The Knowledge Environment for Collaborative Science (KnECS) is an open source informatics toolkit designed to enable knowledge grids that interconnect science communities, unique facilities, data, and tools. KnECS features a web portal with team and data collaboration tools, lightweight federation of data, provenance tracking, and multi-level support for application integration. We identify capabilities of KnECS and discuss extensions from the Collaboratory for Multi-Scale Chemical Sciences (CMCS) which enables diverse combustion science communities to create and share verified, documented data sets and reference data, thereby demonstrating new methods of community interaction and data interoperability required by systems science approaches. Finally, we summarize the challenges we encountered and foresee for knowledge environments.
Metadata for Wicri, a network of semantic Wikis for communities in research and innovation

This paper introduces metadata issues we met in the framework of Wicri project, a network of semantics wikis for communities in research and innovation. Wiki could be related to an institution, a research or innovation area (mainly dealing with environment or ICT at this time), a regional entity. Metadata and semantic items play a strategic function to handle the consistency of the network.
Enabling Open Science: Wikidata for Research (Wiki4R)

Wiki4R will create an innovative virtual research environment (VRE) for Open Science at scale, engaging both professional researchers and citizen data scientists in new and potentially transformative forms of collaboration. It is based on the realizations that (1) the structured parts of the Web itself can be regarded as a VRE, (2) such environments depend on communities, (3) closed environments are limited in their capacity to nurture thriving communities. Wiki4R will therefore integrate Wikidata, the multilingual semantic backbone behind Wikipedia, into existing research processes to enable transdisciplinary research and reduce fragmentation of research in and outside Europe. By establishing a central shared information node, research data can be linked and annotated into knowledge. Despite occasional uses of Wikipedia or Wikidata in research, significant barriers to broader adoption in the sciences or digital humanities exist, including lack of integration into existing research processes and inadequate handling of provenances. On extending the knowledge sharing practices in scientific collaboration to the semantic web

The internet has greatly facilitated scientific collaborations to efficaciously share their analytic knowledge. The impending semantic web promises to dispense with some of the human effort by making the shared knowledge accessible to machines on a semantic basis; giving rise to the connotation of webifying artificial intelligence (AI) for doing reasoning of science, if unchecked, could turn into another pipe-dream. In practise, as exemplified in this paper, it requires considerable effort to put the shared knowledge in common. Therefore, we stress the need to adopt a realistic attitude when extending the knowledge sharing practices in scientific collaboration to the semantic web. Drawing ideas from previous studies in academic communities, supported by our analysis about knowledge sharing in the case study domain of Experimental High-Energy Physics (EHEP), and acknowledging the limitation of AI, we advocate pursuing a pragmatic approach that emphasises the sharing of the analytic knowledge of a domain which is employed in computation, not cognition. Further, we highlight that it is suffice to focus on the directively and paradigmatically shared knowledge in a scientific collaboration.
From data to knowledge through collaboration: bridging Wikis and knowledge systems

This paper presents some scientific aspects of the STIC AmSud project "Semantic-based support for Collaborative Design Activity". The main goal of this cooperation project is to define an operational environment for demonstrating how semantic technologies can be associated with collaborative design activities. In this way, semantic Wikis provide an original and operational infrastructure for efficiently combining both technologies.
Collaborative Editing and Linking of Astronomy Vocabularies Using Semantic Mediawiki
Abstract. The International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA) comprises 17 Virtual Observatory (VO) projects and facilitates the creation, coordination and collaboration of standards promoting the use and reuse of astronomical data archives. The Semantics working group in the IVOA has repurposed five existing vocabularies (modelled using SKOS), capturing concepts within specific areas of astronomy expertise and applications.
WikiDesign: A Semantic Wiki to Evaluate Collaborative Knowledge

This paper presents a knowledge evaluation and evolution in a knowledge management system by using a Semantic Wiki approach. The authors describe a Semantic Wiki called WikiDesign which is a component of a Knowledge Management system. Currently WikiDesign is used in engineering departments of companies to emphasize technical knowledge. This study explains how WikiDesign ensures the reliability of the knowledge base thanks to a knowledge evaluation process. After explaining the interest of the use of semantic wikis in knowledge management approach, the architecture of WikiDesign with its semantic functionalities is described. The effectiveness of WikiDesign is proved with a knowledge evaluation example for an industrial project.
Semantics on demand: Can a Semantic Wiki replace a knowledge base?

In the same way that Wikis have become the mechanism that has enabled groups of users to collaborate on the production of hypertexts on the web, Semantic Wikis promise a future of collaboration on the production of semantically linked and ontologically structured hypertexts. In this paper we describe our efforts to convert an existing ontologically structured web site called Framework Reference Model for Assessment (FREMA) into a Semantic Wiki specifically to enable community contribution.
