Crack interaction in an infinite elastic strip
International Journal of Engineering Science, 1980
The problem considers an arbitrary number of colinear and unequal size Griffith cracks opened by a non-uniform internal pressure in an infinite elastic strip. The cracks are located halfway between and parallel to the surfaces of the 2-dimensional medium. By appropriate integral transformations the mixed boundary value problem is reduced to singular integral equations. The stress intensity factors, crack openings and crack energies are then determined for many different cases.
Elastic crack-tip stress field in a semi-strip
In this article the plain elasticity problem for a semi-strip with a transverse crack is investigated in different cases of boundary conditions at the semi-strip's end. Unlike many works dedicated to this subject, the fixed singularities in the singular integral equation's kernel are considered. The integral transformations' method is applied by a generalized scheme to reduce the initial problem to a one-dimensional problem. The one-dimensional problem is formulated as a vector boundary value problem which is solved with the help of matrix differential calculations and Green's matrix apparatus. The problem is reduced to solve the system of three singular integral equations. Depending on the conditions given on the short edge of the semi-strip, the obtained singular integral equation can have one or two fixed singularities. A special method is applied to solve this equation in regard to the singularities existence. Hence, the system of the singular integral equations (SSIE) is solved with the help of the generalized method. The stress intensity factors (SIF) are investigated for different lengths of crack. The novelty of this work is the application of a new approach allowing the consideration of fixed singularities in the problem of a transverse crack in the elastic semi-strip. The comparison of the accuracy of numerical results during the use of different approaches to solve the SSIE is calculated.
Integral equations for crack systems in a slightly heterogeneous elastic medium
WIT Transactions on Modelling and Simulation, 2010
The paper deals with derivation of a system of singular integral equations for slightly heterogeneous media. The system is derived in terms of complex potentials by introducing a small parameter by the perturbation method. The resulting system of integral equations is of the Cauchy type with the correction terms that address inhomogeneity of the media, they are presented in the form somewhat similar to the problem with body forces. Therefore the numerical methods developed for the homogeneous crack problems can directly be applied for the further numerical analysis.
Crack-Type Boundary Value Problems of Electro-Elasticity
Operator Theoretical Methods and Applications to Mathematical Physics, 2004
Dirichlet, Neumann and mixed crack-type boundary value problems of statics are considered in three-dimensional bounded domains filled with a homogeneous anisotropic electro-elastic medium. Applying the method of the potential theory and the theory of pseudodifferential equations, we prove the existence and uniqueness theorems in Besov and Bessel potential spaces, and derive full asymptotic expansion of solutions near the crack edge.
Moving semi-infinite mode-III crack inside the semi-infinite elastic media
Journal of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics
The problem of a semi-infinite moving mode-III crack inside a semi-infinite isotropic half-space is considered. The crack is located between a semi-infinite elastic medium and a layer whose distance from the surface to crack depth is h. Initially, Fourier transformation and inverse Fourier transformation are applied to transfer the governing boundary value problem to the well-known Wiener-Hopf equation. The purpose of this problem is to obtain the analytical solution of Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) and Crack Opening Displacement (COD) at the neighbourhood of the crack tip. In numerical Section, I have discussed the variation of parameters (crack velocity, layer distance h from the surface to crack depth) to show the effect of these parametric values on the graphs of SIF and COD where the material properties (density, shear modulus) were fixed.
On the elastoplastic crack problem at finite strain
Zeitschrift für angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 1991
The aim of this paper is to generalize the mathematical formulation of the crack problem suggested in [1]-[4] to the quasistatics of an elastoplastic cracked body at finite strain. Two essential features of the finite strain elastoplasticity concern the total energy principle and the concept of internal state variables satisfying non-holonomical constraints [4], [5]. The boundary value problem for elastoplastic cracked body at finite strain is derived from the variational inequality. The condition of crack propagation is associated with the asymptotically path-independent J-integrals. The algorithm of J-integral calculation is proposed.
Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, 1981
The problem of computing the stress intensity factor for a crack in an inhomogeneous elastic body of finite cross-section, under Mode III deformation, is considered. With an appropriate change of dependent variable the crack problem is transformed to a mixed boundary value problem, including third type boundary conditions, to which the Boundary Integral Equation method can be applied. Various methods for treating the crack-tip singularity are used, and from the computed solution the stress intensity factor is calculated using direct methods and FI-and M-invariant integrals. The results, for varying crack length, are displayed graphically and demonstrate the effect of the elastic inhomogeneity.
