the adiabatic regime loses stability via a transition to chaos. New asymptotic states are attained when the adiabatic regime no longer exists. In these new states, the plasma is highly accelerated becoming rarefied, and the laser field tends to behave like a vacuum field(Rizzato et al), Phys. Rev. E accepted (1997)
Negative-mass Instability in Nonlinear Plasma Waves
2013
The negative-mass instability (NMI), previously found in ion traps, appears as a distinct regime of the sideband instability in nonlinear plasma waves with trapped particles. As the bounce frequency of these particles decreases with the bounce action, bunching can occur if the action distribution is inverted in trapping islands. In contrast to existing theories that also infer instabilities from the anharmonicity of bounce oscillations, spatial periodicity of the islands turns out to be unimportant, and the particle distribution can be unstable even if it is flat at the resonance. An analytical model is proposed which describes both single traps and periodic nonlinear waves and concisely generalizes the conventional description of the sideband instability in plasma waves. The theoretical results are supported by particle-in-cell simulations carried out for a regime accentuating the NMI effect.

Nonlinear regimes of one-dimensional parametric instabilities of long-wave plasma waves are considered for the cases when the average plasma field energy density is less (Zakharov's model) or greater (Silin's model) than the plasma thermal energy density. The hybrid models presented in this paper treat the electrons as a fluid by way of an equation for the high-frequency wave and treat the ions kinetically with a super-particle simulation. This makes possible consideration of non-resonant particles trapped by high-frequency oscillations and the influence of trajectory crossing on the development of the parametric instability. The evolution of ion energy distribution is studied. It is shown that after saturation of the instability, the ion kinetic energy density normalized to the initial field energy density is of the order of the ratio of linear growth rate to the plasma frequency, for the case when the initial field energy far exceeds the plasma thermal energy. In this case...
