Emotional Intelligence: Pathway to Improved Leadership Capacities in Nigeria

The importance of emotional intelligence to employees" career development and success has been stressed in business papers. The concept is a widely used managerial tool that cuts across all industries in advanced societies. The extent of its appreciation and utilization in Nigeria is still in doubt in terms of academic research and individual and organizational applications. The orchestrated benefits of emotional intelligence are crucial to employee"s career and are within the domains of employee development and performance which are relevant for nation building. There is also a dearth of knowledge as to the effect of emotional intelligence on leadership type and impact in Nigeria. This paper seeks to investigate relevant literature on the subject with reference to Nigeria so as to ascertain the level of applicability of the concept and make appropriate recommendations that will help leadership growth through the adoption of emotional intelligence principles in leadership training and placement. The paper also discussed the evolution of emotional intelligence, the taxonomy of emotional intelligence, empirical evidence of the effect of emotional intelligence on performance and measurement of emotional intelligence.

Leaders’ emotional intelligence and employees’ performance: A case in Nigeria’s public healthcare sector

Undoubtedly, multiple competencies are essential for effective leadership and identifying specific competencies that will foster employees’ performance, is a veritable venture. This study explores the impact of leaders’ emotional intelligence on employees’ performance within Nigeria’s public healthcare sector and also provides perspective on the contextual underpinnings. It adopts the survey method and randomly samples leaders and employees within the sector. Data analyses using the t-test and hierarchical regression analytical tool, reveals a significant correlation between the emotional intelligence of leaders and the performance of employees. The study finds that the task of leadership, coupled with the multiple challenges within Nigeria’s public healthcare sector, requires a reasonable measure of emotional intelligence in order to facilitate employees’ performance.

This study examined the effect of emotional intelligence on employees' performance with the aim of understanding the influence of emotional intelligence of employee on his or her performance in organization. The variables studied were emotional intelligence on organizational employee performance. Six organizations from mixed industries in operation in Maiduguri Borno State were studied. Questionnaires were administered on the 121 sample which was determined purposely. A Chi-Square (X 2) was used to test the hypotheses formulated. It was found out that the use of emotional intelligence was a more potent drive to any accomplishment than monetary rewards. It also concludes that the use of emotional intelligence, more than anything else, put more drive into any accomplishment including corporate performance than any monetary reward or status. The study recommends among others that managers should shift attention to, and be more concerned with employing emotional intelligence as a catalyst to drivers of performance rather than the measure of performance. Poor emotional intelligence creates huge complications in the workplace. The consequences include diminished employee’s productivity and deteriorating leadership performance. Guided by the principles of emotional intelligence theory, this correlational study investigated the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and leadership performance at four selected Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies in Lagos State. The study relied on primary data gathered using the Work Profile EI Questionnaire to measure emotional intelligence, while leadership performance scale questionnaire was used to evaluate leadership performance. Managers’ Emotional Intelligence Skills and Organisational Performance in Selected Telecommunication Companies in Lagos State, Nigeria

This study examines emotional intelligence skills and organisational performance in the Nigerian telecommunication sector. To achieve the objective of the study, survey research design was used for data collection. The study relied heavily on quantitative method by using a structured questionnaire which was administered on the employees of three selected telecommunication companies, MTN Nigeria, Airtel and Globacom at their Head offices respectively. The study adopted stratified sampling technique to administer Five hundred and thirty-three (533) questionnaires with three hundred and forty-two (342) (i.e. 64 percent) valid responses. MANAGERIAL EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND WORKERS' PRODUCTIVITY: THE NIGERIAN EXPERIENCE

The study examines managerial emotional intelligence and workers' productivity in hotel operations in Nigeria. The research adopts cross-sectional survey design with a sample of 183 administrative and lower level workers obtained from the 173 registered hotels in Bayelsa State Ministry of Tourism Development. The stratified random sampling technique was utilized. Spearman's Ranked Order Correlation Statistical tool was used to test the hypotheses. The findings revealed that Managerial self-regulation and motivation gave rise to workers' efficiency and effectiveness in hotel operations in Nigeria. Based on the findings, we concluded that workers and managerial staff in hotel operations be given motivational incentives (monetary and non-monetary) to boost their morale at workplaces. The study therefore recommends that in checkmating deviations of employees' behaviours at work, hotels' management should endeavour to treat all workers the same not minding sex, race or region and this should be done with courtesy and fairness as it has significant impact on hotels' productivity. Hotels leadership should practice and encourage participatory culture among their workforce as this has potential impact on productivity.

Emotional Intelligence and Organizational Performance in Commercial Banks in Uyo Metropolis, Akwa Ibom State

The study was designed to examine the relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Organizational Performance in commercial banks in Uyo Metropolis of Akwa Ibom State. A cross-sectional survey was adopted for the study and a sample of 162 respondents was drawn from the population of 271 using Taro Yamane's scientific sampling technique. For the objectives of the study to be achieved, two hypotheses were formulated and tested. The study utilized structured questionnaire and interview as the major instruments for data collection. 162 questionnaires were distributed and 135 were returned. Data were collected and analyzed using simple percentage and ordinal logistic regression. Results showed that there is a significant and positive relationship between variables of emotional intelligence such as self-control, self-management and, and employee performance in commercial banks in Uyo Metropolis of Akwa Ibom State. It was recommended that, self-control should be sustained by bank employees by continually developing the capacity to alter their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to align them with organizational goals to enhance performance as well as developing the capacity to manage emotions as one of the major determinants of harmonious relationship among members in an organization.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AS A FACTOR IN EMPLOYEES' PERFORMANCE IN AN ORGANIZATION; A CASE STUDY OF AERO CONTRACTOR (NIGERIA

The concept of emotional intelligence appears to be more than just a management buzzword or superficial palaver, rather it is seen by Scholars as a valid and well supported predictor and driver of superior organizational performance. In other to carry out this research, objectives were set and hypotheses set. Questionnaire was used as the main instrument of data collection, which was analyzed with non parametric statistical tool of Chi Square. It was discovered that organizations exist for a variety of purposes but in this access to efficient and affordable air transport services is indispensable to economic growth and development. Also it was discovered that personal emotional intelligence are key consideration for recruitment and placement of staff in Aero Contractor of Nigeria Plc. It was discovered that emotional intelligence by itself will not guarantee higher profits or better performance but the way people work together, coupled with technical expertise and the ability to form a strong network can be improved to help teams navigate past the inevitable bottlenecks in an organization. It therefore recommended that Human Resources Development practitioners acknowledge that Emotional Intelligent is not something that should be developed in isolation but as part of a cohesive package of both cognitive and emotional intelligence enhancement.

Emotional Intelligence: Does Leadership Style Matter? Employees Perception in Ghana's Banking Sector

The purpose of this study was to determine whether employees in Ghana's banking sector perceive their leaders to be emotionally intelligent based on their style of leadership. The study was cross-sectional in nature and made use of structured questionnaires to collect quantitative data. Out of 300 questionnaires administered, 234 were returned (comprising of 115 males and 119 females). The findings of the study revealed that a positive relationship exists between transformational leadership and emotional intelligence (EI) whereas a negative relationship was found between transactional leadership and EI of leaders. The study also noted that transformational leaders are more emotionally intelligent; thus, it is recommended that EI an attribute associated with leader effectiveness be made part of leadership development in organizations.
