Design and Analysis of a Fuzzy Model Based Solar Classroom Heater
2011
Fuzzy logic control was originally introduced and developed as a model free control design approach. However, it unfortunately suffers from criticism of lacking of systematic stability analysis controller design though it has a great success in industry applications. In the past two decade or so, prevailing research efforts on fuzzy logic control have been devoted to model-based fuzzy control systems. This paper presents a linguistic approach taking into account non-linearity especially in multivariable application systems. The main benefit is better and more accurate decision making due to the model-based approach and systematic knowledge management. Insight to the process dynamic operation is the most important issue. Automatic generation of systems, model-based techniques and adaptation techniques are very valuable in developing tuning systems for fault diagnosis and forecasting. The linguistic approach increases the performance by combining various specialized models in a case-b...
Fuzzy model representation of thermosyphon solar water heating system
Solar Energy, 2010
The aim of this paper is to focus on improvement in prediction accuracy of model for thermosyphon solar water heating (SWH) system. The work employs grey-box modeling approach based on fuzzy system to predict the outlet water temperature of the said system. The prediction performance results are compared with neural network technique, which has been suggested by various researchers in the last one decade. The outlet water temperature prediction by fuzzy modeling technique is analyzed by using 3 models, one with three inputs (inlet water temperature, ambient temperature, solar irradiance), next with two inputs (inlet water temperature, solar irradiance) and last one with single input (solar irradiance/inlet water temperature). An improved prediction performance is observed with three inputs fuzzy model.

In this study, the proponent makes use of the concepts of fuzzy logic in classifying the solar water heater as Very Hot, Hot, Lukewarm and Cold. The input parameters include cloudiness, amount of sunlight and seasonal differences. The parameters in the model are acquired through the use of sample raw data of the standard values and the relative levels from the weather forecast of Philippine Atmospheric and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). The goal of the study is to describe the fuzziness in solar water heater, design a fuzzy-based system and simulate and verify the effectiveness of the results. The proponent preferred to use the triangular membership functions and Sugeno-style of inference systems. The results obtained using Matlab Fuzzy Logic Toolbox was compared with the results obtained using Microsoft Excel. The comparison between these two methods for obtained solar water heat is tabulated. It was realized that there was a perfect correlation between the crisp ou...

Applying solar collectors is a popular tool to harness solar energy. In this research, a flat plate solar air collector with two types of glass cover, including slatted and flat, was investigated under direct solar radiation. The study was conducted to evaluate the capability of Perceptron Neural Network for modeling and predicting the efficiency of heat collectors by input parameters, input fluid mass flow, inlet and outlet air temperature from collector, temperature of the absorber, its thickness and porosity, and also solar energy. The tests were conducted in three replications on very clear sky days during 11 to 13 O′ clock (average solar energy was reported to be 1040 Wm-2 during the interval). Values obtained from tests were compared with the predicted values of the neural network. According to obtained coefficient of determination, for flat (0.98) and slatted (0.99) glass cover, it has been concluded that using ANN is an accurate method to predict the thermal performance of s...
Modeling and optimization of flat plate solar air collectors: An integrated fuzzy method
Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, 2019
The modeling and optimization of a flat plate solar air collector are investigated experimentally under the climatic conditions of Northeastern India using the integrated fuzzy method (IFM). The IFM consists of a combined subtractive clustering with a fuzzy (Takagi-Kang) method. The subtractive technique is used to find the most favorable IF-THEN rules while the fuzzy method is to optimize/predict the solar air collector parameters. Various governing parameters, such as the mass flow rate of air, collector tilt angle, solar radiation, and ambient temperature, are used as the input parameters while the thermal efficiency, exergetic efficiency, temperature rise, and pressure drop are the output parameters. First, experiments on solar air collectors are performed by varying the input parameters. Then, optimization, prediction, and parametric analyses are conducted. Finally, the proposed results are validated using confirmatory tests with the experimental data, published data, and artificially generated data. The accuracy of the obtained result for the solar air collector is found to be $97.5% and the best possible set of governing parameters are a mass flow rate of 0.00785 kg/s, tilt angle of 45 , solar radiation of 450 W/m 2 , and a temperature of 27 C. The corresponding outputs are the efficiency at 28.88% and the exergetic efficiency at 5.15%.

