Hibiscus rosa sinensis, a member of the Malvaceae family, is widely cultivated in the tropics as an ornamental plant. It is often planted as a fence or hedge plant, and has several forms of flowers with varying colours. It is also used in traditional medicine to induce abortion, ease menstrual cramps, assist in childbirth and relieve headache, fever and inflammation. In this study, we evaluated the antibacterial activity of H. rosa sinesis extract using a disc diffusion method. Crude petroleum ether extract, ethyl acetate extract and methanol extract from the leaves, stems and flowers of the plant were prepared using a cold extraction technique. These extracts were tested at concentrations ranging from 4 mg/disc to 0.017 mg/disc against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumonia. Infectious diseases are the second leading cause of death worldwide, killing almost 50,000 people every day. The worldwide emergence of multidrug resistant Escherichia coli and many other β-lactamase producers has become a major therapeutic problem. The development of bacterial resistance to presently available antibiotics has necessitated the search for new antibacterial agents. Many infectious diseases have been known to be treated with herbal remedies throughout the history of mankind. In rural and backward areas of India, several plants are commonly used as herbal medicine for the treatment of infectious diseases. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis commonly found plants were screened for potential antibacterial activity. The present study was conducted to evaluate the In-vitro and In-vivo evaluation of the antibacterial activity of ethanolic and aqueous leaf extract of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis in mice. In-vitro activity of ethanolic and aqueous leaf extract of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis at concentrations of 50, 100 and 200 mg/ml was tested against E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus using the agar well diffusion method and was compared with penicillin and gentamicin. Ethanolic leaf extracts showed higher inhibitory activity compared to aqueous extract at 50 and 100 mg/ml concentrations. MIC value of Hibiscus rosasinensis was found to be 2.5 and 5 mg respectively.
Bacteria are one of the major causes of urinary tract infection. To ease and prevent the wide spread of it, the researchers test a flowering plant, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (Gumamela red flower) to fight against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus saprophyticus. The researchers used in vitro testing of gumamela flower ethanolic extract to know its effectiveness against Staphylococcus epdermidis and Staphylococcus saprophyticus. It was tested at different concentrations to identify its capacity to fight against the said causative agent of urinary tract infection Concentration used was 80% and 40% ethanolic extracts. The researcher used the method minimum inhibitory concentration or the MIC as the lowest concentration of an antimicrobial drug that will inhibit the visible growth of microorganism after an overnight incubation in paper diffusion agar. Each ethanolic extract was diluted into 1:1, 1:10, 1:100 and 1:1000 using serial dilution to perform the MIC. Results revealed that gumamela extract is not potent as treatment for the two bacteria. There is no visible zone of inhibition in different concentrations.

Hibiscus rosa sinensis is member of the family Malvaceae and grows as an evergreen herbaceous plant in tropical regions. Hibiscus species are used in the treatment of various diseases. They have many pharmacological properties including antipyretic, antispasmodic, hypotensive, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and many more. Therefore, the present study was aimed at evaluating the antibacterial activity of methanolic extract from the leaves and flowers of H. rosa sinesis and identification of secondary metabolites in these extracts. The antibacterial activity of aquaeous and purified pigment extracts of Hibiscus rosa siensis in concentration (20,50,100,200,250 mg) were tested against reference strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Esherichia coli . The preliminary qualitative tests showed that the two extracts have flavonoids, carbohydrates and glycosides ,while alkaloids found only in the aquaeous extract. Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) showed the presence of anthocyanin pigment . Both extracts gave a clear activity against the tested strains with a minimal Inhibitory concentration reached to 20 mg/ml.

Solvent preparations of the different Hibiscus leaf have been mostly used in folk medicine for various purposes. In present study in this paper we have studied the antimicrobial activities of the leaf extract of Hibiscus rosa sinersis, H. aculeatus, H. sabdariffa, H. mutabillis and H. ficulness. We have evaluated the antimicrobial activity of the leaf extracts of all five Hibiscus sp. by agar well diffusion method. In the first screening all of the bacterial and fungal showed varying degrees of sensitivity to the Hibiscus leaf extract. Minimum antimicrobial activity was found by the petroleum either extracts. In among all four different solvent extract shows Ethyl acetate extract was found to be most favorable and suitable solvent for extraction and give maximum results in antimicrobial activities.

