DIGITAL PRESERVATION IN LIBRARY (original) (raw)

Digital Preservation, Issues and Their Strategies for Libraries: A Modern Era

We are living in the digital world. In this digital library environment, the traditional library system and services are being replaced by new techniques such as library automation, collection development of eresources and networking of libraries. There has been tremendous change in the digital information world. Everyone has to adopt these changes such as printed to digital form. The preservation of digital records in order to identify factors that play a key role in ensuring the long term preservation of the records for better access the information. A digital preservation system is a set of procedures, activities and instruments that help to safeguard digital memory over time. This means to preserve all the documents, both borndigital and converted to digital, in the long term, preserving their content. This paper provides an overview of the major digital preservation activities, definition, concept, process and types of media for preservation. This paper also presents the principles, issues and their strategies for digital preservation. It has also highlights the digital preservation standards and framework fo preservation planning and management.

JOALS DIGITAL PRESERVATION IN LIBRARIES

Preservation of conventional resources became more flourishing and organized when the libraries and archives started incorporating preservation into their overall planning and resource allocation. Digital preservation is fundamentally experimental as well as full of risks linked with untested Digital preservation strategies. Archives hold millions of documents like manuscripts, rare books, paintings, photographs, and historical records, which represent human heritage. With the passage of time, paper manuscripts start getting fragile and brittle because of various reasons including environmental and climate changes. Lamination does not seem to be a permanent solution of preservation of this cultural heritage for future generations. Digitization technology has a lot of benefits associated with it for the effective preservation and future access of this heritage. A document becomes perpetual and can be accessed for long after it proper digitization irrespective of the existence of the original document. Another benefit of providing access of a document in digital format is that it results in considerable reduction in physical handling of the original hard copy of the document. Digital Preservation is a set of various organized procedures and activities, which are required to be carried out for the purpose of ensuring everlasting availability of the material in digital format for its usage. It is a challenging task because of being a complex process. The present paper deals with the basic concept of Digital Preservation, its need, relevance, objectives, and strategies. It also discusses about the overview of technological approaches and strategies to digital preservation and its benefits and challenges in the libraries.

Digital Preservation in Academics Libraries

International Journal of Library and Information Studies, 2020

In the age of information technology everything merged with the new technologies. In the field of preservation technology made a huge change and gives a new dimension to it. Digital preservation helps us to store and keep our information resources safe and secure for future purpose. In the academic library digital preservation plays important roles which make secure and give longevity to the information resources.

Digital Preservation

Design, Development, and Management of Resources for Digital Library Services

The most important component of a digital library is the digital collection as it holds or has access to viability and extent of usefulness of mustering up the collection of the digital objects and it may include the wide range of the resources i.e. the collections include books, journals, newspapers, maps, printed music, pictures, manuscripts and oral history recordings. This information content may includes the combination of Structured /Unstructured text, numerical data, Scanned images, graphics, audio and video recordings. Thus, the different types of resources need to be mustered differently and the policies must be made accordingly.

Preservation and Conservation of Library Materials in the Digital Age

2017

The paper attempts to explain preservation and conservation as measures for achieving sustainability of library materials as long as possible in their original format. In order to achieve this, causes of deterioration of library materials such as poor paper manufacture, improper storage, rough handling, pests and knowledge of disaster occurrence, electronic means of preservation, challenges and strategies for digital materials preservation have been examined.

Digital Preservation Methods and Technology In Digital Era

Libraries are storehouse of large number of documentary sources such as records, manuscripts, books, films and other materials. Since these materials with the passage of time are subject to deterioration and decay. Hence all these materials need to be preserved using different mechanisms so that these materials are available to the future generations also. Due to huge advances in information communication technologies (ICTs), there has been an astronomical growth of e-resources -journals, e books, online databases and so on; libraries spend phenomenally on acquisition of these e- resources as these are very popularly used by the students and researchers. Unfortunately, this growth is accompanied by many threats. Digital content (of the e- resources) is fragile and not durable. Its accessibility and use by future generations depends on technology which very rapidly evolves and changes. Hence, ensuring access of e-resources for future generation of users is a big challenge for libraries. This paper discussed the Methods and Technology of digital preservation analysis the various types of preservation in traditional documents as well as preservation of digitized forms of documents using latest technologies.

Digital preservation: a time bomb for digital libraries

Computers and the Humanities, 1997

The difficulty and expense of preserving digital information is a potential impediment to digital library development. Preservation of traditional materials became more successful and systematic after libraries and archives integrated preservation into overall planning and resource allocation. Digital preservation is largely experimental and replete with the risks associated with untested methods. Digital preservation strategies are shaped by the needs and constraints of repositories with little consideration for the requirements of current and future users of digital scholarly resources. This article discusses the present state of digital preservation, articulates requirements of both users and custodians, and suggests research needs in storage media, migration, conversion, and overall management strategies. Additional research in these areas would help developers of digital libraries and other institutions with preservation responsibilities to integrate long-term preservation into program planning, administration, system architectures, and resource allocation.
