Relationship between Physical Self-Concept and Health-Related Physical Fitness in Spanish Schoolchildren

Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2012

The main purpose of the present study was to analyze the relationship between physical self-concept and health-related physical fitness in Spanish children. A sample of 72 Spanish primary education students (boys, n=39; girls, n=33; aged 10-12) participated in the study. All students were evaluated in the same week during the Physical Education classes. Physical Self-Description Questionnaire and EUROFIT test battery were applied to measure the variables (physical self-concept and physical fitness, respectively). Pearson´s correlation analysis showed that physical self-concept and physical fitness are positively related (r=.55; p<.001). Physical self-concept and health-related physical fitness are positively associated in Spanish children.

Physical Self-Concept of Spanish Schoolchildren: Differences by Gender, Sport Practice and Levels of Sport Involvement

This study examined the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the C-PSQ, as well as the effect of gender, the practice of physical activity and sport and the extent of physical activity and sport practice outside of school hours in relation to the physical self-concept of older primary schoolchildren in Physical Education classes. The sample was comprised of 1086 participants, 570 boys and 516 girls ranging in age from 10 to 11 years. Each student completed Fox and Corbin's (1989) Physical Self-Perception Profile (PSPP) as it had been modified for the Spanish context by . The Spanish language version of the PSPP constituted a valid measure of the physical self-concept of these youth and was comprised of four factors. The construct validity of the measure was supported by findings that revealed that individuals who engaged in sport practice outside of school hours, and who engaged in a greater frequency of sport practice outside of school hours, had more favourable self-perceptions of competence and confidence in physical activities than did those engaged in less physical activity outside of school. Results in relation to gender indicated that boys had higher levels of perceived competence and greater self-confidence that did the girls in relation to sport activities, whereas the girls had a more favourable perception of their physical appearance and physical strength than did boys. These differences may reflect underlying growth and developmental influences for boys and girls in this age range.

Muscular Strength of Upper and Lower Limbs and Self-Esteem in Chilean SchoolChildren: Independent Associations with Body Composition Indicators

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2021

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between muscular strength from upper and lower limbs with self-esteem among Chilean schoolchildren, drawing independent associations with body composition indicators. The sample consisted of 1078 schoolchildren. The muscular strength of the upper and lower limbs was evaluated using a digital dynamometer and long jump performance. The general strength index was calculated based on Z-score values. Rosenberg’s test was used to determine the level of self-esteem of participants. Body fat and body mass index were employed as body composition indicators. Boys had significantly more upper and lower strength, and a general strength index higher than girls (11.7 vs. 10.6; 109.7 vs. 97.4; 0.19 vs. −0.24, respectively). For boys and girls combined, there were no significant associations between all muscular strength variables and self-esteem. In boys, upper and lower limb strength was positively associated with self-esteem. In girls, no ass...

Physical Fitness Level and Its Relationship with Self-Concept in School Children

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between general self-concept and health-related physical fitness in primary school children. Design: Cross-sectional design and descriptive court. Method: A total of 216 schoolchildren (9.26 ± 1.26 years) participated in the measurement of the speed-agility, muscle strength and aerobic capacity as physical fitness components. Six dimensions of self-concept (intellectual, behavioral, physical, lack of anxiety, social and life satisfaction) were assessed by the Self-Concept Scale Piers-Harris. Results: No significant differences were found among the self-concept dimensions between men and women. Males showed higher scores on the test of 4 × 10 m (p < 0.05), manual dynamometry (p < 0.005) and Course-Navette (p < 0.005). An increased fitness level was positively and significantly related with higher values of overall self-concept (p < 0.005) in both genres. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that those students with a higher overall fitness level show higher levels of general self-concept. More investigation is needed to know which physical fitness parameters are more related with the self-concept.

Relationships between Physical Self-Concept and Physical Fitness in Italian Adolescents

Perceptual and Motor Skills, 2010

Physical self-concept exerts a central role in adolescence. In this phase of life, individuals experience many physical, mental, and emotional changes, and sex differences become evident. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between physical self-concept and actual indicators of physical fitness among youth in early adolescence. A total of 103 Italian boys and girls, ages 12 to 15 years ( M = 13.2, SD = 0.7) were studied. Physical self-concept was assessed using the Physical Self-Description Questionnaire, EUROFIT tests were used to measure physical fitness, and BMI was calculated based on height and weight measurements. Results showed several significant correlations between the variables, revealed some sex differences on physical self-concept and fitness, and indicated significant correlations between EUROFIT scores and physical self-concept variables.

