The Contribution of Knowledge Exchange to Supplier's Operational Performance (original) (raw)

Effect of Knowledge Sharing and Supply Chain Management on Organizational Performance

Low priced and attainable information technology has made it possible to connect critical and proprietary information with supply chain partners, because of ever growing size, complexity, 7/24 system ability, evolved production processes etc. need flow of knowledge continuously. The knowledge integrated in the supply chain management (SCM) systems affects both supply chain and organizational performance. But since there is no single entity on performance an effective systematically approach to performance measurement could not be established. Generally in previous studies, organizational performance hasn`t been measured within the terms of SCM but if integral unit endeavor performance can be judged by so the overall performance can be judged by its departments` efforts. So SCOR model is chosen because important supply chain characteristics and their associated interactions aren’t ignored. And organizational performance is reciprocal that performance measurement is taken a system for integrating the management of supply chain and knowledge. Therefore the objectives of the study were appeared to be correlation levels and relationships between knowledge shar- ing, SCM and organizational performance. This study is unique in terms of the dimensions that are being investigated in Turkey. While there are studies on SCM and knowledge sharing, each examined alone, this study tried to undercover the relationships between these two terms.

Supplier development Improving supplier performance through knowledge transfer 2007 Journal of Operations Management

The dynamic business environment today requires organizations to effectively use all available resources to remain competitive. The quality and cost of a product or service offered in the market is a function, not only of the capabilities of the firm, but also the supplier network providing inputs to the enterprise. To remain competitive, organizations are increasingly implementing supplier development programs to maintain capable and high performance supply bases. This paper presents a conceptual model of an organization's efforts to improve supplier performance. Then latent variable structural equation modeling (LVSEM) is used to test the model with data for 215 supplier development experiences from US manufacturing firms. The results suggest that evaluation and certification efforts are the most important supplier development prerequisites before undertaking operational knowledge transfer activities such as site visits and supplier training. Furthermore, collaborative inter-organizational communication is identified as important supporting factor in transforming an organization's efforts to develop suppliers into supplier performance improvements. #

Effectiveness and Efficiency of Knowledge Transfer in Supplier Development: Key Antecedents and Buyer-Supplier Outcomes

2011

There is strong evidence that U.S. organizations are increasingly implementing supplier development programs to help their suppliers improve quality, enhance delivery performance, reduce costs, and in turn improve their own supply chain performance. However, many of these supplier development programs are not successful. This study argues that an understanding of the knowledge transfer process should play a central role in understanding improvements in buyer-supplier performance resulting from supplier development activities. Building on the extant supplier development literature and relevant knowledge transfer literature, this study investigates key antecedents and performance outcomes of knowledge transfer in a supplier development context. Specifically, the study tests the impact of the extent of supplier development involvement, trust (competence and benevolent), shared vision and supplier‘s learning intent on the effectiveness (comprehension and usefulness) and efficiency (spee...

Supplier-Focused Knowledge Management in the Automobile Industry and Its Implications for Product Performance

Journal of Management Studies, 2007

This study focuses on the impact of knowledge management in supplier relations (termed as supplier-focused knowledge management, SFKM) within the automobile industry of an emerging economy (Brazil), on financial and product performance. A model of the relationship between supplier-focused knowledge management, including its associated processes, and performance is described and the associated hypotheses are developed and then tested. Knowledge sharing through face-to-face communication is positively related to both product and financial performance, while technological knowledge sharing has a positive impact on product performance under conditions of high technological dynamism. Supplier involvement in the production process is related to product performance and use of knowledge management tools is related to financial performance. The results support the major hypotheses of our SFKM model. These results are discussed in the context of the knowledge management and supplier-relations literatures in terms of the contributions, implications for research and practice, and directions for future research.

Inter-organizational Knowledge Transfer in the Buyer-Supplier Relationship: A Buyer's Perspective

2007 40th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS'07), 2007

We delineate an integrative view of interorganizational knowledge transfer (IOKT) in the upstream supply chain relationship from a buyer's perspective. For this purpose, we suggest that the concept of IOKT can be classified into the source and the recipient type of knowledge transfer according to the direction of knowledge flow. A three-stage model (motivation-behaviors-performance) is adopted to examine the relationships between IOKT and its antecedent factors, and, in turn, between IOKT and organizational performance. By analyzing 140 buyersupplier relationships using the partial least squares (PLS) method, we verify our research hypotheses. The results show that each of these two sub-concepts of knowledge transfer has different motivational and resultant mechanism. In addition, we also consider information sharing as another key construct of IOKTrelated behavior, examining its relationship with motivational and resultant factors. Contributions of this research and future research opportunities are also discussed.

Supply Chain Integration and Supply Chain Performance: The Role of Knowledge Sharing as a Mediator

The International Journal of Management, 2020

The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating role of knowledge sharing in the relationship between supply chain integration and supply chain performance. This study used a survey questionnaire for a sample size of 277 managers from various sectors in the manufacturing industry in Jordan. This study utilised PLS Structural Equation Modeling for testing the hypothesis. The finding indicates a significant positive relationship between supply chain integration and supply chain performance and that knowledge sharing plays partial mediation in this relationship. This study provides an important implication on the role of knowledge sharing. The performance of the supply chain can be maximised if the supply chain partners share knowledge among them. This will expedite the process of delivering the products to the customers. Awareness among partners on the importance to share and utilise knowledge better should be raised. The study contributes to the research on supply chain managem...

The effect of relational capital on performance: knowledge sharing as mediation variables in supplier and buyer relation

International Journal of Logistics Systems and Management,, 2019

Interactions that occur in cooperation within supplier and buyer relationships create good relationships manifested by mutual trust and respect, and good friendships between suppliers and buyers. Relationships based on good intentions and manifested through a number of attributes are known as relational capital. Relationships built on trust, to the cause of friendship between suppliers and buyers mutual respect and reciprocity are what makes the buyer willing to share knowledge with the supplier. Given this shared knowledge, suppliers can help improve buyer performance. Thus, this study aims to examine the effect of relational capital on performance through knowledge sharing into mediation variables. This research uses a quantitative approach to test several hypotheses through partial least square (PLS) analysis, and examines a sample of 48 buyers within the cement industry. The results of this study indicate that relational capital positively and significantly influences knowledge sharing, which then positively and significantly affects the buyer's performance. However, relational capital has no significant effect on buyer performance. Knowledge sharing mediates in full relational capital relationships to buyer performance. Knowledge Exchange in a Supply Chain Context

2004

The virtual alliance between supply chain actors enables to create new links to better share information and knowledge. There are already some methods and approaches specifically designed to share and exchange this knowledge in local areas of the supply chain. In this paper, we are interested in treating this issue in a global perspective and focuses also on the classification of the knowledge according to some criteria as knowledge structure, knowledge type, knowledge nature, etc. The dynamic of the knowledge is introduced within an organizational learning perspective between the supply chain actors.
