Metadata can significantly assist in effectively accessing and managing learning objects. Currently, there are many systems which are intended to collect, share and reuse distributed learning objects, presenting the end-user with a uniform interface to search, access and evaluate these resources. On the other hand, although a generally accepted international standard for describing educational material exists, namely the IEEE Learning Object Metadata standard, many Learning object Metadata Management Systems are still using other metadata models for describing learning objects or previous versions of the IEEE LOM standard. This chapter outlines the requirements for a learning object metadata management system. These requirements go beyond metadata authoring and management, supporting the educational community in the integration of learning objects through the management of interoperable learning object repositories.

Educational metadata can significantly assist the effective retrieval of educational resources. Currently, there are a number of tools for educational metadata authoring, facilitating the manipulation of educational metadata files. This paper outlines the requirements, and proposes an architecture for the development of a compete LRM management system which go beyond metadata authoring, supporting the educational community in the full management of LRM through the management of interoperable learning objects repositories.

The world of closed Learning Management Systems (LMS) is being replaced by open systems for sharing and reusing digital Learning Objects (LOs) between users, courses, institutions and countries. This poses new challenges in describing these LOs with detailed and correct metadata. This information background is needed for querying services to perform accurate queries for LO retrieval. In this paper we present metadata specific challenges when converting from a local LMS with proprietary metadata schema to a global metadata schema. We have uncovered extensive LO description possibilities based on the existing, local LMS, registered metadata, its LO types and the local context. Files can contain extensive metadata descriptions, though require special attention. We have confirmed that technologies developed as crosswalks are valid for usage in this projects for a one-time metadata transferral. However, transferring of all local metadata elements can result in incompatibility issues with other LMSs. This, even when keeping with the global metadata schema.

Although LO management is an interesting subject to study due to the current interoperability potential, it is not promoted very much because a number of issues remain to be resolved. LOs need to be designed to achieve educational goals, and the metadata schema must have the kind of information to make them reusable in other contexts. This paper presents a pilot project in the design, implementation and evaluation of learning objects in the field of university education, with a specific focus on the development of a metadata Typology and quality evaluate tool, concluding with a summary and analysis of the end results.

In this paper we illustrate a dynamic approach in the use of the metadata and how this concept can dramatically improve the management of Learning Objects. Specifically, the ideas elaborated in this paper rise from the experiences in managing Learning Object Repositories during three European funded projects: Sloop, Tenegen, and Sloop2desc.

The aim of the article is to present the model of knowledge repository based on the metadata standards used to describe the educational course contents using LOM (Learning Object Metadata) as the example. The components of description of metadata on various aggregation levels as well as exemplary tools for metadata edition are presented. The importance of this model for development of e-learning is discussed. Special attention is paid to generalization of dissipated objects and Learning Objects (LO) are such ones and to their effect on reduction of costs related to creating new educational objects on various platforms taking advantage of ready to use courses.
