Characterization of the Effects of an rpoC Mutation That Confers Resistance to the Fst Peptide Toxin-Antitoxin System Toxin (original) (raw)
Overexpression of the Fst toxin in Enterococcus faecalis strains leads to adverse effects on cell division and integrity. The M7 mutant, which has a mutation in the rpoC gene, demonstrates resistance to these effects. Mutagenesis studies confirmed that the rpoC mutation is responsible for the resistance phenotype, as it prevents the induction of stress-related transporters triggered by the Fst toxin. This reveals a critical relationship between toxin expression and cellular responses that could inform the understanding of toxin-antitoxin systems in bacteria.