Background: Nature has been a source of medicinal agents for thousands of years and a striking number of modern drugs have been isolated from natural sources, many based on their use in traditional medicines or phytomedicines. As the plants have co-evolved with pathogens, they have also developed the chemical protection pathways against the organisms. Therefore, varieties of plants compounds are associated with antimicrobial and antibacterial activities. The hibiscus rosa sinensis plant extract have multiple organic component like flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, triterpenoids which are known to have antibacterial activity against E. coli , P. aeruginosa, Salmonella species. Phytotherapy is considered to be less toxic and minimal or no side effects in comparison to modern allopathic medicines. Therefore, in today's scenario there has been reappearance of interest developed in herbal medicine. Therefore, the study was planned to look for antibacterial activity of extract of petals and leaves of Hibiscus rosa sinensis against Material and Methods: Escherichia coli isolated from different clinical samples along with resistant antibiotics. All resistant isolates were tested along with Hibiscus Rosa Sinensis extract both leaves and petals extract with resistant antibiotics. Results: We found that among 35 (68.63%) resistant E. coli isolates to different antibiotics and 85.72% were from urine samples. Enhancement effect in zone size with many resistant antibiotics was seen individually with both extracts. Both extracts showed equal enhancement in zone size of cefotaxime (20.83%) and amikacin (25%). No effect of extracts was seen on levofloxacin.
Antioxidant and antibacterial activities of hibiscus
Antioxidant activity, antibacterial properties, color and FT-IR spectral analysis of flowers belonging to hibiscus and Cassia species were investigated. Radical scavenging activity of sample extracts were determined based on the percent inhibition of DPPH and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. Total phenolics were estimated based on the Folin–Ciocalteu method, while, vanillin–HCl and aluminum chloride methods were employed to estimate total tannins and flavo-noids in the sample extracts, respectively. To determine total flavonols and anthocyanin contents, spectrophotometric method was employed. For antibacterial activities, modified agar disk diffusion method was adopted. Color analysis was performed using a colorimeter, while functional groups of compounds were identified using a FTIR-spectrophotometer. Results showed both the flower extracts to encompass high amount of antioxidant compounds and exhibit significant antioxidant activities, which depended on extraction solvents. Ethanolic extracts of Cassia had high total pheno-lic, total flavonoid and total flavonol content, and showed highest activity for inhibition of DPPH, while aqueous extract of hibiscus had high tannin and anthocyanin contents, and showed high ferric reducing antioxidant power. With regard to antimicrobial activity, aqueous and ethanolic extracts of hibiscus inhibited the growth of food-borne pathogens such as Salmonella typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus, while in Cassia the growth of Bacillus cereus and Klebsiella pneumoniae was inhibited. Compared to Cassia, color analysis of hibiscus showed lower chroma and hue angle values. FTIR spectra of both flowers were comparable and showed the presence of polysaccharides, suberin and triglycerides. Our results indicate the potential of exploiting these two flowers as a source of natural food preservative or colorant, while developing novel functional foods. ª 2012 Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V. on behalf of King Saud University.

The purpose of the paper was to investigate the in-vitro antibacterial activity, preliminary phytochemical screening and cytotoxicity [3-(4,5-dimethyl thiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide-MTT assay] of methanol extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (calyxes). Phytochemical and in vitro anti-bacterial properties of Hibiscus sabdariffa L (Roselle) juice

The anti-bacterial properties of aqueous and ethanol extracts of the calyces of Hibiscus sabdariffa on five bacteria genera, namely, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysenteriae and Streptococcus mutans were evaluated using agar well and disc diffusion methods. Six bioactive compounds were identified from phytochemical analysis of the juice extract of H. sabdariffa. Analysis revealed the presence of the following in the water and ethanol extracts: saponins (1.46%), alkaloids (0.09%), tannins (0.19%), total phenols (0.07%), flavonoids (2.41%) and glycosides (0.13%). The results revealed that both water and ethanol extracts had significant anti-bacterial effects (P ≤ 0.05) against the tested pathogenic bacteria genera with the ethanol extract of Roselle having higher antibacterial effects against all the pathogens. S. aureus and E. coli were the most sensitive to Roselle juice extract (47.9 and 45. 8 mm zones of inhibition, respectively). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for the ethanol extract of H. sabdariffa was between 0.26 and 1.03 mg/ml. The results observed in this study contribute to scientific baseline data on the anti-bacterial activities of H. sabdariffa juice extract.
