Do species of Crataegus sect. Sanguineae occur in Iran?

Results of a revision of Iranian species of Crataegus section Sanguineae are presented here. Previously, two species of this section, C. sanguinea Pall. and C. babakhanloui Khat., were reported from Iran. However, detailed analyses of morphological and micro-morphological characteristics, as well as phytogeographical data, could not confi rm this information; herbarium specimens recognised as C. sanguinea appeared to be C. pentagyna Waldst. & Kit. (C. sect. Pentagynae), while C. babakhanloui should be included in the C. section Crataegus. Th e section Sanguineae is represented in Iran only by C. wattiana Hemsl. & Lace, the presence of which is reported here for the fi rst time.

The new subsection Alyssum sect. Odontarrhena subsect. Stipitata is described, Alyssum stipitatum is designated as the type. Alyssum m ozaffarian ii, A. stipitatum and Farsetia assadii are described as new species, Alyssum argenteum, A. callichroum, A. condensatum, A. harputicum, A. obtusifolium, A. sibiricum, A. singarense, Farsetia longisiliqua and F. stylosa are reported as new records to Iran.

Crataegus belongs to Pyreae tribe and Rosaceae family. Crataegus, has about 700 species, distributed mainly in temperate regions of northern Hemisphere. Diagnoses of these species rely on morphological features of leaves, flowers and fruits. We used nuclear (ribosomal ITS) DNA regions to estimate the phylogeny of Crataegus species of Iran. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian analyses all corroborate the sister group relationship between Crataegus and Mespilus, and Crataegus brachyacantha is sister to the rest of that genus species. According to results, Mespilus is considered as sister group to the monophyletic Crataegus species. Trees are divided into two main brands which show separation of old world from new world species. Crataegusazarolus L. has a wide distribution pattern from the western Mediterranean coasts to the eastern parts of Iran with several varieties adapted to local climatic conditions. Crataegusazarolusvar.senobaaensisvar. nov. is described as a new variety from southeast Turkey with characteristic deep leaf sinuses, mostly 3–4 pairs of lobes and leaves ovate-oblong in outline. Two varieties of the species are accepted under the name of Crataegusazarolus and the correct names are published here. We clarified the current state of genus Crataegus L. in the flora of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (Azerbaijan) using a comparative analysis of herbarium specimens from the Azarbaijan herbariums and data collected during the expeditions in 2004–2018. We succeed in adding some important data on the flora of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and Azerbaijan, we also enhanced the previous research with chromosome and morphological analysis. In the context of systematic and biosystematic studies on Eurasiatic Crataegus (Rosaceae, subtribe Pyrinae) based on leaf and petal SEM photographs and morphological features, Crataegus khatamsazae Hamzeh ' ee, K. I. Chr. & Attar sp. nov. and C. hatamii Hamzeh ' ee, K. I. Chr. & Attar sp. nov. are described as new taxa, and C. caucasica is reported as a new record to Iran. Crataegus aminii is found to be synonymous with C. babakhanloui and not with C. ambigua subsp. ambigua. Th e description of C. kurdistanica is improved. Th e situation for C. sakranensis in Iran is discussed and its morphological characterization is improved. A new identifi cation key to the recognised Iranian taxa of subser. Erianthae is provided and the distributions of these taxa are outlined.
