Performance Assessment of the Quality of Service of a GSM Network in Kaduna State Nigeria

1st International Conference on Engineering and Applied Natural Sciences, 2022

As the number of mobile subscribers exponentially increase, one of the key goals of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) nowadays is to keep its subscribers satisfied with good Quality of Service (QoS) in order to increase the Quality of Experience (QoE) for the end user. In order to achieve the best performance, MNOs need to be continuously monitored in order to for them to optimize their network continuously. On this premise, this research work utilizes the statistical data of call traffic from the Base Station Controller (BSC_KDBH14) in Kaduna State, which takes into account the KPI obtained from 48 BTSs. The evaluation of the KPI measurements taken from the MNO showed that 2% of the Call Setup Success Rate (CSSR) failed to be within Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC's) benchmark (≥98%), and as a result, 2% of the dataset generated for the Call Setup Failure Rate (CSFR) failed to be within NCC's benchmark (≤2%). The Call Completion Rate (CCR) had all the datasets within NCCs benchmark (≥96%), but unfortunately, the Call Drop Rate had 15% of its BTSs Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) outside the NCC's benchmark (≤2%). To this end, this work highlighted the BTSs that needed close attention in order to optimize the network.

Quality of Service and Performance Analysis of A GSM Network In Eagle Square, Abuja and Its Environs, Nigeria

Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of end-user Experience (QoE) are the two major techniques used for judging the performance of GSM services. While the former is adjudged by service providers, the latter is determined by reactions from end-users (subscribers). Assessment of GSM services from service providers' perspective is usually based on some Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). This paper utilize the five major KPIs (CCSF, TCH-CR, CSSR, DCR, HOSR) to assess the GSM QoS provided by MTN, Nigeria to cover Eagle Square Abuja before, during and after PDP presidential primary election. The results show that the KPIs deviate from the recommended values both during the event and non-event period thus the QoS requires an uncompromising improvements inorder to curtail further degradation in the services derived by the rapidly increasing subscribers' rate..

Assessment of Quality of Service of G.S.M. Networks in Ilorin Metropolis, Nigeria

AJERD , 2020

Following the rollout of GSM services across Nigeria, the socioeconomic landscape of the country has been positively altered. Its explosive growth has brought huge revenues to the operators, as well as the government and at the same time benefited the citizens in many ways. However, the principal developmental factors that has continued to mar these benefits is the aggressive complaints from GSM subscribers regarding the horrible Quality of Service (QoS) rendered by the GSM operators across the country. As the number of subscribers of GSM in Nigeria increased, congestion rates also increased and there has been a huge demand for a decent QoS in the country. In this study, three key performance indicators (KPI) parameters, call setup success rate (CSSR), received signal level (RSL) and call drop rate (CDR) were used in assessing the performance of two of the major GSM networks in Ilorin Metropolis of Nigeria, which have been tagged Network "A" and Network "B". A and B monitored are far from providing reliable services to Nigerians. None of the networks in the study met the ≥ 98% CSSR required by the N.C.C. regulations, and none met the ≤ 2% CDR required by the N.C.C. regulations. The problems GSM operation encountered have been attributed to a number of challenges, with cited faults ranging from the Network providers, to regulatory agencies, and even to the Nigerian Government.

Performance Evaluation Of Selected Gsm Networks In Nigeria

Science and Technology Publishing (SCI & TECH), 2023

In this paper, performance evaluation of selected GSM networks in Nigeria is presented. The performance evaluation of the networks is based on requisite datasets pertaining to those networks and some key performance indicators (KPIs) which are applicable for Quality of Service (QoS) assessment of GSM networks. Specifically, seven (7) KPI parameters were computed, namely; Call Setup Success Rate (CSSR), Call Drop Rate (CDR), Standalone Dedicated Control Channel (SDCCH) congestion rate, Traffic Control Channel (TCC) congestion rate, Call Block Rate (CBR), Handover Success Rate (HOSR) and Handover Failure Rate (HOFR). The results show that from June, 2020 to May, 2022, MTN has the highest CSSR value of 99.73 % followed by Airtel with 99.41% then 9mobile with 99.19 % and Globacom 99.06 %. Also, MTN has lowest Call Drop Rate (CDR) value of 0.28, followed by Globacom with CDR value of 0.32, Airtel had CDR value of 0.35 and 9mobile had CDR value of 0.43. Again, only the network of MTN and Airtel have Standalone Dedicated Control Channel (SDCCH) < 0.2% as mandated by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) while Globacom had SDCCH > 0.2% in October and 9mobile had SDCCH > 0.2% in about 13 month. In addition, Airtel, 9mobile, Globacom and MTN satisfied the NCC requirement of Traffic Control Channel (TCCH) ≤ 2%. Similarly, only Airtel and MTN have call blocked rate (CBR) ≤ 2.0% while Globacom exceeded 2% in October 2021 and 9mobile exceeded 2% in about 6months. Also, only MTN network was able to meet the Handover Success Rate (HOSR) ≥ 98 % requirement in all the months, while Airtel had HOSR < 98% for about 5 months, Globacom had HOSR < 98% for all the months and 9mobile had HOSR < 98% for about 17 months. In all, among the four GSM networks considered in the study, the best performance was recorded for the MTN network.

AN APPRAISAL OF GSM NETWORK IN NIGERIA

The adoption of the GSM system of communication in Nigeria is a long awaited development expected in the telecommunication industry. It is expected that its introduction will bring about effective telecommunication services that will support good speech quality, roaming, and spectral efficiency and minimized crosstalk, just to mention but few. Its deployment into the market was well embraced by Nigerians and found to be relatively efficient compare to analogue technology of Wired NITEL line. Presently the total number of GSM operators in the country is five, NITEL will not be considered under quality of service key indicators as its subscribers remain the same since its inception. GSM technology has improved to 3.5G technology that enables the use of mobile network for other services apart from voice call services like GPRS, internet, E-presence, just to mention but few. But this starting good efficiency is now being hampered by some factors leading to the degradation in services offered by operators. This paper has appraised the performance of GSM operators in Nigeria, using five Quality of Service Key Indicators, possible causes of inefficiency were mentioned and methods for improvement were recommended

Evaluation Of The Quality Of Service Of Global System For Mobile Telecommunication ( GSM ) Operators In Nigeria

2015

Excellent Quality of service sustains customers' confidence and is essential for a competitive advantage. It is an important key performance indicator (KPI) that is used in determining the efficiency of an industry in terms of services rendered. Poor performance of a telecom network would provoke customer complaints and faults, thereby leading to customer dissatisfaction towards the operator. This paper has therefore aimed at evaluating the quality of service rendered by Telecom Operators in Nigeria and also suggest on how to improve on their services.
