The Technology-Production Base of the Firm: Creating Sustainable Strategic Competitive Advantage (original) (raw)
In last decades, the theory of resources had been established as an important part of discussion on the competitive operations of the firms. Its contribution for the strategic approach of creation of firms competitive advantage won recognition. However, the theory of resources was not able to put forward clear and applicable tools, and consequently, useful in formulating the firms strategy. Thus, a central question has been leaved unanswered: Finally, which are those from the resources that contribute in the configuration of the strategy and the competitive ability of the firms? In this paper it is not proposed an additional variant in the already existing views of the theory of resources; but based on these approaches, we try to determine the critical factors in the firm, that transform individual resources of tactical importance in strategic advantage in order to sustain the firms competitive ability and obtain their viability. This process occurs within a technology-people structure that composes what we name “technology-production base” of the firms.

The emergence of resource-based view of the firm in strategic management during 1980s has become a dominant framework and it shifts our attention from the industry to the firm level as a prime determinant of firms' profitability. The theory is still in the evolving phase and its epistemology is getting richer day-by-day. The paper traces the roots of resource-based view, elucidates its economic logic and presents the critics' views. In addition, the theory's empirical assessment is presented and the methodological concerns of the research are discussed. Finally, its managerial significance is elaborated and a conclusion is drawn with regard to its contribution in the field of strategic management.
New directions of development of resource-based view in creating a competitive advantage
2013
The resource-based view which supports endogenous perspective in strategic management has become the focus of interest among scholars. However, criticism directed at the resource-based theory provides basis for separation of the new mainstreams: dynamic capability and relational resources. The aim of the paper is to review the resource-based approach to strategic management and to develop new directions for this approach. Depending on the approach, a competitive advantage in a firm is attained through resources (resource-based view, RBV) or through adjustment to the environment (positioning view). Evolution of the resource-based concept allowed authors to attempt to build a conceptual model that uses exogenous and endogenous orientation of the strategic management in formation of competitive advantage

Aim of the study is to investigate the diversities of competitive advantage concepts and how those companies use their sources to provide sustainability and competitive advantage. Competitive advantage; in the information age, intends to aim at inclining to skills and abilities not easily imitated by competitors in order to capture competitive advantage. A semi-structured interview is conducted with three companies. This research allows the classification of resources by industry profile and can demonstrate differences in that profile. The findings show that intangible resources gains prominence as a competitive advantage and have more impact on performance in many companies as mentioned in other studies. A construction company, a food company and an automotive company are examined. The competitive environment pushes the companies to be innovative and to show corporate image in ways like social responsibility, where the know-how and intellectual property is one of the most important way for sustainability. Know-how and experience create deliver tangible results. The learning opportunities engage employees and reinforce company culture, where the companies operate in an environment where new technologies replace many core functions.
Technology Strategy Formation from a Resource-Based View
2005
The business environment of today is characterized by ever-increasing turbulence. A continuous rise of technological opportunities, entrant of new competitors and new requests by customers create a demand for strategies aimed at continuously renewing sources of competitive advantage. The winning formula for competitive advantage is speed, surprise and technology development. Technology is increasingly considered as the main contributor to strategy creation. The current trend in strategy research is towards the "black-box of the corporation", often carried out with the help of a resource-based view.
Firm Resources and Sustained Competitive Advantage
Understanding sources of sustained competitive advantage has be come a major area of research in strategic management. Building on the assumptions that strategic resources are heterogeneously distrib uted across firms and that these differences are stable over time, this ar ticle examines the link between firm resources and sustained competi tive advantage. Four empirical indicators of the potential of firm resources to generate sustained competitive advantage-value, rare ness, imitability, and substitutability-are discussed. The model is ap plied by analyzing the potential ofseveral firm resources for generating sustained competitive advantages. The article concludes by examining implications of this firm resource model of sustained competitive ad vantage for other business disciplines.

The resource-based view can be positioned relative to at least three theoretical traditions: SCPbased theories of industry determinants of firm performance, neo-classical microeconomics, and evolutionary economics. In the 1991 article, only the first of these ways of positioning the resourcebased view is explored. This article briefly discusses some of the implications of positioning the resource-based view relative to these other two literatures; it also discusses some of the empirical implications of each of these different resource-based theories.

Sharing strategical resources in critical junctures for the technology based firms
The present work analyses the interaction between firms as a strategical resources obtaining strategy in technology based firms (tbF). It is taken as reference the model of Vhora et al. (2004), where the tbF for achieving the optimal development must success different junctures or critical transitions, also those junctures exist in the different phases of the tbF performance. The strategic interactions are one of the mechanisms that allow the success of the different junctures, allowing the access to strategical resources that are valuable for the tbF. These interactions can reduce the cost and the risk in the development of the resources. But this mechanism supposes the risk of imitation given that it is related with the base of strategical resources in which the tbF support the competitive advantage of the firm. In this spirit sharing strategical resources could be seen itself as an anomaly in the theory of the resources based view (rbv) of the firm, which is studied in this work. Also is established an ex –ante profile of strategical resources needed for the tbF in the different phases of the development of the firm. The game theory is used to show these conditions.
Selected Elements of Resource Theory in the Context of Enterprise Competitiveness
International Journal of New Economics and Social Sciences
In this article an attempt has been made to characterize selected elements influencing the competitiveness of the company. Considerations were based on enterprise resource theory and limited to chosen factors. As numerous studies show, the importance of knowledge, human resources and innovation are key determinants of both the development and competitiveness of today's companies.

Article history: Technology-based companies are always looking for factors that lead to improvement of their financial performance. For a long time, based on resource-based theory, the only available resources of a firm provided its financial performance and its competitive power and then working with other companies was known as an important factor in improving financial performance. But surely there are other unknown factors such as dynamic capabilities in this context that play the role of connector loop between firm performance and its financial resources. Therefore, this paper identifies factors affecting a technology-based firm's financial performance and competitiveness and the relationship between them. For this purpose 5 variables and main components displayed in conceptual model were detected and finally seven hypotheses were formulated. For field data collection, a questionnaire of 24 questions was designed and distributed among the population that was a number of ste...
