Radial Convection of Plasma Structures in a Turbulent Rotating Magnetized-Plasma Column (original) (raw)

The frequent situation where a strongly nonlinear rotating structure develops in a linear magnetized plasma column is investigated experimentally with emphasis on the ion velocity distribution function (IVDF). Most often, a mode m ¼ 2 appears exhibiting a large density and potential perturbation with angular frequency slightly above the ion cyclotron frequency. For the first time the spatiotemporal evolution of the IVDF is studied using time-resolved laser induced fluorescence to explore the ion's interaction with the nonlinear wave propagating inside the column and at the origin of plasma transport outside the limiter. The ion fluid exhibits an alternance from azimuthal to radial velocity due to the electric field inside the rotating structure. A fluid model also allows us to locally reconstruct the self-consistent electric field evolution which contradicts all existing theories.
Rotation of a magnetized plasma
Physics of Plasmas, 2011
The plasma rotation in the axial magnetic field of the linear machine Mistral ͓A. Escarguel, Eur. Phys. J. D 56, 209 ͑2010͔͒ is well described by the assumption that the electrons injected from the source exit radially from the central column and are subject to the Lorentz force. Electrons and ions rotate together by ambipolarity. The solution of the momentum equations foresees correctly the observed radial dependence of the ionic radial velocity measured by laser induced fluorescence. The resolution of these equations is also in good agreement with the measured dependence of the rotation frequency on the applied magnetic field and on the background pressure.
Physics of Plasmas, 2009
The low-frequency instability of a magnetized plasma column and the anomalous radial plasma convection are shown to be linked with the existence of a radial cross-field current along a plasma channel rotating around the central magnetized plasma. The direct observation of the rotating plasma is obtained using an ultra-fast intensified camera. The ionizing electrons injected along the axis of the plasma column contribute to the accumulation of negative charges when the axial collector is at floating potential. The required neutrality leads to the continuous radial expulsion of energetic electrons and to the formation of a rotating plasma channel (m=1 unstable wave).
Electrostatic turbulence and transport in a simple magnetized plasma
Physics of Plasmas, 2006
Gradient driven electrostatic instabilities are investigated in TORPEX ͓A. Fasoli, B. Labit, M. McGrath, S. H. Müller, M. Podestà, and F. M. Poli, Bull. Am. Phys. Soc. 48, 119 ͑2003͔͒, a toroidal device ͑R =1 m, a = 0.2 m͒ in which plasmas are produced by microwaves ͑P ഛ 20 kW͒ with f rf = 2.45 GHz, in the electron cyclotron frequency range. Typical density and temperature are n e ഛ 10 17 m −3 and T e Ӎ 5 eV, respectively. The magnetic field is mainly toroidal ͑ഛ0.1 T͒, with a small vertical component ͑ഛ4 mT͒. Instabilities that can be generally identified as drift-interchange waves are observed and characterized for different levels of collisionality with neutrals. The frequency spectrum and the spatial profile of the fluctuation-induced flux are measured. An 86-tip probe is used to reconstruct the spatio-temporal evolution of density structures across the plasma cross section. The measured structures are characterized statistically, and related quantitative observables are constructed.
Turbulent Particle Transport in Magnetized Plasmas
Physical Review Letters, 2003
Particle transport in magnetized plasmas is investigated with a fluid model of drift wave turbulence. An analytical calculation shows that magnetic field curvature and thermodiffusion drive an anomalous pinch. The curvature driven pinch velocity is consistent with the prediction of turbulence equipartition theory. The thermodiffusion flux is found to be directed inward for a small ratio of electron to ion pressure gradient, and reverses its sign when increasing this ratio. Numerical simulations confirm that a turbulent particle pinch exists. It is mainly driven by curvature for equal ion and electron heat sources. The sign and relative weights of the curvature and thermodiffusion pinches are consistent with the analytical calculation.
Low-Frequency Turbulence in a Linear Magnetized Plasma
Physical Review Letters, 2010
Plasma turbulence in a linear device is explored for the first time with three-dimensional global twofluid simulations, focusing on the plasma parameters of the Large Plasma Device. Three instabilities are present in the simulations: the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, a sheath-driven instability, and a resistive drift wave instability. The Kelvin-Helmholtz mode is shown to dominate the transport of plasma across the magnetic field. Simple scaling laws are obtained for the plasma profiles.
Turbulence and intermittent transport at the boundary of magnetized plasmas
Physics of Plasmas, 2005
Numerical fluid simulations of interchange turbulence for geometry and parameters relevant to the boundary region of magnetically confined plasmas are shown to result in intermittent transport qualitatively similar to recent experimental measurements. The two-dimensional simulation domain features a forcing region with spatially localized sources of particles and heat outside which losses due to the motion along open magnetic-field lines dominate, corresponding to the edge region and the scrape-off layer, respectively. Turbulent states reveal intermittent eruptions of hot plasma from the edge region, propagating radially far into the scrape-off layer in the form of field-aligned filaments, or blobs. This results in positively skewed and flattened single-point probability distribution functions of particle density and temperature, reflecting the frequent appearance of large fluctuations. The conditional fluctuation wave forms and transport statistics are also in a good agreement with those derived from the experiments. Associated with the turbulence bursts are relaxation oscillations in the particle and heat confinements as well as in the kinetic energy of the sheared poloidal flows. The formation of blob structures is thus related to profile variations, which are here triggered in a quasiperiodic manner by a global dynamical regulation due to the self-sustained sheared flows.
