Graphical Password Authentication Techniques : A Review
2015
In today’s IT world, for the computer and information security the user authentication and authorization play a significant role. For this authentication a password is very important aspect. The conventional method of password is a strong textual password which is also called as alphanumeric password. But because of the problem of memorability, users writing them down on the pieces of papers or kept the password which can be easily memorable. Because of this it is vulnerable to various attacks like brute force, dictionary attack, social engineering, keylogger, spyware, guessing. So to overcome this limitation of textual password, a new password technique is developed which is a Graphical Password .In this as name indicates the images are used as a password. Also psychological study says that images can be easily remembered by human beings as compare to text. Generally password has two essential aspects: security and usability. In Graphical Password, the clicking and dragging activit...
A New Graphical Password: Combination of Recall & Recognition based approach
Information Security is the most describing problem in present times. To cop up with the security of the information, the passwords were introduced. The alphanumeric passwords are the most popular authentication method and still used up to now. However, text based passwords suffer from various drawbacks such as they are easy to crack through dictionary attacks, brute force attacks, keylogger, social engineering etc. Graphical Password is a good replacement for text password. Psychological studies say that human can remember pictures better than text. So this is the fact that graphical passwords are easy to remember. But at the same time due to this reason most of the graphical passwords are prone to shoulder surfing. In this paper, we have suggested a shoulder-surfing resistant graphical password authentication method. The system is a combination of recognition and pure recall based techniques. Proposed scheme can be useful for smart hand held devices (like smart phones i.e. PDAs, iPod, iPhone, etc) which are more handy and convenient to use than traditional desktop computer systems.
Usability and Security of Recognition based Graphical Password Scheme
2016
Authentication is the first line of defense against compromising confidentiality and integrity. People can remember pictures better and for longer periods than alphanumeric passwords. All graphical passwords have two different aspects which are usability and security. Woefully none of these schemes were being able to fulfill both of these aspects at the same time. We analyze the known attack method and categorize them into two kinds Attack by Password Space and Attack by Password Capture. In this paper we summarized the usability and security reported in some user's studies of recognition based graphical password schemes. Finally some suggestion were given
Review Paper Graphical Password Authentication Technique for Security
International Journal for Research in Applied Science & Engineering Technology (IJRASET), 2022
In modern age user authentication is a mandatory attribute in the area of data security. The characteristics of finding an individual generally based on a user id and password which is commonly used methodology for identifying users in system. Text based password is a general authentication method used from early times. There are numerous authentication systems like biometric, textual, graphical, smart card etc. Graphical password is an alternative to alphanumeric password which is tough to remember and generally forget by users as times passes. But in graphical password there is less probability to disremember password because people generally remember images more effortlessly than text based password. There are also fewer probabilities for intruder to take the graphical based password because hackers will not be capable to access the images uploaded by the user as password. Some graphical password schemes have been intended so far as it grows password usability and security. In this paper, we manner a wide survey of the current graphical password methods.
Graphical Password Authentication
IRJET, 2023
Graphical password is one of technic for authentication of computer security. Nowadays digital/computer security is the most important thing in computer science for protecting user or customer data. And Shoulder-surfing is one of the threats where a criminal can steal a password by direct observation or by recording the authentication session. There are several techniques available for this authentication, the most prevalent and simple of which is the Graphical password technique. So, we suggest a new approach to combat this problem. We have developed two concepts to combat shoulder surfing attacks. First, the user must register if the registration does not exist. Second, you must log in with a valid user ID and password. The password is a grouping of characters and numbers. Third, the user has to cross image-based authentication where the user can choose their password and this method has higher chances to offset each other. You should choose a password according to the registration password, it must match at login time. In color base authentication, there should be several color base passwords, and depending on the color, you need to remember the password sequence. And it’s like three-factor authentication. So, here is proposed a new graphical password authentication technique that is resilient to shoulder surfing and also to other types of probable attacks.
A Survey on Textual Graphical Password Scheme
2015
Information and computer security has large numbers of combinations of passwords for the authentication process, but in which alphanumeric username and passwords has too much drawbacks. To reduce all this vulnerabilities of traditional methods, textual graphical password scheme using color combinations have been developed for the possible alternative solution to old one traditional system. The textual password authentication is not secure and has high failure rate compare to the others because shoulder surfing is too much easy for textual based password. To overcome these, the primary design without any extra complexity into the authentication process is improved. With this textual graphical scheme using color, user can efficiently and securely login to the system without worrying of shoulder surfing attack.
A Study on Graphical Password Authentication Techniques
2015
A key area in security research is authentication. Access to system is mostly based on the use of alpha numeric passwords. User felt difficult in remembering the password as that is long and randomly selected and how many passwords will user remember?, it made a complex procedure. This paper presents comparison between Persuasive Cued Click Point Graphical Password scheme and Improved Persuasive Cued Click Points. One such category is click-based graphical passwords where a password is composed of a series of clicks on one or more pixel-based images .To log in, user re-select their click-points in the correct order. Click-points that fall within some acceptable tolerance of the original points should be accepted by the system since it is unrealistic to expect users to accurately target individual pixels. In this paper we describe the PCCP system, its security characteristics, and the study we carried out comparing persuasive click points to alphanumeric passwords. Also several chall...
Secure User Authentication Using Graphical Passwords
2015
The paper discusses secure user authentication mechanisms using graphical passwords. Graphical Password is an alternative to a textual password, which uses images, designs patterns etc. as a password instead of alphanumeric password. Graphical passwords provide better security and usability over textual password, but along with so many advantages of graphical password, they have a major issue of Shoulder Surfing Attack. In this report different techniques of graphical passwords are discussed. To combat shoulder surfing attack, two different techniques of graphical password based authentication are implemented as part of this project. Different user based surveys are conducted. Based on results of user surveys, a comparative analysis is carried out between two prototypes developed in this project. In the end, conclusion is written in terms of application’s security, reliability, user convenience and security against the shoulder surfing attack. Keywords-Graphical Passwords; authentic...
Graphical Password Authentication System Using Modified Intuitive Approach
In today's world everything we use needs security, especially when we are using something on internet. For security purpose, we use text passwords as it is the most popular user authentication method, but have security and user friendly problems. To address this problem, some researchers have developed authentication methods that use pictures as passwords. Graphical passwords offer another alternative, and are the focus of this project. Graphical password authentication systems are a type of Image-based authentication that attempt to understand the human memory for visual information. In Pass Points, passwords consist of sequence pixel click-points on a given image. Users may choose one pixels in that image as click-points for their password. To log in process, they repeat the sequence of clicks in the same order. In this paper, we conduct a modified intuitive approach of the graphical password techniques.
ENHANCEMENT OF SECURITY FEATURE IN GRAPHICAL PASSWORD AUTHENTICATION
TJPRC, 2013
The notion of the paper is to provide an efficient and secure graphical password system with the use of colour images. The images will be the base for the password scheme for the users. The two main features of graphical passwords are usability and security while designing any graphical approach. Hence we need to maintain a balance between both the features. On the basis of the study of the previous algorithms we have analyzed the security features of the algorithms, we added the concept of graining (adding noise to the image) and processed the image using variation in the RGB colour scheme of the image along with rotation and resizing scheme used earlier[1]. Here the images will be concatenated along with the text to enhance the security feature of the approach and this concatenation of the text will serve against shoulder surfing attack
