What Makes Greek Parents and Teachers Determine Safe Internet Use for Students in Elementary Schools

Recognizing that schools have become the universal location where young people are learning about the Internet in a safe and responsible manner and are also an important conduit of information for parents- many of whom are not as technically literate as their children, this research investigates: a) teachers' and parents’ education about the safe and responsible use of the Internet by elementary students, b) the differences in parents’ and teachers’ attitudes towards the students’ use of the Internet in the family home and at school and, c) the kind of issues or concerns that emerge between parents and teachers as an acknowledgment of the web based technologies importance in the students’ day-to-day social and educational activities. Interviews by 230 teachers and 1289 parents in 36 elementary schools in urban and rural provinces of Crete demonstrate that technologically sophisticated parents expressed more concern over their children’s negative consequences of the Internet use and tended to provide more guidance and influence to which children may be more responsive compared to teachers’ advice or assistance with technological efficacy. The implications of the findings are discussed.
Teacher Education and Internet Safety
In this paper I explore the current state of internet safety with regard to teacher education, curriculum, and educator, parental and student perceptions. I discuss internet security and ethics in an educational and social networking context. Consideration is given to the impact of social technologies on adolescents, the reality of threats, the roles of educators, parents and peers in policing and influencing behaviors, and the impact of technology policies. The conclusion is drawn that as policy and educational methods change slowly, research shows that parents and educators can most immediately and effectively affect online adolescent behaviors.

Evaluating a Greek National Action on Parents’ Training on ICT and Internet Safety

The Greek national action "Goneis.gr" educates and trains the parents of highschool children on the issue of safer internet, as well as on the use of ICT. Having trained more than 28.300 parents, the initiative aims at providing about 45.000 parents with the same training. Examining the Beneficiaries' degree of satisfaction by the initiative, we conducted a survey in a sample of Beneficiaries that completed the training. This paper introduces the initiative and presents the results of the survey in order to conclude to specific decisions about the future implementation of the initiative which is still running.

There has been an increase in the vulnerability in Internet security, and the unconscious usage of the Internet is a very important issue throughout the world as it is in Cyprus today. The best way to solve such an issue would be to make people aware of this situation. Based on this idea, teachers should firstly be trained to use the Internet in a safe and conscious manner so to be able to aid their students and the student's parents in the correct and safe usage of the Internet. The aim of this study is to determine teachers' self-efficacy and perceptions in safer use of the Internet so to be able to identify and develop a multidimensional tool, which is both valid and reliable, and can be therefore used in other scientific studies as well. Through a confirmatory factor analysis, the "Scale for the Self-Efficacy and Perceptions in the Safe Use of the Internet for Teachers" was validated in four dimensions: "Security in Social Networking Sites," "Malicious Software," "Web Security & Social Engineering" and "Computer Security," The scale developed has the characteristics of being the first of its kind in a developing country such as Cyprus. According to the results of the study, the scale in terms of validity and reliability was found to be appropriate in all aspects of the necessary criteria. As a result, the developed scale could help or be used by teachers, in Cyprus and in other countries, to be able to access the Internet safely and aid them in other scientific areas of study in determining teachers' self-efficacy.
DIGITAL LITERACY OF PRIMARY EDUCATION TEACHERS IN THE AREA OF DIGITAL SAFETY

Digital Literacy (DL) is one of the key competencies modern teachers should have. Regardless of the stage of education, they should be skilled in using modern ICT solutions. Fluent use of digital media is one of the DL components-as much important as the ability to understand and anticipate online threats. DL of teachers determines not only their own safety but also the safety of children in elementary education. The paper sets out to address the following question: What is the level of digital literacy regarding e-threats among primary school teachers? The answer was given based on a competence tests and a diagnostic survey results. The research was conducted among 222 teachers in Poland and was commissioned by the Ministry of National Education (project executor: Cities on the Internet Association Tarnów and Navigo Wroclaw). It is the first research based on a real measurement of DL in the following areas: ergonomics of using ICT, reliable evaluation of online information, influence of advertising on children, relationships with other people through the Internet, setting logins and passwords, and malware protection. The conclusion are surprising: teachers have insufficient knowledge regarding protection of children against e-communication threats but their competencies regarding malware protection are relatively high. Particular support in strengthening DL should be provided to trainees, that is, teacher who begin their professional career.

Online risks obstructing safe internet access for students Fotis Lazarinis
Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to provide an overall insight into the factors which undermine safe internet access for students. Safer internet access for students is an issue raised during recent years as the web becomes increasingly more accessible to children. However, recent research studies and initiatives demonstrated a number of potential online risks for students. To be able to protect children from potentially hazardous content it is first necessary to have a good understanding of the existing online threats. Design/methodology/approach -Initially, prior works on online safety problems for children are reviewed and a list of online risks is assembled based on the previous studies and on information gathered from web sites dedicated to safer internet access. Then, based on this listing, an access log of unsupervised internet access of high school students is analyzed to understand which of these risks can be identified. Findings -The review of previous works on the topic of safer internet access produces a list of diverse problems for unsupervised internet access for children. The results of the log files evaluation show that several of the identified online risks existed in the students' visited sites and that the students are able to bypass the applied restrictions to visit their preferred sites. Originality/value -The list of online risks can be used by researchers, teachers, parents, educational technologists, web designers, school administrators and libraries to obtain a clearer view of the internet safety issues. Further, this list could be used for directing future research projects on the social consequences of internet usage for children.
