Computer science research in Malaysia: a bibliometric analysis

Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to analyse the publications of, and the citations to, the current staff of 19 departments of computer science in Malaysian universities, and to compare these bibliometric data with expert peer reviews of Malaysian research performance. Design/methodology/approach -This paper searches citation of the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Findings -Both publication and citation rates are low, although this is at least in part due to some Malaysian universities having only a teaching function. More of the departments' publications were identified in Scopus than in Web of Science, but both databases were needed for comprehensive coverage. Statistically significant relationships were observed between the departments' publication and citation counts and the rankings of the departments' parent universities in two evaluations of the research performance of Malaysian universities. Originality/value -This is the first comparison of bibliometric and peer-review data for Malaysia, and, more generally, for a country with a newly developed higher education system.

Single journal studies are reviewed and measures used in the studies are highlighted. The following quantitative measures are used to study 272 articles published in Malaysian Journal of Computer Science, (1) the article productivity of the journal from 1985 to 2007, (2) the observed and expected authorship productivity tested using Lotka's Law of author productivity, identification and listing of core authors; (3) the authorship, co-authorship pattern by authors' country of origin and institutional affiliations; (4) the subject areas of research; (5) the citation analysis of resources referenced as well as the age and half-life of citations; the journals referenced and tested for zonal distribution using Bradford's law of journal scattering; the extent of web citations; and (6) the citations received by articles published in MJCS and impact factor of the journal based on information obtained from Google Scholar, the level of author and journal self-citation.
Characteristics of Malaysian highly cited papers

Highly cited papers serve as a proxy for excellence. In this paper, we identify Malaysia's highly-cited papers and explore the characteristics of these papers. The research question posed is "What characterizes Malaysian highly cited papers?" This study adopts the definition by Thomson Reuters Essential Science Indicator, i.e. the highly cited papers are papers that received enough citations to be placed in the top 1 percent of the academic field of each 22 subject areas based on a highly cited threshold for the field and publication year. As a small scientific nation, Malaysia has a rather limited number of papers being highly cited, and we observed nine characteristics of highly cited papers based on 708 datasets obtained from the Web of Science. Malaysian highly cited papers are largely represented by articles, but reviews have higher impact. Typically, these papers have a low self-cited index and they are published in the First Quartile of the science discipline publications. The papers are mainly the outcome of national funded research; involve multiple co-authorship and international collaboration; affiliated to Malaysian research universities and Malaysian authors often play a dominant role as first or reprint authors. Partnership with scientists from Iran, Australia and UK may increase markedly the possibility of a Malaysian paper becoming highly cited. This investigation has shown that these are the characteristics of Malaysian highly cited papers, but to what extent can these be used as indicators need further investigation and discussions among the scientific community.

, IEL (IEE/IEEE Electronic Library) (1988)(1989)(1990)(1991)(1992)(1993)(1994)(1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999) and INSPEC (1990INSPEC ( -1998 revealed a total of 389 publications contributed by Malaysian researchers in the field of computer science and information technology. The trend in output indicates rapid growth that is expected to continue in future. A total of 458 unique Malaysian authors contributed to the 389 publications. Collaboration between two authors was the dominant authorship pattern. Single-authored or more than 3-authored works were rare. The active authors were affiliated to a few institutions, with the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Malaya accounting for the highest number of publications, either in the form of journal articles or papers in conference proceedings. The most active research areas include simulation system, control engineering, computer-assisted instruction, programming techniques, expert systems, asynchronous transfer mode, image processing, software engineering and digital signal processing and applications.
Bibliometric Analysis of Computer Science Literature of Pakistan

Bibliometric analysis is the study of analysing the published works and to find trends in order to identify any weaknesses or different areas that are left unattended, and unexplored. It is also used to recognize and appreciate the importance of seminal works in various fields of sciences and humanities, and to identify future research directions in a field of study. In this work, we analyse the computer science literature published in Pakistan in the 21 century (2000 – 2017). We identify the top cited publications in the considered time span, and rank the publications based on cumulative citation count as well as normalized citation count. We analyse the distribution of citation count and compare it with other works. In addition, the top institutions in terms of publication counts are identified. Finally, we compared the computer science research output of Pakistan to that of Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Our work is beneficial both to the research community...

This study analyses the scholarly publications of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in conjunction with 50 years of UTM establishment. A bibliometric analysis is performed to analyse the UTM’s publication and research trends over the 50 years, especially during the post-research university (RU) period, publications impacts, subject area expertise and publications performance in comparison to other RU. Based on the analysis, engineering and computer science are the most prominent fields among the research fields in UTM in terms of a number of publications and citations thus far. Among the top 10 fields in UTM, materials science, chemical engineering, energy and chemistry areas are seen to have a high potential to further excel in citation provided that the publication numbers of these fields are further increased. An analysis of 241 papers published in Malaysian Journal of Library and Information Science during 2007-2018 indicates that the number of papers published as well as the reference per paper has increased in later years as compared to the initial years. The share of single authored papers decreased and multi-authored papers increased during the second block of 2013-2018. Malaysia, the country of origin of the journal published highest number of papers. However, the value of Citation per Paper (CPP) was highest for UK. Among the institutes, University of Malaya (Malaysia) contributed the highest number of papers and University of Dhaka (Bangladesh) had the highest value of CPP. Most of the prolific authors as well as highly cited authors were affiliated to University of Malaya. Among the prolific authors Kiran Kaur of the University of Malaya had the highest value of CPP. University of Malaya also had the highest number of papers in domestic as well as in international collaboration.
Highly Cited Publications Output by India in Computer Science 1996-15: A Scientometric Assessment

The study identified highly cited papers in India's computer science research during 1996-2015 and analyzed their publication and citation distributions to understand what role contributing authors, research organizations as well as international collaborative countries have played in Indian computer science research. Highly cited paper were defined as papers that received at least 100 citations since publication. Based on this criteria, it was found that India published a total of 406 highly cited articles in computer science, constituting 0.32% world share during 1996-15. In recent years, top-cited articles have reached their citation peak in the early years of their citation life cycle, but have shown a more-rapid decreasing trend compared to top-cited articles from past decades. These 406 highly articles have an average citation per paper of around 258. The institutional distribution was highly skewed with only a few reputed institutions contributing to highly cited papers. International collaboration mainly happened with the USA. One observes from this study that India's productivity of highly cited papers in computer scienceby authors is abysmally low and theslow growth rate of high quality papers in computer science is a matter of concern. The article argues that challenge before the top leadership in science in the country is how to encourage team-based/multi-institutional collaborative research in order to produce and publish high quality and high impact research work in computer science.
