On positivity of orthogonal series and its applications in probability
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for an orthogonal series to converge in the mean-squares to a nonnegative function. We present many examples and applications, in analysis and probability. In particular, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Lancaster-type of expansion n≥0 cnαn(x)β n (y) with two sets of orthogonal polynomials {αn} and {β n } to converge in means-squares to a nonnegative bivariate function. In particular, we study the properties of the set C(α, β) of the sequences {cn} , for which the above-mentioned series converge to a nonnegative function and give conditions for the membership to it. Further, we show that the class of bivariate distributions for which a Lancaster type expansion can be found, is the same as the class of distributions having all conditional moments in the form of polynomials in the conditioning random variable.
Two properties of vectors of quadratic forms in Gaussian random variables
We study distributions of random vectors whose components are second order polynomials in Gaussian random variables. Assuming that the law of such a vector is not absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure, we derive some interesting consequences. Our second result gives a characterization of limits in law for sequences of such vectors.

Our most important result concerns the positivity of certain kernels built of the so-called q−ultraspherical polynomials. Since this result appears at first sight as primarily important for those who are working in orthogonal polynomials, q−series theory and the so-called quantum polynomials, it might have a limited number of interested researchers. That is why, we put our result into a broader context. We recall the theory of Hilbert-Schmidt operators, Lancaster expansions and their applications in Mathematical statistics, or bivariate distributions absolutely continuous with respect to the product of their marginal distributions leading to the generation of Markov process with polynomial conditional moments (the main representative of such processes is a famous Wiener process).
ON SOME NEW CLASSES OF MULTIVARIATE PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS
New Classes of transformations on the Euclidean n-space R n are applied to sets of n (n = 2, 3, …) independent random variables T 1 , …, T n. Basically two cases are considered: 1) the random variables are all Weibullian, and 2) they are all gamma. The transformations, when applied to the random vectors (T 1 , …, T n), produce, as outputs, r. vectors (X 1 , …, X n) whose joint probability densities are investigated. The new probability densities of (X 1 , …, X n) produced by the Weibullian input r. variables T 1 , …, T n are called " pseudoWeibullians " , and the other " pseudogammas ". The origin and the basis for new methods of pdfs construction is set of problems associated with multicomponent system reliability modeling. In this context the random variables X 1 , …, X n are used to represent the system components life times.
Two-dimensional Meixner Random Vectors of Class mathcalML{\mathcal{M}}_{L}mathcalML
Journal of Theoretical Probability, 2011
The paper is divided into two parts. In the first part we lay down the foundation for defining the joint annihilation-preservationcreation decomposition of a finite family of, not necessarily commutative random variables, and show that this decomposition is essentially unique.
Orthogonal polynomials and natural exponential families
Test, 1996
There exist several different characterizations of the class of quadratic natural exponential families on R, two of which use orthogonal polynomials. In Feinsilver (1986), the polynomials result from the derivation of the probability densities whileMeixner (1934) adopts an exponential generating function. In this paper, we consider multidimensional extensions of their results which still yield quadratic or simple quadratic natural exponential families.
On α-symmetric multivariate distributions
Journal of Multivariate Analysis, 1983
A random vector is said to have a l-symmetric distribution if its characteristic function is of the form 4(] t,l + ... + 1 t.1). l-Symmetric distributions are characterized through representations of the admissible functions Q and through stochastic representations of the radom vectors, and some of their properties are studied.

This paper deals with the classes S 3 (, , b) of strong distribution functions defined on the interval [ 2 /b, b], 0 < < b ∞, where 2 ∈ Z. The classification is such that the distribution function ∈ S 3 (, , b) has a (reciprocal) symmetry, depending on , about the point. We consider properties of the L-orthogonal polynomials associated with ∈ S 3 (, , b). Through linear combination of these polynomials we relate them to the L-orthogonal polynomials associated with some ∈ S 3 (1/2, , b).
A Probablistic Origin for a New Class of Bivariate Polynomials
Symmetry, Integrability and Geometry: Methods and Applications, 2008
We present here a probabilistic approach to the generation of new polynomials in two discrete variables. This extends our earlier work on the 'classical' orthogonal polynomials in a previously unexplored direction, resulting in the discovery of an exactly soluble eigenvalue problem corresponding to a bivariate Markov chain with a transition kernel formed by a convolution of simple binomial and trinomial distributions. The solution of the relevant eigenfunction problem, giving the spectral resolution of the kernel, leads to what we believe to be a new class of orthogonal polynomials in two discrete variables. Possibilities for the extension of this approach are discussed.
