Multipliers are key components of many high performance systems such as microprocessors, digital signal processors, etc. Optimizing the speed and area of the multiplier is major design issue which is usually conflicting constraint so that improving speed results mostly in bigger areas. A VHDL designed architecture based on booth multiplication algorithm is proposed which not only optimize speed but also efficient on energy use.
Design and Comparison of High Speed Radix-8 and Radix-16 Booth's Multipliers
Multiplier is one of the hardware block which generally occupies a significant chip area and is required to be minimized which will be fruitful to number of applications in which multiplier blocks constitute an important unit such as digital signal processing (DSP) systems or computational techniques. Battery operated systems require low power devices to be implemented which can be minimized if the hardware required for the device is reduced logically. This paper focuses the DSP applications in which multiplier is significantly used and proposes a technique that helps in reducing the hardware as well as delay leading to the rise in performance of the system thus helping in increasing the operation frequency by a significant value. A 16-bit multiplier has been designed using a radix-8 and radix-16 Booth's multiplication that reduces number of partial products.

IRJET- A LOW POWER HIGH PERFORMANCE APPROXIMATE 16-BIT MULTIPLIER DESIGN
IRJET, 2020
Multiplication is a key fundamental function for many error-tolerant applications. Approximate multiplication is considered to be an efficient technique for trading off energy against performance and accuracy. This paper proposes an accuracy-controllable multiplier whose final product is generated by a carry-maskable adder. The proposed scheme can dynamically select the length of the carry propagation to satisfy the accuracy requirements flexibly. The partial product tree of the multiplier is approximated by the proposed tree compressor. An 8 × 8 multiplier design is implemented by employing the carry-maskable adder and the compressor. Compared with a conventional Wallace tree multiplier, the proposed multiplier reduced power consumption by between 47.3% and 56.2% and critical path delay by between 29.9% and 60.5%, depending on the required accuracy. Its silicon area was also 44.6% smaller. In addition, results from an image processing application demonstrate that the quality of the processed images can be controlled by the proposed multiplier design.
Design and Analysis of a Low Power Binary Counter-based Approximate Multiplier Architecture
International Journal of Innovative Technology and Exploring Engineering, 2019
Multiplication has become the fundamental arithmetic operation in modern electronic world. Many researches in Signal processing and image processing applications are looking for energy efficient architectures. These applications exhibit error tolerance thus laying foundation for approximation techniques. The proposed work utilizes a new binary counter for partial product accumulation in a segmentation based approximate multiplication technique. The fundamental building block of the counter is a 3-bit stack circuit, which combines each of “Logic 1” bits collectively, after which a stacking process is done to convert two 3-bit modules into a 6-bit stack module. The counter circuit is obtained by converting the bit stacks to binary counts, without any XOR gates on the critical line of operation. This leads to design of binary counters with effective yield of power and delay. Moreover, applying these counters for partial product accumulation in the approximate multipliers found to be mo...
Design of Approximate Radix-4 Booth Multipliers for Error-Tolerant Computing
IEEE Transactions on Computers, 2017
Approximate computing is an attractive design methodology to achieve low power, high performance (low delay) and reduced circuit complexity by relaxing the requirement of accuracy. In this paper, approximate Booth multipliers are designed based on approximate radix-4 modified Booth encoding (MBE) algorithms and a regular partial product array that employs an approximate Wallace tree. Two approximate Booth encoders are proposed and analyzed for error-tolerant computing. The error characteristics are analyzed with respect to the so-called approximation factor that is related to the inexact bit width of the Booth multipliers. Simulation results at 45 nm feature size in CMOS for delay, area and power consumption are also provided. The results show that the proposed 16-bit approximate radix-4 Booth multipliers with approximate factors of 12 and 14 are more accurate than existing approximate Booth multipliers with moderate power consumption. The proposed R4ABM2 multiplier with an approximation factor of 14 is the most efficient design when considering both power-delay product and the error metric NMED. Case studies for image processing show the validity of the proposed approximate radix-4 Booth multipliers. Index Terms-Radix-4 multiplier, Booth encoder, approximate computing, low power.
High Speed and Reduced Power – Radix-2 Booth Multiplier
2013
A multiplier is one of the key hardware blocks in most digital and high performance systems such as FIR filters, digital signal processors and microprocessors etc. A system‟s performance is generally determined by the performance of the multiplier because the multiplier is generally the slowest element in the whole system. Furthermore, it is generally the most area consuming. Hence, optimizing the speed and area of the multiplier is a major design issue. However, area and speed are usually conflicting constraints so that improving speed results mostly in larger areas. So here idea is to find out the best trade off solution among the both of them. The result of this work helps to make a proper choice among different adders in booth multiplier that is used in different digital applications according to requirements.

Arithmetic unit is the most important component of modern embedded computer systems. Arithmetic unit generally includes floating point and fixed-point arithmetic operations and trigonometric functions. Multipliers units are the most important hardware structures in a complex arithmetic unit. With increase in chip frequency, the designer must be able to find the best set of trade-offs. The ability for faster computation is essential to achieve high performance in many DSP and Graphic processing algorithms and is why there is at least one dedicated Multiplier unit in all of the modern commercial DSP processors. Tremendous advances in VLSI technology over the past several years resulted in an increased need for high speed multipliers and compelled the designers to go for trade-offs among speed, power consumption and area. A novel modified booth multiplier design for high speed VLSI applications using pre-computation logic has been presented in this paper. The proposed architecture mode...
