Visual Preferences For The Development of A Malaysian Garden Identity

Malaysia is a developing country that has been experiencing rapid development since its independence in 1957. The country-with its unique natural and cultural heritage-is in need of projecting its own landscape identity through the development of a distinct national garden identity. This paper discusses a study that used Content Identifying Methodology to determine Malaysian public preferences among the iconographies of four selected well-established gardens, with the purpose of determining visual preferences of Malaysians for their own developing gardens. The results of the study found that plants, water, and traditional architectural features imbued with meaning were the preferred elements for a Malaysian garden. Respondents also indicated preferences for garden layouts that possessed legibility and mysterious qualities. These findings are useful for policy makers and landscape professionals with an interest in developing gardens with a Malaysian identity. These findings could also throw some light on other developing gardens, especially those in newly developed countries.

Landscape Aesthetic Values and Visiting Performance in Natural Outdoor Environment 2015

Natural outdoor environment that is aesthetically pleasing, flexible and functional will motivates people to visit those places. Visiting performance to a place is supported by landscape aesthetic values that can promote better participation and social engagement among visitors. Aesthetic values of landscape are due to a range of landscape attributes. Natural elements are known to function as " natural tranquillizers " that is beneficial in urban areas where stress is a common in daily living. Therefore, this study is aimed to discover the role of landscape aesthetic values in influencing the visiting performance at National Botanical Garden Shah Alam, Malaysia.

The user's perceptions of Perdana Botanical Garden in Kuala Lumpur

Public parks are often visualized as open spaces which encourage social interaction and are used for recreational purposes. In Malaysia, the planning of parks is based on the hierarchical planning standard requirement in accordance to the size of catchment area. Public parks at a smaller scale are provided in residential areas for the enjoyment of the neighborhoods. In larger cities such as Kuala Lumpur and Georgetown, urban parks do not only serve as the recreational areas for the residents; they are also tourism attractions, such as Perdana Botanical Garden in Kuala Lumpur, which was originally planned as an urban park in Kuala Lumpur. However, due to the dual uses for both recreation and tourism, conflicts may arise due to the different expectations by park users. This paper intends to reveal the user’s perceptions about the role of Perdana Botanical Garden for recreational purpose. The findings revealed that the park users were satisfied with the activities and facilities offered in the park except the parking facilities especially when its location is not within the walking distance for most of the users. Further to that, it is revealed that the role of Perdana Botanical Garden as a tourism attraction has benefited the park users especially in terms of its management, maintenance and the activities created. Nonetheless, improvement in terms of parking facilities to accommodate the users came with private transportation and better accessibility for the tourists via public transportation mode must be adequately considered.

Malay Garden as Tourism Product in Malaysia

This study introduces the concept of Malay garden design in the eyes of tourists, particularly from the inside and outside the country. The objectives are to explain the relationship between cultural tourism and cultural landscape and how to produce the concept of landscape design as a new tourism product to become tourist attractions in Malaysia by using the old Malay manuscripts and an observation to the old houses of the Malay community in Peninsular Malaysia. Finally, researchers are ready to offer ideas to the planning and development of new tourism products based on local culture especially the Malays culture. Value of Nature in Life: Landscape Visual Quality Assessment at Rainforest Trail, Penang

Interest in recreational activities such as visiting the trail, observe nature and meditation has increased in the Rainforest Trail of Penang Botanical Garden recently. Previous research found that the landscape visual quality is the main reason why people visit the place. A survey was undertaken on visitors to the Rainforest Trail for this purpose. The data was analysed using descriptive statistics, correlations and significant differences tests. This study found that the man-made landscape can be considered contrary to the intended natural characteristic of the Rainforest Trail even despite, attempts to blend in the man made changes with original natural appearance.

Experiencing the visual field of vegetation spaces in urban botanical gallery.pdf

Botanical parks been placed in residential and commercial areas in Kuala Lumpur to reduce the massive development impact. Low level of the awareness towards the application of the experiencing architecture lead to the inefficient inspirational vegetation space in Kuala Lumpur. This research aimed to optimize the visible experience of vegetation spaces in order to bring out the experiencing visual field of vegetation spaces hence stimulate the aspect of loving trees. The objectives of the research are to identify types of experiential spaces in the presence of green plants in botanical gallery based visual experiences and supported by smell and touch depending on space’s program. Next, the frequency of the architectural vegetation interventions towards human’s emotional need was measured and space syntax visual graph analysis was applied in finding the relation between visual connections and green plant spaces. This research focused on developing the green visual experiencing architecture by providing every aspects of design elements in designing vegetation spaces. This study hoped on providing better botanical architectural interventions towards the public. In seeking the possible solution, content analysis through literature reviews, case studies and a questionnaire were conducted throughout the study. This research has listed down the strategies and design elements in developing experiencing architectural philosophy based on visual field precisely in providing future inspirational vegetation spaces.

Implementing the Malaysian Heritage Garden as the Identity for National Landscape: Case Study in Putrajaya

Nowadays, there are plentiful open parks operated for relaxation and entertainment in Malaysia. Putrajaya is one of the cities which have many public parks around. The aim of this study was to acquire the opinions of users regarding the needs of establishing "the Malaysian heritage garden concept" today. The main objective is to distinguish the factors that caused the implementation difficulties, and the initiatives that have been made to introduce this concept. Site observation and interview methods are used for collecting data. Respondents were selected using the simple random sampling technique among users of the public parks in Putrajaya and the experts of Malaysian Garden concept. The results revealed that the entire park design does not highlight the elements of the Malaysian Garden concept (the Malay Garden criteria's). From the information gathered can be presumed that Putrajaya is yet not prepared to highlight the traditional elements in landscape design. Although, Putrajaya is the federal administrative center of the country, but still not able to accentuate the national identity.
