Brought to life by text linguistics in 1960s, discourse studies have been flourishing and spanning diverse linguistic, cultural and social phenomena, attracting not only linguists, but ethnologists, anthropologists, sociologists, sociolinguists, philosophers, psychologists, psycholinguists and a number of interdisciplinary researchers. By now discourse analysis has grown into an independent discipline and has become a truly universal tool for studying a wide range of heterogeneous phenomena. The beginning of the 21st century saw a growing interest towards research in institutional discourses, such as political, advertising, pedagogical, military, medical, scientific, legal, diplomatic, administrative, dramatic, cinematic, sports discourse, news discourse and so on - the list is added on a daily basis. There is also a number of works on gothic, teratological, vampire, zombie and monster discourses. However not much has been said on horror discourse and this article is an endeavor to describe it as a discourse with specific prototypical features, distinguishing it from similar ones.
