Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health, 2008

Background The purpose of this study was to investigate level of loneliness, essential needs during university education, and relationships between loneliness, essential needs, and characteristics of university students. A sample comprising 721 students participated in the study. The mean age was 21.58 (SD=1.73) with a range from 18 to 25. The majority of the students were female (70.6%) and were living in students’ dormitory (67.5%) with low (87.8%) income, away from their parents. Methods The UCLA-R loneliness scale and sociodemographic questionnaire which includes an open-ended question on essential needs during university education were administered. Pearson-Product-Moment correlations were used to explore the relationships between participants’ loneliness, needs, and characteristics. Results It was found that 60.2% of the participants experienced loneliness. Economical support (81.6%), social interaction (46.9%) and psychosocial support (35%) were the essential needs during university education reported by the participants. The study findings indicate that there were significant relationships between the needs of economical support, social interaction, and loneliness level of university students. Results also show that there were significant relationships among romantic relationship, parents’ status and loneliness. Participants’ loneliness levels were relatively higher who had not any romantic relationship and were not from married families. Conclusions The findings of this study provided essential information, about Turkish university students, concerning: level of loneliness and relationships that exist among loneliness, needs and sociodemographic characteristics. The findings also suggest implications for psychosocial practice. Because of the mean of loneliness were found to be high (45.49±10.07), for this study, professionals need to pay attention to Turkish university students’ psychosocial state, and need to empower them in establishing social relations.

The research data was collected based on a survey of 30 participants with the help of questionnaire developed by UCLA Loneliness scale ( version 3) to describe the loneliness parameters of participants (Russell, 1978). H1:"There will be positive relationship between Male Loneliness and Academic Performance" H2: "There will be negative relationship between Female Loneliness and Academic Performance" Results supported both the Hypothesis because positive relation was found between this two variable based on male participants correlation coefficient (0.7151). and the negative relation was found between female loneliness effect on academic performance correlation coefficient (-0.648). Loneliness at Universities: Determinants of Emotional and Social Loneliness among Students

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2018

The transition from school to university is associated with social, structural, and behavioral changes. These changes may be related to feelings of loneliness, which are in turn related to morbidity. The authors’ aim was to quantify loneliness among students and to identify its determinants and its relation to transition-related variables (e.g., changes in weight, diet, or physical activity since the transition from high school to university). Coming from across Germany, 689 students participated in the Nutrition and Physical Activity in Adolescence (NuPhA) survey (16–29 years; 69.5% female). Associations of loneliness with the above-mentioned aspects were analyzed using descriptive statistics and linear regressions. Altogether, 32.4% felt moderately lonely and 3.2%, severely lonely. Emotional loneliness was more common than social loneliness (severe loneliness: 7.7% vs. 3.2%). Both were positively associated with feelings of depression and anxiety. Being married or in a committed r...

University students' loneliness and future time perspective as the predictors of their life satisfaction levels

The purpose of this study is to identify the role of loneliness and future time perspective as the predictors of life satisfaction levels of university students. The research was done with relational screening model. Data were obtained from 706 (386 women, 320 men) volunteer undergraduate university students. In order to collect data, " The Satisfaction with Life Scale " , " Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale " and " Future Time Perspective Scale " , are applied. Multiple regression technique is used to analyze the collected data. According to the result of the regression analysis levels it was discovered that the students' loneliness levels (social, romantic, and family subscales) are the predictors of their life satisfaction. However, it was concluded that the students' future time perspective (connectedness, value, speed and extension subscales) cannot predict their life satisfaction. Social interactions in the family setting, friend groups and romantic relationship would be a kind of social support for university students. Cross cultural studies would be useful to establish frameworks that can guide future research.

Relationship between loneliness and mental health in students

Journal of Public Mental Health, 2017

Purpose Previous cross-sectional research has examined the effect of loneliness on mental health. The purpose of this paper is to examine longitudinal relationships in students. Design/methodology/approach A total of 454 British undergraduate students completed measures of loneliness and mental health at four time points. Findings After controlling for demographics and baseline mental health, greater loneliness predicted greater anxiety, stress, depression and general mental health over time. There was no evidence that mental health problems increased loneliness over time. There was no relationship with alcohol problems. Baseline loneliness predicted greater eating disorder risk at follow-up and vice versa. Research limitations/implications This study is limited by a relatively small and heavily female sample. Practical implications Social and psychological interventions to reduce loneliness in university settings may improve mental health. Social implications Universities should co...

Loneliness among University Students as a Growing Concern

Journal of Family, Counseling and Education, 2023

In this article, we delve into a theoretical perspective on the prevalence of loneliness among university students. Despite previous research exploring various aspects of loneliness, there has been a general neglect in examining the effectiveness of various therapies specifically for university students. The paper begins by defining loneliness, exploring its types and causes, and highlighting its effects on university students. It then offers suggestions for alleviating loneliness through various strategies. A secondary objective is to emphasize the importance of universities providing support by organizing various social activities to unite students and encourage further research into effective methods of combating loneliness. The paper will review existing research to identify the causes of loneliness among university students, assess its impact on their lives, and suggest potential strategies to address it.