This study presents fuzzy control to improve solar heat absorbance efficiency (SHAE) of a forced circulation solar water heater (FCSWH) system, and simplify user settings. FCSWH system controls startup and stopping of circulating pump based on temperature difference between outlet and inlet of collector. Fuzzy control adapts to uncertainty of sunshine duration and modulates temperature difference to maximize SHAE. According to results, water temperature in heat storage cylinder increased by 3~5°C under fuzzy control system, showing a clear advantage in SHAE over manual control system.

Solar air heater (SAH) is an important device for solar energy utilization which is used for space heating, crop drying, timber seasoning etc. Its performance mainly depends on system parameters, operating parameters and meteorological parameters. Many researchers have been used these parameters to predict the performance of SAH by analytical or conventional approach and artificial neural network (ANN) technique, but performance prediction of SAH by using relevant input parameters has not been done so far. Therefore, relevant input parameters have been considered in this study. Total ten parameters were used such as mass flow rate, ambient temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, fluid inlet temperature, fluid mean temperature, plate temperature, wind direction, solar elevation and solar intensity to find out the relevant parameters for ANN prediction. Seven different neural models have been constructed using these parameters. In each model 10 to 20 neurons have been selected to find out the optimal model. The optimal neural models for

Appropriate working of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems is significant for well-organized thermal management, as well as operational costs. Furthermost of these structures use nonlinear time variances to handle instabilities, along with controllers that try to balance rise times and stability Heat pump is used to provide or absorb heat. The airconditioning systems now are usually used in the buildings. Temperature control is important for both human comfort and for smooth functioning in industries. So there are two categories for the different applications, one is for comfort living and the other one is for industrial application. The control items in the airconditioning include temperature, air quality and humidity in one room. The indoor environment is very important for the health and it can affect the efficiency of production. People usually spend a lot of time in the buildings, so the air conditioning system is designed to keep a comfortable environment for human beings. Many researchers have donated much time on the comfortable environment indoors and they find temperature and humidity are the major factors to human comfort. MATLAB software is used as the tool to make model and process calculations due to is simplicity to use and also because it has a dedicated toll box to run the testing and training of system. In the paper, intelligent control methods are proposed to achieve the optimum controlling of this heat pump. Such method are expected to reduce the cost of machine along with exponential rise in efficiency of system.
Control of the Heating System with Fuzzy Logic
The heating system is widely used because it can sustain wide range of temperature. So temperature control is of prime importance. The heating systems are used for controlled maintenance of indoor ambient characteristics in optimal manner. The objective of these systems is to achieve comfortable and pleasant sensation of people staying in the warm area. The heating control problem is tackled by a fuzzy control scheme. Fuzzy logic systems are employed to maintain the room temperature in required range by determines the maximum and minimum for temperature. One important Artificial Intelligence tool for automatic control is the use of fuzzy logic controllers, which are fuzzy rule-based systems comprising expert knowledge in form of linguistic rules. These rules are usually constructed by an expert in the field of interest who can link the facts with the conclusions. Fuzzy Logic is a paradigm for an alternative design methodology, which can be applied in developing both linear and non-linear systems for embedded control. By using fuzzy logic, designers can realize lower development costs, superior features and better end product performance. In control systems there are a number of generic systems and methods which are encountered in all areas of industry and technology. From the dozens of ways to control any system, it turns out that fuzzy is often the very best way. The only reasons are faster and cheaper. One of successful application that used fuzzy control is heating control system. This paper describes the concept of using simulation as a tool for performance validation and energy analysis of heating systems.
