A Comparative Study of English and Chinese Animal Proverbs—From the Perspective of Metaphors

Proverbs, in nature, are greatly associated with culture. In both form and meaning, they are concise and comprehensive, vivid in images and select materials widely, delivering all sorts of physiological information and cultural knowledge and explicitly expressing all human beings' life, social and historical experience. Since the ancient time, animals have been the most intimate friend of human beings, and people intend to express their feelings and points of view on animals. Therefore, some animal words are added with people's feelings and associations, human beings often deliver ideas and feelings through animals. There are lots of animal proverbs in English and Chinese. Metaphor is ubiquitous. It is not only a rhetorical device but also a mode of thoughts. There are some similarities and differences in animal proverbs' metaphor because of the similar and different faith, value, and ways of thinking and aesthetic orientation. I will make a comparative and contrastive analysis of metaphorical meanings between English and Chinese proverbs and compare some representative animal proverb metaphors. This study is carried out from three main aspects: the same animal produce the same association and metaphorical meaning; the same animal produce different emotions and associations; different animals produce the same association and metaphorical meaning.
Cultural Awareness through Animal Proverbs in English and Myanmar

Every country has proverbs that are unique to it. Proverbs reflect the culture of people and its nation. Proverbs and sayings are effective devices of truth about culture, religion, tradition, custom and belief. The present study tries to find out the cultural differences in the concept of animals through English and Myanmar proverbs.Animals have been in harmony with human beings through centuries. People have used animal images in their daily livesto express their ideas and feelings explicitly. There are lots of animal proverbs in English and Myanmar but this study compares and analyzes some proverbs which are identical in meaning but are different in animal images and proverbs with identical in meaning and animal images.For this purpose 11 proverbs from English and Myanmar are collected and analyzed. It is identified that some proverbs share similar semantic function with different animal images. These proverbs reflect different cultural, social and cognitive values of two nations.
Since language is taken as the reflection of culture, the examination of it and the culture-bound terms have always been considered of the most important parts in translation studies; among such culture-bound terms, animal connotations play significant roles. The present study aims at elucidating some of the similarities and differences of the animal connotations in the proverbs, idioms, and sayings between the two cultures of Persian and English. A further goal of the study is to analyze the procedures applied by the translator(s) in translating such culture bound terms. To meet the goals of the study, the following steps were taken; first, cultural correspondence between the cultures was investigated, second, the strategies applied in translating the culture bound terms were examined, and finally the similarities and differences between the two cultures were shown. The results of the study revealed that the similarities arise from the issue of the universality of concepts among languages and the linkage between the two cultures, and the differences rooted in the historical, religious, and environmental diversities. multiple sites or posted to a listserv without the copyright holder's express written permission. The proverb is a cultural item, embodied in a form of figurative expression, being handed over generations within a particular speech community. Proverbs carry out certain information regarding the culture of the speech community, such as the lifestyles, values, and perspectives of the society. Animal lexicon "dog" becomes the most frequently appeared animal lexicon within proverbs in English and Indonesian languages. A semantic and cultural study of Animal Expressions in English and Persian
Abstract The aim of this paper is to study the meanings and applications of the animal names in English and prison proverbs. Most of the animal expressions reveal the way of thinking and the cultural particularities of each society, so translation of some animal expressions from one language to another one may cause many cultural or communicational misunderstandings. In other words, animal expressions fulfill semantic and sociolinguistic functions in human languages. Most of the animal expressions developed from the culture, society, human relations, and their thoughts. So animal expressions have different positive or negative values and usages in each lingual society. In this research we will deal with the names of some animals that may make cultural or communicational misunderstandings. Animal Metaphor Proverbs in Uzbek and Malay Cross – Culture

Semantic studies in animal metaphors across languages and cultures are also scarce. Study animal metaphors in proverbs across languages is able to contribute to the development of the Uzbek semantics and Malay language comparison. The study of this metaphor also allows to broaden the understanding, shape knowledge, and maintain the values and ideologies practiced by a society. Metaphors contain values in language, as well as enrich the cultural treasures of the community. Humans are human beings who often seek meaning, need meaning and need to give meaning to the reality of life through language, although in some situations the limitations of language symbols possessed limit the process of finding meaning. Metaphors also play a role in highlighting aesthetic values that enable communication to be more easily intertwined. Based on these needs, then Chapter 2 in detail describes the past writings related to the metaphor studied based on academic point of view.
A Comparison of Animal Words in English and Chinese Culture
Animal words are an indispensable part in our daily life. Our relationship with animals and observation of them provide us with a means of association when we speak. However, in the different cultures of the West and the East, the same animal words may express totally opposite meanings. In this paper, the author will study and analyze these animal words and compare them between the two different cultures.

Abstract: Animal words and expressions have slowly become a significant member of the basic vocabulary of many languages in the world. Iranian and English are no exception. Some animal words in Persian and English are the same or similar in cultural connotations, because Iranian and the English people have some same capabilities of thought, some same laws of cognition, and some animals have the same important role in the human life of these two nations, and have the same attributes and features. Metaphorical Role of Animals in Myanmar Proverbs and Myanmar Society

This paper deals with discovering how animals are important in building metaphors in Myanmar proverbs and the role of these animals in Myanmar society and culture. The purpose of the study is to investigate which animals are used in Myanmar proverbs, what are the most common animals used in these proverbs and the role these animals play in everyday life of Myanmar People. The findings reveal that there are 291 metaphors used for 40 animals in 251 proverbs. These animals include domestic animals, wild animals, insects and also mythical creatures such as Dragon and Garuda. The most common animals are birds, fish, elephant, cattle, tiger, dog, chicken, cat, mouse and buffalo. Popular and prominent examples of these ten most common animals are put forward for interpretation under The Contemporary Metaphor Theory and it is found out that the animal metaphors describe a lot about the conceptual mind of Myanmar people and Myanmar historical, geographical, cultural, social, economic and religious conditions.

Proverbs tend to reflect a nation’s social values, attitudes, and beliefs. The connotative meanings underlying animal proverbial sayings can either be affectionate or abusive based on the cultural aspects of the language under investigation. Although the semantic connotations of animal proverbs have been extensively studied, little scholarly attention has been paid to the proverbial expressions pertaining to animals in Saudi Arabia. The main aim of this study is to semantically and pragmatically investigate the connotations of animal proverbs in Hijazi Arabic in Saudi Arabia. The paper also seeks to deduce the representation of human-animal relation and explore the cultural values of the Hijazi society as depicted in the proverbs.
