Networks without Technologies in Industrial Districts of Northeast Italy
2001
The fact that new information and communication technologies are revolutionizing the economic system and the way firms organize their business is well known (Kelly 1998; Tapscott, Lowy, Ticoll 1998). What is perhaps less clear are the advantages that can be exploited by SMEs of industrial districts in order to enhance their competitive position.
From local networks of SMEs to virtual districts
Research Policy, 2004
Industrial districts as local networks of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) rooted their competitiveness in a mix of economic relationships and social ties. Recently, network technologies have promised gains of efficiency through a reduction in transaction costs and showed new commercial opportunities for small firms. Despite the morphological similarities between industrial districts and network technologies, a longitudinal analysis of ICT diffusion within Italian districts shows that the foreseen convergence between the district economic model and new technologies should not be taken for granted. The observed specific evolutionary paths concerning technology innovation in local systems also opens-up issues of economic policy.
Networks and new communication technologies in industrial districts of northeast Italy
2011
Abstract The paper discusses the evolution of Italian local production systems as well as solutions and models of the diffusion of information and communication technologies in them. The article is based on an in-depth empirical analysis of a number of industrial districts in the northern-east Italy. The goal is twofold: on the one side, to study the diffusion of technological innovation among SMEs; on the other side, to consider policies that can support the diffusion of ICTs in local economic systems.
Consistent with the Europe 2020 strategy, the next CAP will contribute in the promotion of innovative models for agricultural and rural development. The RD legal framework underlines the need to support social innovation and bolster co-operation in rural areas. The aim of the paper is to investigate which practices could be adopted to nourish networking processes. The focus is on how effective training intervention is in reinforcing network awareness and capabilities among rural actors. In 2011 a Mountain Community carried out a project seeking to bolster the creation of a firm network. It involved a group of local firms in a training programme and focused on relational training in order to improve communication, firm interaction and group management. The research results and the project outcomes reinforce the con-cept that sustainable rural development policies should also underpin relational skills, in order to increase the chances that the network functions in the long term. Limitations faced by southern Italy’s small enterprises due to their dimensions may be overcome by cooperation strategies and network contracts. The international literature has highlighted that effectively governed business networks appear to more successfully allow partner firms to improve their economic performance and survive over time. This paper combines qualitative and quantitative analyses to test the above hypothesis. It also analyses the performance of southern Italian firms that have joined business network contracts equipped with legal personality — the so called “reti soggetto” or “heavy contractual networks” (HCNs) — compared to firms participating in business networks based only on contractual agreements, devoid of legal personality—the so called “reti contratto” or “light contractual networks” (LCNs). Our findings demonstrate that only 13% of all registered business networks are in fact operative. Among the networks with legal personality, approximately 28% are activ...
Competitive Networking For SME: A Case Study Of Its Success In Italy
Small and Medium Enterprises have limited financial resources, which hampers development possibilities. For small and medium entities, the ambition toward a foreign-market driven income is on the increase. However, going international seems to be harder because of its peculiar financial restraint. This paper intends to give evidence to an empirical case of excellence, which is emerging as a prototype in the agri-food industry since its establishment: the Agribusiness Cluster Brixia (hereafter, ACB). The Agribusiness Cluster Brixia is a well-defined group of companies highly specialized in technology, the Cluster shares. This company integrates skills at every stage of the supply chain, from farm production to food distribution, storing, and processing. The aim of this paper is to test if it has really provided advantages for the partners, and how. These advantages can be in reducing some competitive costs for the partners involved, entering new markets, or by developing new and cooperative solutions to the customers needs.
