Future work self and career adaptability in the prediction of proactive career behaviors.
This study examined the motivational resource of future work self salience and the additive effect of career adaptability dimensions in the prediction of career planning, proactive skill development, and proactive career networking in a sample of university students (N = 113). It was hypothesized that greater clarity of future work self would predict engagement in each of the proactive career behaviors and that specific dimensions of career adaptability would have an additive effect in predicting particular proactive career behavior in line with the theory of career construction. Results indicated that future work self predicted career planning and that career concern had an additive effect. Future work self also predicted proactive skill development and proactive career networking. However, career confidence and career curiosity mediated these relationships in the prediction of skill development and networking respectively. In sum, results suggest that future work self and career adaptability play an influential role in the engagement of proactive career behavior.
Enabling Career Success as an Emergent Process

A career is a person’s evolving sequence of work experiences over time. Although there are many definitions of career success, most of them construe it as the culmination of a person’s objective attainments (e.g., pay, promotions, and status) and feelings of personal satisfaction and accomplishment with his or her career to date. Such definitions may readily cue you to conceive of your career success as a cumulative outcome: something to be optimized, such that at the end of the day — whenever that occurs — you will be pleased with what you have accomplished and with your overall career. Career success can also be viewed as being more about the quality of the journey than the destination. This approach is analogous to focusing more on whether you are self-actualizing than on whether you have attained self-actualization. Conceiving of career success as an emergent process is in line with the notion of a career as an evolving sequence of work experiences over time. Viewing career success as an emergent process rather than a cumulative outcome brings to mind a rather different set of fundamental questions.

In the current dynamic and flexible work environment, traditional career models are constantly challenged by individuals’ self-concepts of career development. Previous studies have investigated the predictors of subjective career success, yet little is known about the impact of proactive career orientation on subjective career success. This study, grounded in the career construction theory, aims to examine the influence mechanism of proactive career orientation on subjective career success by analyzing questionnaire data from 296 employees. Empirical results indicate that proactive career orientation has a positive impact on subjective career success. The current study examined the mediating role of general self-efficacy in the relationship between university students' proactive career behavior and their proactive personality. The participants of the study consisted of 457 university students in Turkey. The Proactive Personality Scale-Short Form, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Career Engagement Scale were used as data collection tools. Analysis results of the study showed that general self-efficacy had a mediating role in the relationship between proactive career behavior and proactive personality. In addition, proactive career behavior was found to have significant and positive relationships with proactive personality and general self-efficacy. The study explored whether the positive links between individuals’ psychosocial career attributes and career adaptability resources empirically represent the characteristics associated with proactive career self-management behaviour. A cross-sectional convenience sample of Black and White ( N = 248) working adults participated in the study. The redundancy analysis of the canonical correlation analysis indicated positive links between the career attributes of behavioural adaptability, career directedness, self-esteem, self/other skills, social connectivity, and career purpose, and the four career adaptability resources of career concern, career control, career curiosity, and career confidence.
