Onteniente B, Geffard M, Campistron G, Calas A. An ultrastructural study of GABA-immunoreactive neurons and terminals in the septum of the rat. J Neurosci 7: 48-54 (original) (raw)
An ultrastructural analysis was conducted to investigate GABA-immunoreactive neurons and terminals within the septal nuclei of the rat, utilizing electron microscopy with anti-GABA antibodies. The findings indicated that GABA-immunoreactivity is predominantly located in neuronal somata, dendrites, axonal varicosities, and myelinated axons, with distinct distributions between medial and lateral septal nuclei. Notably, GABA-immunoreactive terminals were characterized by symmetrical synaptic contacts and varied in synaptic structures, suggesting a complex interplay among GABAergic elements in these regions.
