Through the Lens of Invisi-Bi-Lity : Perceptions of Female Bisexuals on the Representation of Bisexuality and Bisexual Erasure in the Philippine Televised Media

SSRN Electronic Journal

Bisexuality has been an elusive concept of sexuality in the society – often being left out in the conversation, hence –bisexual erasure. A significant contributor of this and the proliferation of stigma on bisexual orientation is its media representation. In this paper, it unravels the perception of 10 Female bisexuals on the media representation of bisexuality in the Philippine televised media through an online semi-structured interview. With a miniscule percentage of bisexual representation, the paper seeks the participants’ insights under the scrutinization of Audience Reception Theory of Stuart Hall to understand the queer minorities stand on their media representation. The study has found that: (1) There is a big gap to fill in the bisexual representation in the Philippine media. Participants perceived bi-representation in the country as poor and are disappointed with how sexuality is represented. Its minimal and negative exposure leads to more significant issues such as discrimination and bi-erasure. (2) Bisexual participants as an audience perceived that bi Erasure exists in the Philippine media. It is neglected and not acknowledged enough to feel that they, as queer minorities, are validated and appreciated by the community. And (3) participants attest that the media representation of bisexuality - how it is presented, showcased, and erased to its audience contributes to bisexual discrimination. The shallowness, focused on negative connotations and invalidation, are prime reasons for discriminative action toward the queer minority. Keywords:

Beyond Badinger Z: Heteronormativity in Philippine Media

This paper seeks to explore the concept of heteronormativity, which has been defined as the daily and systematic rearticulations and affirmations of heterosexism and the privileging of heterosexual practices and identifications (Mulkey, 2010) and how it may or may not affect how Philippine television shows and film portray Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transexuals (LGBT) characters. The theory utilized is George Gerbner’s Cultivation Theory is used in an underlying claim that media has an impact over the attitudes of individuals that is cumulative and significant. Consequently, portrayals made in popular culture influence people’s mindset over a particular agenda, and the lack of or inaccurate representations made affect not only the mass media consumer’s perception, but also their acceptance of particular identities, in this case, the LGBT.
