Indonesian Islamic Commercial Banks’ Efficiency: A Stochastic Frontier Analysis
Shirkah: Journal of Economics and Business, 2020
Islamic banks in Indonesia are continuously experiencing a rapid growth; thus, it results in a competitive financial sector. Consequently, maintaining an excellent performance is a prerequisite to gain customers’ trust and loyalty, one of the ways is enhancing productivity and efficiency performance. Drawing on this issue, the present study aims to examine the efficiency of Islamic banks listed in the Financial Services Authority (OJK) in the period of 2015 to 2019. Employing Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) as a parametric approach, this study measured the efficiency level of cost and profit efficiency of the Indonesian Islamic commercial banks. The data were a cross-section and panel data obtained from financial reports established by seven Indonesian Islamic commercial banks. The result of frontier analysis on the efficiency costs showed that the value of sharia banks’ average efficiency in Indonesia was approximately 93.41%, while the efficiency of profit resulted in 55.35%. EFFICIENCY OF ISLAMIC BANKING IN MALAYSIA: A STOCHASTIC FRONTIER APPROACH
This study empirically investigates the efficiency of the full-fledged Islamic banks, Islamic windows and conventional banks in Malaysia. It finds that the Malaysian Islamic banking industry has, in terms of assets, deposits and financing base, grown very rapidly over the 1997-2003 period. The study then measures the technical and cost efficiency of these banks using the Stochastic Frontier Approach. The findings show that, on average, the efficiency of the overall Islamic banking industry has increased during the period of study while that of conventional banks remained stable over time. However, the efficiency level of Islamic banking is still lower than that of conventional banks. The study also reveals that full-fledged Islamic banks are more efficient than Islamic windows, while Islamic windows of foreign banks tend to be more efficient than those of domestic banks.
Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) countries: comprising of 37 conventional banks and 43 Islamic banks, using the Stochastic Frontier Approach (SFA). In addition, it assesses the efficiency of those banks based on their size, age, and region. The findings suggest that there are no significant differences between the overall efficiency results of conventional versus Islamic banks. However, there is substantial room for improvement in cost minimisation and profit maximisation in both banking systems. Furthermore, the findings show no significance difference in average efficiency scores between big versus small and new versus old banks in both banking streams. This implies that size and age did not affect the performance of banks in both streams. Overall, the results are in favour of the more recent Islamic banking system. JEL Classification: G21, C14

Increased efficiency occurs when the output or output level is in production at a lower cost. The Assessment of Islamic Bank's financial performance can be known through financial statements. Also, the Ratio of BOPO and NPL (NPF) is higher. In measuring the efficiency of banks, often using BOPO ratios. Measurement of this research was carried out in two research stages (First Stage and Second Stage). In the size of the Bank into three determining factors that affect the efficiency of banking profit (1) Bank Size Ratio (asset log); (2) CAR Ratio; (3) NPF Ratio; (4) ETA ratio. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the level of cost efficiency by using measurement methods (SFA) at Sharia Commercial Banks in Indonesia; and to test the significance of the effect of Bank Size, Capital, Credit Quality, and Asset Structure simultaneously and partially on the Level of Cost Efficiency in Sharia Commercial Banks in Indonesia. Types of casal research. Sampling techniques carried out a...
Banks and Bank Systems
There are two sectors of banks operating in Indonesia, namely Sharia banks and conventional banks. Improving performance is important in maintaining public confidence in the bank. Efficiency is one of the parameters to measure the performance of Sharia banks. This study measures the comparative level of technical efficiency of Sharia commercial banks and conventional banks by Stochastic Frontier Analysis method during 2011–2015 period by using 10 samples of Sharia commercial banks and conventional banks. Input variables in this study are total deposits, operational costs, and other operational costs. Total financing is an output variable. The results of this study show that total deposits and operational costs have a positive and significant impact on total financing in Sharia and conventional banks. The average score of the technical efficiency of Sharia commercial banks during the period observed is 0.84 and conventional banks is 0.85.
Banking Efficiency: A Comparative Study Between Islamic and Conventional Banks in GCC Countries
Copernican Journal of Finance & Accounting
This research aims at comparing the efficiency of Islamic and conventional banks operating in the GCC countries from 2006 to 2015 for a sample of 51 conventional and 48 Islamic banks using stochastic frontier analysis and the CIR ratio. The results show that Islamic banks are less efficient in terms of cost than conventional banks, and that this result remains valid even during the 2008 crisis period and even after controlling for bank-specific variables. Regarding the determinants of bank efficiency, empirical results show that capital adequacy and size positively affect bank efficiency as measured by the stochastic frontier analysis. Results also indicate that productive assets are negatively related to efficiency as measured by the CIR ratio. This study provides new insights in terms of financial efficiency of the banking system. Findings could help Islamic and conventional banks to increase their efficiency and their performance and improve the service provided to customers.
Measuring Efficiency of the Indonesian Islamic Banks
Kajian Ekonomi dan Keuangan
In recent years, the number of Islamic Commercial Bank and Business Unit increases significantly. Nevertheless, net profit of these banks decreased significantly in 2014. On the other hand, the Islamic Rural Banks which have slower growth of bank networks are able to manage insignificant profit reduction. Therefore, this study aims to estimate the level of inefficiency for both the Islamic Commercial banks and Islamic Rural Banks. Moreover, this study also estimates the determinants of inefficiency at the Islamic banks. There are two main contributions of this study: this study differentiates the Islamic banks into two categories and identifies causes of inefficiency. The methodology which is utilised in this study is the Stochastic Frontier Analysis based on monthly data in period 2009-2014. There are several main findings of this study. Firstly, the depositor's fund has an important role in determining the ability of financing for both types of bank. Secondly, regarding of ine...
Profit efficiency development of Islamic Banking using the stochastic frontier approach
Jurnal Ekonomi & Keuangan Islam
This study aims to analyze the efficiency of Islamic banking with a stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) on 10 Islamic banks from 2011 to 2018. The research variables consist of input variables total profits, third party funds and personnel expenses and output variable total financing and murabahah receivables. This research method uses SFA to measure the efficiency of Islamic banks and the influence between variables. The results of this study indicate the average efficiency of Islamic banks has not reached 100% or at 82.24%. Variable third party funds, personnel expenses have a positive effect on total profits while total financing and murabahah receivables have a negative effect on total profits.
A Cobb Douglas Stochastic Frontier Model on Measuring Domestic Bank Efficiency in Malaysia
PloS one, 2012
Banking system plays an important role in the economic development of any country. Domestic banks, which are the main components of the banking system, have to be efficient; otherwise, they may create obstacle in the process of development in any economy. This study examines the technical efficiency of the Malaysian domestic banks listed in the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE) market over the period 2005-2010. A parametric approach, Stochastic Frontier Approach (SFA), is used in this analysis. The findings show that Malaysian domestic banks have exhibited an average overall efficiency of 94 percent, implying that sample banks have wasted an average of 6 percent of their inputs. Among the banks, RHBCAP is found to be highly efficient with a score of 0.986 and PBBANK is noted to have the lowest efficiency with a score of 0.918. The results also show that the level of efficiency has increased during the period of study, and that the technical efficiency effect has fluctuated considerably over time.