Exercise Influence on Self-Concept, Self-Esteem and Academic Performance in Middle-School Children

Revista Romaneasca pentru Educatie Multidimensionala

Studies have highlighted the benefits of regular practice of exercise and a positive contribution in the development of cognitive function. Psychological benefits of exercise have been noticed in the academic performance increasing, the self-trust, the emotional stability, the memory and positive body image and well-being. This study had as main objective to analyse the impact of physical exercise in academic performance of middle-school students of a Portuguese public school. The number of participants consisted of a total of 107 students. Of these 107 students, 55 (51.4%) were males and 52 (48.6%) were female, aged between 10 and 12 years and mean ages =11.19 ± 0.81. A total of 41 children (38.3%) from the fifth grade and 66 children (61.7%) from the sixth grade were randomly selected. For data collection instrument, the scale of Self-concept of Susan Harter validated for the Portuguese population was used, where it was proceeded to a descriptive and inferential statistics data an...

Physical self-concept in primary education. A proposal for a measurement tool

European Journal of Human Movement, 2016

This research has two main goals: (a) setting up a valid and reliable tool under the form of a questionnaire to measure physical self-concept; and (b) checking the factor structure of that questionnaire "Physical Self on Primary Students" (PSPS) through a factor analysis. Accordingly, we drew up a tool consisting of 20 items that was delivered to 330 students during an initial pilot stage, and to 692 students during a second stage, all of them being 5th and 6th primary grade students. The results reveal the existence of a four dimensional mode, since the indexes found in the confirmatory factorial analysis show a reasonably suitable adjustment of the model. Thus, the GFI index provides values of .827 and .773 for the AGFI. At the same time, the c2 provides a value of 1043.64 (P = .000) with 104 degrees of freedom. The value of the IFC is .862, close to the subjective cutoff point to consider it a model of fair representation of the observed data. PSP-PS showed as a valid and reliable tool, easy to apply to primary students. It could contribute to detect, prevent and/or intervene in students with low self-esteem.

Factorial invariance of the Physical Self-Concept Scale in Mexican students (Invarianza factorial de la escala de autoconcepto físico en hombres y mujeres estudiantes universitarios)

Retos

The present study analyses the psychometric properties proposed by Blanco, Blanco, Viciana, and Zueck (2015) for the Physical Self-Concept Scale (CAF). The total sample consisted of 1,500 Mexican university students, with a mean age of 20.69 years (± SD = 2.33). Confirmatory factorial analyses showed that a two-factor structure is viable and adequate for both studied groups (men and women). The structure of two factors (motor competence and physical attractiveness), according to statistical and substantive criteria, has shown adequate indicators of reliability and validity adjustment. In addition, the factorial structure, factor loads and intercepts are considered invariant in the two groups studied. However, differences between the two groups for the factor means were found. Further research should replicate these findings in larger samples.

The influence of exercise on adolescents self-concept

International Journal of Sport Psychology, 2016

The present research sheds light on the importance of physical activity with regards to self-concept in Spanish adolescents and considers physical exercise, family and academic variables. An explanatory and relational study was conducted. A total of 2,134 teenagers aged between 15 and 18 years old participated in the study. A descriptive and relational analysis by means of the ANOVA Test was also undertaken. The results obtained are discussed here taking into account the relevant specialised literature. It was found that two thirds of the students sampled did exercise regularly, team sports being the most popular. These learners presented a high degree of self-concept, particularly for the social and family dimensions. It can also be concluded from this study that better physical condition and appearance are related to sport engagement, and that physical activity is related to improved self image and to fostering social and family relationships.

The relationship between actual and self-perceived physical fitness in adolescence

Kinesiology, 2021

The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between physical self-concept and actual indicators of physical fitness in early and mid-adolescence. Physical self-concept plays a significant role in adolescence, as this phase of life is characterised by many physical, mental, and emotional changes. A total of 427 Slovenian boys and girls from two age groups (early and middle adolescence) were studied. Physical self-concept was assessed with the Slovenian version of Physical Self-Description Questionnaire, while the Sports-educational Chart was used to measure physical fitness. The results showed that the older group scored better on all measures of physical fitness, except for general endurance. In terms of age-related differences in physical self-concept, older adolescents showed poorer physical perceptions of their strength and flexibility and higher global self-esteem compared to their younger peers. Correlation analysis showed that physical self-concept and actual indi...
