Manegenkünste [Conference, 2016] (original) (raw)
With monumental productions, huge menageries and sensational freak shows, circuses of the 19th and early 20th centuries were travelling around the world and were one – if not the – major cultural institution. Circus and its many reinterpretations had, and still have, an immense impact on culture, the arts, literature and many other fields. Surprisingly however, the cultural potential of the Arts of the Ring has remained largely unexplored. The conference “Manegenkünste. Zirkus als ästhetisches Modell” ("Arts of the Ring. Circus as Aesthetic Model") will change that. With 26 talks by eminent international scholars from the Humanities, Science, Social Studies, Circus and Animal Studies, Artistic Research and other relevant research areas, accompanied by talks by performers, a presentation by the Circus Archives of Berlin and Marburg, and an exceptional photo exhibition, this conference will explore the interdisciplinary power of circus as a fascinating field of research and discussion. +++ Conference “Manegenkünste.
