Sarcopenic Obesity: An Emerging Cause of Frailty in Older Adults (original) (raw)
Aging and obesity have important effects on body composition and health risk. Normal aging is associated with a reduction in muscle mass and strength called sarcopenia. This reduction in lean body mass ordinarily observed with aging is now coupled with carrying a substantial fat mass in many older adults. The individual experiences increased weakness from decreased quantity and quality of muscle mass together with greater body weight to carry. The combination of sarcopenia and obesity is becoming an important public health problem and a new a cause of frailty called sarcopenic obesity. The significance of this is discussed, as are interventions to ameliorate it in older adults.
