Application of Multidisciplinary Design Optimization on Advanced Configuration Aircraft

An optimization strategy is constructed to solve the aerodynamic and structural optimization problems in the conceptual design of double-swept flying wing aircraft. Aircraft preliminary aerodynamic and structural design optimization is typically based on the application of a deterministic approach of optimizing aerodynamic performance and structural weight. In aerodynamic optimization, the objective is to minimize induced drag coefficient, and the structural optimization aims to find the minimization of the structural weight. In order to deal with the multiple objective optimization problems, an optimization strategy based on collaborative optimization is adopted. Based on the optimization strategy, the optimization process is divided into system level optimization and subsystem level optimization. The system level optimization aims to obtain the optimized design which meets the constraints of all disciplines. In subsystem optimization, the optimization process for different disciplines can be executed simultaneously to search for the consistent schemes. A double-swept configuration of flying wing aircraft is optimized through the suggested optimization strategy, and the optimization results demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.
ENHANCING AIRCRAFT CONCEPTUAL DESIGN USING MULTIDISCIPLINARY OPTIMIZATION
Research into the improvement of the Aircraft Conceptual Design process by the application of Multidisciplinary Optimization (MDO) is presented. Aircraft conceptual design analysis codes were incorporated into a variety of optimization methods including Orthogonal Steepest Descent (full-factorial stepping search), Monte Carlo, a mutationbased Evolutionary Algorithm, and three variants of the Genetic Algorithm with numerous options. These were compared in the optimization of four notional aircraft concepts, namely an advanced multirole export fighter, a commercial airliner, a flyingwing UAV, and a general aviation twin of novel asymmetric configuration. To better stress the methods, the commercial airliner design was deliberately modified for certain case runs to reflect a very poor initial choice of design parameters including wing loading, sweep, and aspect ratio.
Aircraft design optimization with multidisciplinary performance criteria

By minimizing a cost function consisting of both conventional performance criteria and a measure of aircraft handling qualities, a design with maximum performance for a specified level of handling can be achieved. Handling qualities are measured using a quadratic cost function similar to that used in the design of optimal feedback control systems. This function is proportional to the difference between the unforced response of the aircraft and a "model" case with dynamics that are considered acceptable. The variables to be optimized may include both aircraft design parameters (e.g. span, tail area, skin thickness) and control system feedback gains. The design variables are determined by an unconstrained numerical optimization procedure, using penalty functions to enforce both explicit and implicit constraints. The method is most useful in the simultaneous design of airframe and flight control systems to achieve improved handling, and for cases in which the handling and performance are highly coupled by the design parameters. In certain cases results obtained by this simultaneous design procedure are substantially better than those obtained by I the usual sequential design methods. The presence of multidisciplinary performance criteria and constraints complicates the process of aircraft design and optimization. This paper addresses some of the problems that arise as performance measures from very different fields are compared and tradeoffs are made. The work focuses on the interaction between structural weight, aerodynamic performance, and handling qualities. A method for dealing with such design problems is described and several example cases are considered I ~ Three example design problems using this methodology are discussed: tail sizing for minimum trimmed drag with longitudinal handling qualities constraints; wing weight minimization with aeroelastic constraints; and oblique-wing aerodynamic design for dynamic mode decoupling.
A coupled aero-structural optimization method for complete aircraft configurations

1 Abstract This paper presents a new framework for the coupled optimization of aero-structural systems. The framework permits the use of high-fidelity modeling of both the aerodynamics and the structures and represents our first step in an effort towards the development of a high-fidelity multidisciplinary optimization capability.
Through the presentation of three recent and ongoing research works, this paper illustrates different approaches to shape optimisation of aircraft components requiring both aerodynamic and structural disciplines to be taken into account. Pragmatic solutions that allow applying aerodynamic optimisation techniques and tools into a multidisciplinary context have been chosen. Actual applications of "aerodynamic-centric" multidisciplinary optimisations of two aero-structural systems presenting weak coupling between the two disciplines are described. An extension of the aerodynamic adjoint-based optimisation technique enabling the optimisation of aeroelastic systems with strong coupling is also introduced. This first application of MDO deals with the aerodynamic and structural optimisation of the powerplant integration under the wing of a transonic transport aircraft. Indeed, the larger size of modern aircraft engines with high bypass ratio leads to increasing difficulties regarding engine integration under the wing [11] [12]: on the aerodynamic side the features of the transonic flow on the whole wing are modified by the propulsion system, causing drag penalties; on the structure side the large forces to sustain lead to heavy mechanical parts. From experience, the consequences of drag and mass penalties on the aircraft operating costs are of the same order of magnitude. It advocates for an MDO approach so that properly accounts for both penalties and compromise between them. In this work, carried out within the European project VIVACE, the loosely coupled character of the problem allows us to use a hierarchical optimisation approach.
Genetic Optimization Applied in Conceptual and Preliminary Aircraft Design
This work describes the development of a Multidisciplinary Optimization Framework for the conceptual design and optimization of a business aircraft, through the use of genetic algorithms, in-house algorithms for Weight Estimation, Performance and Mission Analysis, and commercial and open-source softwares for evaluation of important characteristics of each aircraft, such as Aerodynamics, Propulsion and Static and Dynamic Stability Derivatives. The variables being optimizated are related to airfoil, wing planform, control surfaces planform, fuselage geometry and motorization. The framework is capable of optimizating many aircraft parameters, performing tasks such as drag reduction, lift improvement, weight reduction, mission optimization and cost reduction.
High-Fidelity Aerostructural Design Optimization of a Supersonic Business Jet

This paper focuses on the demonstration of an integrated aerostructural method for the design of aerospace vehicles. Both aerodynamics and structures are represented using high-fidelity models such as the Euler equations for the aerodynamics and a detailed finite element model for the primary structure. The aerodynamic outer-mold line and a structure of fixed topology are parameterized using a large number of design variables. The aerostructural sensitivities of aerodynamic and structural cost functions with respect to both outer-mold line shape and structural variables are computed using an accurate and efficient coupled-adjoint procedure. Kreisselmeier-Steinhauser functions are used to reduce the number of structural constraints in the problem. Results of the aerodynamic shape and structural optimization of a natural laminar-flow supersonic business jet are presented together with an assessment of the accuracy of the sensitivity information obtained using the coupled-adjoint procedure.
Aero-Structural Optimization of the NASA Common Research Model

A combined aerodynamic and structural, gradient-based optimization has been performed on the NASA/Boeing Common Research Model civil transport aircraft configuration. The computation of aerodynamic performance parameters includes a Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes CFD solver, coupling to a linear static structural analysis using the finite element method to take into account aero-elastic effects. Aerodynamic performance gradients are computed using the adjoint approach. Within each optimization iteration, the wing's structure is sized via a gradient-based algorithm and an updated structure model is forwarded for the performance analysis. In this pilot study wing profile shape is optimized in order to study engine installation effects. This setting was able to improve the aerodynamic performance by 4%
This paper describes a preliminary aircraft design procedure in a multidisciplinary context for new aircraft configurations. On top of the aero-elastic and structural optimizations using light CFD-CSM models, the Overall Aircraft Design (OAD) optimization has been adopted in order to take into account Direct Operative Cost (DOC) reduction. Top level variables that directly impact both aerodynamics and structure have been optimized in the above level, reducing the amount of information the previous disciplines have to exchange. In fact, this paper introduces a new approach different from the classical aero-structural fully coupled system optimization. Benefits and drawback of the new methodology are underlined.
