Mature biofilm composition on demineralized and on infiltrated bovine enamel (original) (raw)

Abstract

Objective: The infiltration of initial carious lesions has become a successful micro-invasive method to inhibit further caries progression. As previously shown, the initial and long-term biofilm formation on demineralized (=carious) and on infiltrated surfaces, respectively, varies greatly. While some individuals display significantly more biofilm on infiltrated surfaces, the objective of this study was to investigate if the composition of the biofilm differs within these two groups. Method: Bovine enamel specimen (ΓΈ 5mm) were demineralized only (group 1) or demineralized and infiltrated (group 2). These specimen were worn within intra-oral splints by healthy volunteers for 3 days (six specimen per volunteer). After 72 hrs, the specimen underwent fluorescence-in-situ-hybridization (FISH) and were evaluated via confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Eubacteria in general, Streptococcus spp., Veillonella spp., Actinomyces naeslundii and Fusobacterium nucleatum were selected for in...
