Wireless Sensor Networks

Sensor networks consist of a set of sensor nodes, each equipped with one or more sensors, communication subsystems, storage and processing resources, and in some cases actuators. The sensors in a node observe phenomena such as thermal, optic, acoustic, seismic, and acceleration events, while the processing and other components analyze the raw data and formulate answers to specific user requests. Recent advances in technology have paved the way for the design and implementation of new generations of sensor network nodes, packaged in very small and inexpensive form factors with sophisticated computation and wireless communication abilities. Although still at infancy, these new classes of sensor networks, generally referred to as wireless sensor networks (WSN), show great promise and potential with applications ranging in areas that have already been addressed, to domains never before imagined. In this article we provide an overview of this new and exciting field and a brief discussion on the factors pushing the recent flurry of sensor network related research and commercial undertakings. We also provide overview discussions on architectural design characteristics of such networks including physical components, software layers, and higher level services. At each step, we highlight special characteristics of WSNs and discuss why existing approaches and results from wireless communication networks are not necessarily suitable in WSN domains. We conclude by briefly summarizing the state of the art and the future research directions.

Research Challenges in Wireless Sensor Network: A State of the Play

A wireless sensor network (WSN) has important applications such as remote environmental monitoring and target tracking. This has been enabled by the availability, particularly in recent years, of sensors that are smaller, cheaper, and intelligent. These sensors are equipped with wireless interfaces with which they can communicate with one another to form a network. The design of a WSN depends significantly on the application, and it must consider factors such as the environment, the application's design objectives, cost, hardware, and system constraints. The goal of survey is to present a comprehensive review of the recent literature in wireless sensor network. This paper reviews the major development and new research challenges in this area.

Latest Advancements and Future Patterns in Wireless Sensor Networks

2017

Wireless Sensor systems (WSNs) have turned out to be a standout amongst the most intriguing ranges of research in the previous couple of years. A WSN is made out of various remote sensor hubs which frame a sensor field and a sink. These vast quantities of hubs, having the capacities to detect their environment, perform constrained calculation and impart remotely frame the WSNs. Late advances in remote and electronic advances have empowered an extensive variety of uses of WSNs in military, activity reconnaissance, target following, environment checking, human services observing, et cetera. There are numerous new difficulties that have surfaced for the creators of WSNs, keeping in mind the end goal to meet the necessities of different applications like detected amounts, size of hubs, and hubs' independence. Accordingly, upgrades in the present advancements and better answers for these difficulties are require...

Applications using Wireless Sensor Networks: A survey

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) received enormous attention in recent years due to its phenomenal ability of implementation in various fields. WSNs consist of a large number of small sensor nodes. These nodes are very cheap in terms of cost. In military operations, there is always a threat of being attacked by enemies. So, the use of these cheap sensor nodes will help to reduce the loss. In this paper, we analyze the existing literature of using WSNs for military applications. We will discuss the available scenarios of using sensor nodes in the military uses. We aim to present a better deployment of sensor nodes for military purposes with the help of existing research work. We will try to identify different areas in which we can reduce the damage in case of militant's attack or enemy's outbreak using an intelligent deployment of nodes.

Wireless Sensor Networks: Applications and Challenges

2020

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) allow innovative applications and involve non-conventional models for the design of procedures owing to some limitations. Due to the necessity for low device complication and low consumption of energy, an appropriate equilibrium among communication and signal processing abilities should be instituted. This stimulates an enormous effort in research actions, standardisation procedure, as well as manufacturing investments on this aspect since the preceding years. Therefore, this chapter aims at presenting a summary of WSNs machineries, foremost applications and values, structures in WSNs project, and the developments drawn from some evidence and meta-data-based survey and assessments. Precisely, some applications, such as those based on ecological monitoring, and design approaches that emphasise a real implementation are discussed briefly. The trends and conceivable developments are outlined. Emphasis is given to “the Institute of Electrical and Electron...

Sensing the world: Challenges on WSNs

Automation, Quality and Testing, …, 2008

Wireless sensor network (WSNs) is a demanding multidisciplinary field that has been target of research in the last decade. The increasing demand for security and automated monitoring of things and places makes WSNs a promising technology although there are still many open research contributions needed to make this the standard of environmental sensing. The goal of this article is to identify the research challenges on WSNs by dividing them into functional groups, building on previous work. We followed a structured approach based on a simplified yet complete vision of a design space for WSNs. Moreover, this work aims to identify research gaps and investigation fields yet unexplored or hardly explored by researchers in order to plot paths for future research. Several challenges and research areas were identified, like Models for Sensor Networks, Benchmarking Methodologies, Distributed Processing, Interface WSNs and Network Reprogramming. Some of these challenges will become even clearer as increasingly WSNs become Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks (WSANs).
