Authority and Learning in the School of Pārthivapuraṃ

The question of authority in higher education in the context of precolonial South Asia is not easy to address. This has as much to do with the fragmentary and anecdotal nature of information that the sources contain as with the disheartening status of research itself. The study of education in precolonial India, especially for the times before the sixteenth century, continues to be in a state of hopeless infancy. The period from the age of the vēdas to the end of the first millennium CE has been examined at some length, even though there is much to be desired from this body of writings. From the time when Norendra Nath Mazumder and A. S. Altekar produced the early monographs on education, 1 there have been several rich and not-so-rich pieces of documentation, often produced with an enthusiasm that is more patronizing than scholarly. 2 Exceptions are not unknown, but they continue to be few, far between, and wanting in conceptual refinement. 3 An investigation of authority in higher education in the subcontinent's history must begin by acknowledging this constraint. The question also presents the historian with several other challenges. The first of these has to do with the definition of higher education. Hierarchies existed in centres of learning, and we hear of senior and junior students with different syllabi within the same institution, although such information is all too rare. But the extant sources before the age of colonialism do not distinguish between elementary, secondary and higher learning, or institutionally developed modalities for articulating them. Secondly, we known next to nothing about the functioning of educational institutions, the making of their curricula, forms of pedagogy, the nature or procedure of enrolment, and the class, caste and religious

As we know, India is not remarkable not only for its logical, classical and research oriented theoritical experiment in the field of educationbut also for its world wide popularity. As its oftenly said” A good psychology and psychological observation of teacher can introduce him a real guide, mentor, and a good companionfor his/her students. In India the concept of education actully strats from the grass-root of “ Teaching concept of a teacher” historically india is a country where the concept ofeducation which observs as the normal and abnormal, the ordinary and extraordinary, illusion and reality, resignation and desire rub shoulders to find a way to select a path of bright and esteemed world of “career”.
